So the Treasury is putting a woman on a bill, which is nice I guess, but for some reason it's Hamilton that's being replaced rather than Jackson. I didn't realize that could make me so mad until I saw it.

There was a thread on my front page entitled "icons are black what is happening" which happened to be right under another post from /r/OrthodoxChristianity. I was really disturbed in the two seconds that passed before I realized someone had just installed some Crusader Kings 2 mods incorrectly.

Yeah I'm definitely lost as to why Jackson isn't getting the boot.

From what I read, it's mostly because they aren't redesigning the $20 right now, just the $10? idk I literally just found out about this now.

I'm reading Francis's new encyclical right now. It's really freaking cool that I am able to read history the day that it happens--this is a heck of a time to be alive. It's fascinating so far (roughly 1/3 of the way through), and it's interesting to see how Francis is situating this document relative to other papal pronouncements (both with direct references and indirect commentary).

I'm already making predictions in my notes about what is going to be misinterpreted and quoted out of context in years to come, which is also fun--and potentially fodder for posts here in the future!

I'm noticing an awful lot of English and an awful lack of Latin.

To give just one striking example, I would mention the statements made by the beloved Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, with whom we share the hope of full ecclesial communion.

Did the Pope just give a shout-out?

[–]Domini_canesFëanor did nothing wrong 5ポイント6ポイント  (2子コメント)

It's much much more than that. Decades from now, paragraphs 7-9 might just be the most important part of this encyclical...especially if the pontiff's warm words regarding communion with the Eastern Orthodox come to fruition.

(edited for clarity)

[–]WhoseVirtue 3ポイント4ポイント  (1子コメント)

Is that to do with the specific notes on environmental protection or the citing of the Patriarch?

Paragraph 10 seems to be as good a statement of the Pope's goals as any, under the guise of explaining St Francis.

[–]Domini_canesFëanor did nothing wrong 4ポイント5ポイント  (0子コメント)

The citing of the Patriarch and the concept of full communion between the two Churches is what I was attempting to refer to.

"I would mention the statements made by the beloved Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, with whom we share the hope of full ecclesial communion." (7)

It's gestures like these that could write a new chapter in a story that has been going on for at least a millennium.

The beginning of the encyclical is fascinating.

  • How it situates itself as another Pacem in Terris--not a new Rerum Novarum

  • Citing Benedict, John Paul II, and Paul VI makes this not as much about something novel and more of a continuation of teaching. It's an elaboration

  • Its repeated references to previous social justice encyclicals and teachings places it in that category as well (reference paragraph 14's call to dialogue)

And that's just the first 15 paragraphs (of 246)!

Why isn't it called Thoughtless Thursday to better match with Mindless Monday?

Why does Spanish seem so organized in comparison to English?

Is Trump collaborating with Stewart to bring us the best political satire in history?

Why do I keep seeing people who I have tagged as "Moving to Voat"?

Why isn't it called Thoughtless Thursday to better match with Mindless Monday?

Originally, there was some idea of Mindless Monday being for ranting about little badhistories, and Thoughts for Thursday being for general discussion, but that kinda fell by the wayside.

Why does Spanish seem so organized in comparison to English?

Assuming English is your first language and you're learning Spanish as a second language, rest assured it isn't; it only appears that way because you're less familiar with it. Spanish does have a more phonemic orthography, though. (that is, spelling reflects modern pronunciation more closely)

Is Trump collaborating with Stewart to bring us the best political satire in history?

I would not be surprised.

Why do I keep seeing people who I have tagged as "Moving to Voat"?

Because it turns out that the Fattening wasn't actually the herald of a dark age of oppression, and in fact Reddit has not changed at all in the wake of it. Also it's more fun to whine than to actually do anything.

Why isn't it called Thoughtless Thursday to better match with Mindless Monday?

Because they originally had two very different purposes, but that didn't really happen as you can see from the fact that Mindless Monday and Thoughts for Thursday is basically the same thing

[–]Domini_canesFëanor did nothing wrong 1ポイント2ポイント  (3子コメント)

Why does Spanish seem so organized in comparison to English?

Because it is.

That's not saying much because English is much more of a mishmash of stuff that somehow "works"--I think mostly by pure inertia more than anything else. I seriously pity people trying to learn it as anything other than a child. It has to be endlessly frustrating.

[–]Goatf00t 2ポイント3ポイント  (0子コメント)

Learning English is not that bad. The fact that it's an unholy mess means that it's harder for people to notice when you mess up. :)

[–]websterandy42Sources? Just prax it out. 1ポイント2ポイント  (0子コメント)

Is asking why and how language can become so organized a linguistics question or a history one?

I'm probably going to spend a few minute researching the topic when I get home. And, by "research," I mean the type where I never actually leave Reddit.

[–]alynnidalarThere needs to be cooked is the rice. - /u/badhistory_ss 1ポイント2ポイント  (0子コメント)

English isn't that bad. Its weird bits are more evident to native speakers, but all languages are, in a way, a mishmash of stuff. Grammatically/syntactically, it's not that out of the ordinary for a West Germanic language.

My first therapy session in years is in a couple hours. I got like two hours of sleep and finally feel tired again, but afraid if I try to snatch up an extra hour I'll end up sleeping right through my appointment. So, this is gonna be fun.

Also, been playing Tales of the Abyss lately. Huge fan of the Tales series, and this is one I haven't ever played before. Really enjoying it.

I have bought 5 games from the steam sales. Oh god. I bought Europa Universals and its 1000 expansions for 24 dollar. I played as Sweden and after Denmark royally fucked me by send me to war with my neighbors and then not helping at fucking all, I am free from its terrible reign. I need to make friends with Norway but they still like Denmark for some stupid reason. Also my prestige is -50 welp. How can I get that up?

Also got the game of thrones game and God is that stressful fun. Havent finished chapter one but looking forward too!

[–]WorldOneWonAlexander the Great Didn't Real 3ポイント4ポイント  (4子コメント)

I see another one has joined the EUIV cult. Hope you enjoy never doing anything ever again because EU will suck out your soul.

So Sweden is a fairly difficult start. The whole "Hey these nations are pretty neat!" tooltop at the beginning is BS. Norway is always BFFs with Denmark, so typically Sweden asks the Hansa for a support of independence and usually that is enough. See, ships can block off straits, effectively making sure troops are unable to move anywhere. Chances are that is what happened in your war because the AI isn't the brightest sometimes.

Speaking of AI, it seems to be coded to focus 100% on you. They could be at war with France and are being slaughtered, but as soon as you declare war they get 100k troops and snipe you down.

Best way to get prestige up is to win battles. But it's a pretty shit feedback loop if you have negative prestige. See, your morale is lowered significantly if you have low prestige, meaning it is harder to win battles. So you lose battles and lose prestige. Is the Livonian Order allied with anyone? If not go to war with them and win battles against them to get your prestige up. If you can't do that, spend papal influence to get prestige.

There's soooo much you can do in that game it's ridiculous. And I love it. If Sweden gives you trouble, you can always play as the Ottomans. They start with a ton of cores all over Anatolia so you can grab them easily and for free. Plus they're pretty strong and can roll over their neighbors.

[–]georgeguy007High Chartist Chancellor (was elected tho, like Hitler) 1ポイント2ポイント  (3子コメント)

Well Denmark was the one who brought me into war with the Order, who has like 3 big allies who all neighbor me hahaha.

And I am slowly gaining papal influence but do not have any dukes yet. Is there something I can do (my entire nation is catholic)

[–]WorldOneWonAlexander the Great Didn't Real 1ポイント2ポイント  (2子コメント)

Aside from Spain national ideas, and religious ideas, the best way to get up papal influence is by raising the papal states relations with you.

You mentioned you are out under denmark, are there any big allies you can ally? Hansa should be fairly strong, and they can help you against denmark and norway. You want to expand into both to form Scandinavia. Then I would develop your provinces (if you have the Common Sense DLC) so you have more money/troops. Lubeck is a powerful trade node in the right hands, so you want to snag as much of it as you can before the Hansa do.

[–]georgeguy007High Chartist Chancellor (was elected tho, like Hitler) 1ポイント2ポイント  (1子コメント)

Don't have common sense but still getting the hang of merchants. Is there ever a time that you don't want to push trade to your node (Baltic sea in my case)

[–]WorldOneWonAlexander the Great Didn't Real 0ポイント1ポイント  (0子コメント)

You always want trade to flow into your node. If you are a smaller country (not the case for Sweden) you sometimes want to collect in your home node as well. So you would want to place a merchant in Novgorod and...Kiev I think?

You also want to max out as many trade ships as you can pump out and have then protect trade. This will raise your trade power in Baltic Sea and Novgorod, meaning more ducats for you.

What you want to aim for is Lubeck though. Denmark and Hansa will control most of it, but that's where money is made.

The "internet lawyer" is back for more legal shenanigans in the FPH fallout, and it's as hilarious as the first time.

This time "His Firm" is investigating a DDoS attach on Voat from Reddit. Which is serious business. It's all hush hush, and he can only tell you a few ... well actually quite a few things that he probably shouldn't if he was a real lawyer. This has to be a troll, even as a non-American, familiar with your legal system only through watching Law and Order and Matlock, it's obvious that he's talking out of his arse. Sorry, loquentes de asinam suam (I'll be writing this on the wall all night as soon as someone who really knows Latin comes along...).

I probably shouldn't post this here, because "I'd be very, very careful with comments like this. This is defamation, super faciem suam"

I want to do a dissection of the NASA one, but I'm afraid it won't be suitable for this sub - most of the things they get wrong there are not exactly history.

Urquhart is vastly superiour to Underwood in character, charm and planning. Ian Richardson's Richard III asides are better than Underwoods (I'm not using Spacey here, since it's a fault of the writing and not Spacey, who is a brilliant actor) snide looks in the camera. Also, Richardson was Bill Haydon.

And finally, I'd personally rather seduce Mattie Storin than Zoe Barnes.

My dad keeps waking me up really early and not leaving the house until I'm up and it's really really irritating. My solution at the moment is to just go back to bed as soon as he's gone. This may not work on the weekend though...

Australian politics are god damn ridiculous at the moment, as usual though. The government is not denying that they've actually paid off people smugglers to stop sending boats. Oh and there's a same sex marriage bill going through at the moment and some couple came out by saying they'll divorce if it passes, which has swayed approximately no one's opinion.
