サウスカロライナ州チャールストンにあるアフリカ系アメリカ人が通うエマニュエル・アフリカン・メソジスト・エピスコパル教会で銃が乱射され、男女9人が死亡した事件で6月19日、ディラン・ルーフ容疑者(21)への初めての保釈審問がチャールストン拘置所が開かれた。
ルーフ容疑者はストライプの囚人服を着て、後方の両側に2人の警官が監視するなか、別室でモニターカメラ越しで審問に臨んだ。モニター画面で見ると、ルーフ容疑者は保釈審問の間、表情を変えなかった。犠牲者の代表は法廷にいて、容疑者の様子を見ることができ、ルーフ容疑者は法廷のすべての言葉を聞くことができた。

同じく犠牲者となったティワンザ・サンダースさん(26)の母フェリシアさんは次のように語った。
「水曜夜に行われる聖書の勉強会に、両手を広げてお迎えします。あなたは、私が知る中でも最も美しい人たちの命を奪いました。私の身体中の細胞が傷つき、痛みます。私が元のように戻ることはないでしょう。ティワンザは私の息子であり、ヒーローでした」
死亡したダニエル・シモンズさん(74)の孫アラナ・シモンズさんもルーフ容疑者に語りかけた。
「憎しみが勝つことはありません」とアラナさんは語った。「私の祖父、そしてその他の犠牲になられた方々は憎しみのせいで命を失いました。みんながあなたの魂のために嘆願すること、それによって彼らは愛の中で生き、彼らの遺したものが愛の中で生きる証となるのです。憎しみが勝つことがないように、裁判所のみなさんにお願いしたい」
裁判官はルーフ容疑者に、告訴内容についての確認を行い、次回の審問は10月23日と2016年2月5日に行うことを告げた。
ルーフ容疑者はカメラに向かって「はい、ありがとうございます」と答えた。
