Damn! Straight boys...

This comment should prolly be higher up. I was pretty confused at first...

Haha, the lack of punctuation was supposed to add comedic effect, I don't know if it did or not.

Thought tumblr would be more of: damn, straight boys.

please, they'd never consider something white important

Oh cool, the french flag.

The French don't deserve this, especially in this subreddit. The French have had our back since day one

True story, the French are basically our bros for life.

There's a huge difference between attacking and teasing.

I'm offensive and I find this French...

Oh holy shit these comments...

Why can't we just agree that the Civil War years were a dark point in American history, as was the institution that led to its inevitability? That this dark chapter, while important to remember, should not be celebrated in any way? That the symbols representing America's traitors should be looked upon with scorn and regret?

The Confederate States existed purely to continue the ruthless exploitation of a subjugated race, and its political leaders weren't afraid to admit this. If you fly their flag and call it pride, I call you un-American. You're flying the flag of a political opposition that led to more American deaths than Hitler. You're flying the flag of oppression. You're flying the flag of ignorance. We have room for only one flag in the USA, and that's the fuckin' Stars and Stripes. Old Glory.

There's no pride to be had in flying the flag of a defeated state of bigots and traitors, only goddamn filthy fuckin' Commies think otherwise.

B-but, muh states rights™!

I am South Carolinian. I am a member of the historical society, "Sons of the Confederacy." I appreciate our rich history.

But I despise the Stars and Bars flying in front of our state house. I despise the Un-American values that the CSA stood for.

You can appreciate history, but you can't support such awful and immoral values. I am a South Carolinian, but I am an American above all other things.

I see nothing wrong with appreciating the history of something. From a military standpoint the south had a few of the greatest military minds of the time leading them for no other reason than loyalty to their brethren

I despise the Un-American values that the CSA stood for.

Let's not pretend that slavery wasn't an All-American value for many, many decades. North and South. And the Europeans were practicing slavery long after the South had to stop.

People seemed to have been tricked into thinking that slavery was some kind of exclusive practice in the American South.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flags_of_the_Confederate_States_of_America#Confederate_flag TLDR - The battle flag was never adopted by the Confederate Congress, never flew over any state capitols during the Confederacy, and was never officially used by Confederate veterans' groups. The flag probably would have been relegated to Civil War museums if it had not been resurrected by the resurgent KKK and used by SouthernDixiecrats during the 1948 presidential election.[42]

Shush, you are trying to use logic while they are all riled up. That is basically just poking at the hornet's nest after they have started to swarm.

Just trying to help educate. I'm from the south, I have southern pride, not confederate pride, more people need to know the difference before posting / spreading their ignorance.

I'm from Texas. I have given the same facts several times. I love Texas! But some people will never understand. It is like how some people see the swastika as a terrible thing, when in fact it is SO much older than the Nazi party.

But CNN is running so many articles about the "Confederate flag" flying on government property! Surely they're doing this while fully informed and not just to get as much ad revenue as possible until the next tragedy.

Yeah, this is CNN's fault and not the dipshits flying the flag...

What about the Second and Third Nationals?

Ugh, there's a guy in my town who drives this shitty, beat up pick up truck with two flag-pole size confederate flags attached to the corners of his truck bed. Because it stands out so much, I notice this truck everywhere I go.

Here's the thing. I live in Idaho. This guy's truck has Idaho plates. What the fuck are you doing driving around with that shit up here?! As far as I know, we were never affiliated with the Confederacy...

Stupid will go anywhere.

I live in Ohio. Down the road is a monument to the Ohio regiments that fought in the civil war. Confederate flags are everywhere around here. If they flew them around back then, they'd be hung!

You see this crap all the time in Illinois too. I really enjoy taking my friends from Chicago to this house out in the boonies near the town I grew up in. One side of the roof, facing the road, is painted as a huge confederate flag.

The looks of horror and disgust are worth it. Ever. Fuckin. Time.

Those yellow-bellied traitors got what was coming to them.

I only salute one great flag & that's the 'MURICAN flag. WOO!

Couldn't agree with you more OP.

USA USA USA USA!!!!!

[–]Rehald 2

If our founding fathers saw this thread, they would unsubscribe immediately.

Just like in /r/politics, any sort of dissenting opinion is downvoted and silenced, the souls who want to provide any sort of counter-argument are harrased and vitroled. Truly an un-American behavior. Fellow patriots died for free speech, but the hivemind in this thread does exactly the opposite.

Edit: Downvotes, only further proving my point.

The found fathers would all have half the mind to realize the sarcasm that comes along with this sub.

To be fair a lot of the comments that offer a counter argument are things like "Fuck you! They are Americans also moron." However I agree, there have been a lot of thought provoking posts on this thread which have been downvoted to hell for no real reason other than the fact that it offers a different viewpoint than the one I and the upvoters(in theory) have.

[–]Rehald 2

You're right, I don't approve of posts like "[Personal Attack], [Small argument in a sentence]" either. The worst however is that posts of the same structure are upvoted if it fits their narrative.

Free speech doesn't mean the words coming out of your mouth are right or valuable.

Also, free speech only protects you from government intervention - there's no such thing as private free speech.

[–]Rehald 0

I swear that if this thread gets shut down Ya'll would suddenly complain about how un-American it was to limit free speech by taking the thread down.

"Its only unfair when MY opinions are censored, everyone else who doesn't think like me should be censored!"

I don't think it's very patriotic to shame such an important part of our country's history.

Of course it's a good thing slavery ended; slavery was a primitive mistake. However, the South wasn't all about slaves. The North and South were two totally different worlds, and just because the South that existed 150 years ago doesn't exist anymore, doesn't mean that it didn't contribute to our growth and development as a nation, along with a lot of our uniquely American patriotism.

I live in Virginia, and my ancestors owned slaves. Am I proud of that? No. But I can assure you my great great grandfather wasn't swinging whips around all day.

We shouldn't forget our roots as Americans.

This. The civil war was an internal conflict between brothers; the Confederacy wasn't a historical enemy of America, it was America. The south was fighting to preserve state's rights, which the federal government was heavily encroaching on at the time, and not just on the slavery issue. So the Confederacy was a bunch of rag tag rebels fighting to expand their freedoms, what the hell is more American than that?

The only state's right the Confederacy gave a shot about was the right to keep people as property. Why is this such a hard pill to swallow for some people?

The south was about family, tradition, owning land, agriculture, and independence, to name a few things. SOME large plantation and farm owners owned slaves. Even a smaller fraction of those families abused their slaves. Yes, it was a foolish solution, but for most people slavery was the only way they could tend to so much land, and so the slaves were treated with value and respect, like workers, and often they were treated as members of the family or even paid. Although you read all about the evil southern white man torturing slaves in school, it wouldn't make sense to beat/torture/kill your slaves like in Django Unchained. Slaves were important to you, and ideally you would want them to be healthy and even happy.

I'm not saying this was always the case, but Southerners care about A LOT more than enslaving other people. They weren't motivated by hatred, it was just the only way to get the job done back then without modern machinery.

The victors always write history, and that is why public school will tell you to hate the south, regardless of if you actually care or understand about where I'm coming from.

The root issue of the Civil War was slavery, hence the passage of the Emancipation Proclamation as a part of the war effort. Yes, there were other major differences, but the most crucial one of the time was indeed slavery.

Dear commie Southerners : you can fly the traitor's flag all you want. Put it on the truck you drive, your house, your T-shirt, whatever. But DO NOT claim to be a murican while doing it. And don't even fucking Think about flying it next to MY flag.

I want to get a "Union Life" tatoo in the style of tupac

I want to go on vacation in Savannah and march to the sea.

(In all seriousness though, Sherman's campaign was ruinous to a great many people and this joke is in extremely poor taste)

Stars and bars...fucking losers, get over it.
