John Green does in fact have a presence in the lives of many vulnerable young teenage girls and have immediate access to them via social media. Saying so does not mean that people are accusing him of being a fucking pedophile and that’s not at all what the person who made that post did.

It’s obvious that growing up that he was probably one of those kid who thought that he was above his peers because he enjoyed listening to the Beatles instead of listening to Britney Spears and preferred to stay home watching 60 minutes instead of going out and partying. And the girl he liked was probably considered not within his social reach because she was a cheerleader and dating the football team captain, but he may have projected this fantasy onto her where she was secretly suffering being popular and needed someone to rescue her so to speak.

Now he’s trying to reconcile the isolation he felt during his childhood by cultivating this fan base of young people, especially young girls who may fit into the profile of key people from his teen years in an attempt to live vicariously through them.

Just look at the way he writes principle female characters. They usually are the embodiment of the Manic Pixie Dream Girl trope. I’ve only read The Fault in Our Stars and part of Looking for Alaska, but characters like Hazel Grace and Alaska are often depicted as being elusive, or loners, attractive but not being aware of it, and vulnerable. Even looking at the trailer of Paper Towns and assuming it stayed true to the book, you can say all the same things about Cara Delevingne’s character that I listed above.

There are power dynamics between Green and his fan base that needs to be addressed and looked at critically. Even if he isn’t a physical threat to them, he needs to be aware that he still has an emotional and mental pull over his impressionable fan base.
