I get the feeling they have no idea where this guy is. The police chief said they'll definitely be putting out reward info tomorrow.

They fucking don't. CPD is pretty incompetent, and nothing like this has ever happened here before. There are helicopters flying around my house, and I'm on the opposite end of the city. I just drove over the bridge and back. I saw no cops, no checkpoints...It's a goddamn Peninsula not many ways to get out. This dude is long gone. Unless there were decent cameras in that church he will never be caught.

I was thinking that too. Block the connector, the ravenel, and the 17 bridge and get the coast guard to lookout for boats. Block off everything trying to go north of the strip clubs. Its not too hard of an area to keep in check, especially at night on a Wednesday.

Its probably too late for that now. If checkpoints at those places you mentioned had been set up immediately following the shooting, he may have been caught by now. But for all we know he booked it and could already be as far out as columbia.

Shouldn't the FBI be involved if it's a state senator killed?

The FBI is already involved. The first report I saw of their involvement came about 3.5 hours ago, right after the tweets about the suspect calling the police station with a bomb threat started popping up on Twitter. Once the threat was made, they apparently declared this an act of domestic terrorism and were on the scene before the mainstream cable media even flashed a headline.

This was before reports of the senator even being present at the time had come out yet but after the point where the suspect's description had been well circulated online. If we combine the fact that (1) it was a shooting at a church (potential for religion-based hate crime) with (2) it was a white shooter and several black victims (potential race-based hate crime) and (3) the senator was a minister there (even had he not been present, still could've been politically motivated attack), I'd say it's pretty safe to assume the FBI was on the scene before the bomb threat had even been called in yet.

The FBI is involved because it could be considered a hate crime (the church where the shooting took place was predominately black). It isn't too reassuring though.

They'll be involved with something this high profile regardless, whether they have a reason to or not.

Is there really no reason for the FBI to be involved in something like this, even if it had been low profile? 9 people are dead, I wouldn't mind some help from the most advanced investigators in the country.

Anytime there is a crime involved in this magnitude the FBI would either take over the investigation or at least aid with all resources available.

Right, I think that's a good thing. It seemed like the original guy I replied to was implying that sometimes there's no reason for them to help.

Its not too hard of an area to keep in check

You're nuts. It's nearly impossible. Speaking as someone who has performed such excercises dozens of times, it almost never actually works.

Especially when the description is: blonde dude without a beard and wearing a grey hoodie.

Not a chance.

blonde dude without a beard and wearing a grey hoodie.

That describes 60% of white males under the age of 40 in Charleston. Hell, that's like 95% of Citadel cadets. It's gonna be a tough one for CPD.

Once the pieces start coming together for something this high profile he will be caught or we will at least know who he is. I'm not saying it will happen right away, but we'll find out who he is eventually at least.

law enforcement has had a really difficult time finding those two escapees in NY (i think they've been out 13 days or something), and their identities are absolutely known. being captured isn't inevitable, but i think you're right that we'll find out who he is. honestly i just really want to know why he'd go shoot up a church.

Report is that state senator Clementa Pinckney, pastor at the church, is among the dead.

https://twitter.com/occupytheport/status/611386313128849409

Is the fact that he is a senator potentially part of a motive? Don't know anything about him or his views

Its possible, though doubtful as he isn't all that well known outside of his district. I follow state politics quite closely and have never heard of him.

Possible. Could be race, politics, sex, or random. At this point casting about for ideas is as effective as trying to snatch smoke.

Edit: or religion. I was tired, dammit.

Well it was the anniversary of the Vesey Revolt and the shooter chose a very famous historically black church. Is it really that wild to speculate race played a part?

Summary of Press Conference with Mayor Joe Riley and Charleston PD Chief Greg Mullins:

  • 9 Dead at Mother Emanuel Baptist
  • More injured, number not revealed
  • Suspect still on the run, call 911 if you have any info on his location
  • Description: White Male in his Early 20s; sandy blonde hair; slender build; clean shaven; wearing timberland style boots, jeans, and a grey hoodie.
  • No confirmation on whether State Senator Rev. Clementa Pinckney
  • Chief Mullins - "This is a hate crime."
  • No discussion about the active investigation, including whether "the photographer" is still in custody. He was released shortly after he was marched in front of the cameras.

Other Relevant Information

  • Prayer Service tomorrow at Noon, location unclear. Rev. Al Sharpton expected to attend.
  • Former FL Governor Jeb Bush has cancelled his planned visit to Charleston tomorrow.
  • Local NBC affiliate confirming State Senator Clementa Pinckney was killed in the church he pastored.
  • Next Press Conference at 3am. Probably won't be up for it, but I expect official confirmation of the State Senator's death at that time.
  • Suspect Description has been updated and made prominent. See the top of this comment and call 911 with any information about the suspect.
  • Bomb threat still active, the media is being moved further up the street from their current location for safety reasons. Maybe not, all the streams seem to be playing replays from a couple of hours ago.
  • No 3am Press Conference, next one will be at 7am. I'll be asleep but will update here when I wake up.

Edits: Added Description of suspect

Reformatted to use for future updates. Not expecting much more news tonight, will update with what I imagine will be a flood of information when I wake up (pretty late) in the morning.

Not going to keep a log of my edits anymore, any new info will be at the bottom of the post, sectioned off as best I can.

That description is so vague. I mean I get that they don't have more but I match that description right now, and I'm sure many do.

It would also describe a good number of males in that area, the church is very close to the College of Charleston.

Now you know what it's like to be a black male.

Officer, Dave Chappelle couldn’t have done that. I saw him in his window masturbating from 2:35 to 2:37. I’m certain of it. He was standing on a clock and holding a calendar and today’s paper.

I live in the lock down zone. Police in riot gear just searched my back yard. They're methodically working their way down the street.

Lock your doors and windows. It has to be unnerving knowing this person hasn't been caught and could still be in the area.

  • he knows those houses are cleared and probably won't be searched again

Why do you think he is still anywhere near Charleston? What's to say he didn't shoot up the church run and say turn a corner and just start walking, hop in a car and just drive off nonchalantly? I would guess there were many cars driving around right after it happened that didn't get stopped and checked.

Honestly, I think you've painted a scenario that is entirely plausible. But I'd still be nervous if I lived closeby.

Yeah, that very well could be - but what are you gonna do, not search the immediate area?

The pastor, Clementa Pinckney, is a State Senator.

Is this supposed to be a joke?

Pinckney spent much of his last day alive on June 17, 2015

Wikipedia already updated the death? I guess it's confirmed guys.caption

I wonder if William Joy on the live stream realizes his mic is hot. He seemed really excited about "how well they were doing" and the increase in people following his twitter account.

edit: grammar

He just realized and the pulled the plug on the audio.

He just fucked his career up. he'll be gone. reporters and shit love disasters and terrible shit happening. gets their face all over the world, doors open. If they are popular and become synonymous with what happened they can get books deals and shit. A disaster is just a possible promotion for a reporter.

Didn't see that on local TV, but they haven't shown him in a while....

This is the problem with american journalism; They release names and pics of suspects. Not convicts, suspects. Sometimes innocent people.

I doubt that. He had a phone interview with one of the TV stations just a moment ago to clear his record.

A TV Station interview isn't going to save him from the thousands of dumbasses on social media posting his picture claiming he's the shooter.

Too late once its out there, the president himself could come out and tell the planet he is innocent, and nothing would happen.

Hell, if Obama said it, more people would likely believe he is the shooter, from what I've gathered.

Wow... they're reporting 8 fatalities so far? Hopefully that number won't rise much. Suspect still on the run, as well.

Theres a bomb threat now too

They are evacuating people on Henrietta across from the church. My friend was on the phone with us and the cops came to the door and told them they had to get out.

Bomb threat now called off.

According to local news, as many as 8 people were shot with multiple fatalities, all unconfirmed. There are also unconfirmed reports that a child is among the dead.

It's really fucking insane. This is starting to look like domestic terrorism.

There are some dumb fucks in this thread who have forgotten that a politically motivated attack on civilians by a non state actor is the definition of terrorism.

You start giving excessive amounts of attention to shooters in the media and this is what ends up happening.

Honestly though, in a situation like this, how can we not?

Wouldn't it be a disservice to people that live in that area to not be fully aware of potential dangers?

And if the locals had to rely on other means of communication for said events, wouldn't that lead them to getting less reliable information and being more prone to crazy conspiracy theories?

I think the reality is that the news will get out one way or another. It's best that we stay informed and rightfully talk crap about a guy who did something like this.

I think you're right with active shooters. If it is a murder/suicide, then don't give the shooter the exposure.

Scanner feed was pretty active up until about 10 minutes ago been strangely quiet since. Police may have switched to digital encrypted channels. http://www.broadcastify.com/listen/feed/18624/web

Edit: Seems only Fire EMS on scanner.

SC police depts. use the Palmetto 800 Network, which is digitally encrypted and hard to listen to on a scanner.

How come there's so little activity?

They might feel that the suspect could have a scanner?

Dude, scanner radio app is free and notifies you when certain scanners blow up so you can tune in!

Twitter and local news is reporting a name that was called into dispatch claiming to be the shooter. Please remember that this call could easily be some kids messing around so don't post any names until they catch this sicko.

Edit: unfortunately some in this thread are posting the name. Please help by flagging those comments.

Edit2: The Charleston police have now release a completely different name from the one that was previously posted here. Thanks to those of you that exercised restraint in the face of a scary but fluid situation.

Please help by flagging those comments.

This is very, very important that you guys don't dox people, because MOST of the time (and yes, really, fucking MOST) whenever there's a suspect this early on, it's not them. By spreading the name around you are quite possibly endangering an innocent person.

Also, if the news have a suspect, the cops do too. There is literally zero need to spread their name around, because the cops already know.

I live one block from there. Its scary hearing the helicopters flying overhead for the past hour nonstop. It always seems like this sort of thing happens in other places, someone else's world. But its here in my backyard and its such a helpless feeling. The fact children were involved makes this even worse.

wow I bet, that would be pretty surreal. have you been evacuated?

No I am on meeting street where it seems they are sending the people evacuated. It's really quiet now for the past 5 minutes

I thought meeting street just got shutdown?

Parts of it may be. It runs through the length of what most consider "downtown"

Gotcha. Not from here but happen to be in the area-ish. Stay safe

I was an international student in the US and in my first year I was on lockdown during a big shooting (Binghamton, NY, 2009). The worst was the lack of information from local authorities and the school.

I got everything from the internet and my grandparents in Europe. They heard it on the radio before me....that was super strange.

Hearing from someone across the planet "dude there's a shooting 1mile away from you, stay the hell inside" was really weird.

i was downtown when it happened. police and emergency response was fast. about ten police cars, three fire trucks, and multiple ems vehicles.

Scanner says possible explosive device on property.

Yes, bomb threats set to detonate on a timer.

And planted around the city. Hopefully this guy isn't intelligent enough to do that because holy shit that would be horrific.

Edit (1:07 AM EST)- Bomb threat over according to police

my guess: he called in bomb threats in locations away from where he is heading to throw off the police and send them covering those areas. a guy like this doesn't call a threat in, he just blows them. he didn't call a threat in before he shot up the church, did he? somewhat clever but also rather predictable.

I think you're right. If he's willing to just waltz into a church and murder more than a half-dozen people, he probably wouldn't be so calculated with setting off bombs.

I hope you are right. I think he's trying to distract until he can get away

If that is true, then this story just got a lot bigger. A sitting state legislator killed in the church in which he was the pastor?

He may have been the target of the shooter.

It is true. June 17th is also the anniversary of the Denmark Vesey slave revolt in Charleston. This Church was rebuilt by his son.

I am not from the area but it seems late for church services. Could this have occured during some sort of meeting? Maybe an AA meeting or something that has no relation to the actual church and it's members?

Edit: AA is not an African American meeting. It is an Alcholics Anon meeting. How someone did not know that amazes me.

It was during a bible study

Must have misses that. Thanks. Just seemed that it is now getting picked up. I thought it happened within the last 90 min range, 10:30ish. Sorry.

A pastor from another church said that Wednesday night at AME usually had prayer service and bible study. The shooting occurred at around 9pm. A bit late, but not out of the question for church services.

I got a text from a friend saying, he knows someone in the area and they told him that this shooter sat in the bible study for 30mins before shooting everyone except one person, "so they can tell the story of what happened."

Third hand info, so take it for what's worth.

He got really into conservation and iirc went off to both rehabilitate and cook the US' bison population. I guess creating a market demand made it viable to raise herds of them or something.

Anyways, I'd rather have a healthy bison population than CNN.

True. He owns about 11% of the world's Bison population, with about 55,000 spread across his ranches. He's a badass.

The color of the shooter matters since they are still looking for him

Don't bring up race! "Uh, we're still trying to find the guy, knowing what he looks like may be of help"

Dr Drew? He's an entertainer- what is he doing on a news channel. There has been a real dumbing down of the news in this country. It's largely infotainment, not news.

He's CNN's chief medical consultantor something like that.

Well, Fox News is currently talking to Trump who is ranting about Obama and Muslims.. . It's really hard to find a good news source these days.

OK, this might be a stupid question, but as a non-American who isn't familiar with where this happened, why is this a hate crime and not domestic terrorism? Were the people killed black?

I'm a resident of Charleston. The church targeted is locally famous. It is one of the first historically black churches in South Carolina. This was normal, at the time, due to segregation. In 1822, a pastor of the church, Denmark Vesey, conspired with over a thousand slaves in the local area to revolt against Charleston's local government. It was found out and he and many others were arrested... in early June. He and 35 others were hung, and the church was burned to the ground. It was rebuilt by his son years later.

You have to remember, the 1800s inform a lot of public discourse in the south. Charleston is still undeniably racist in aspects. Local history talks about the Vesey Conspiracy at length. The gunman targeted the pastor and congregation of the church that has an essential connection to this region's history- essentially mirroring Vesey's death, as he was a minister of that same church.

Charleston, SC has a BIG history of racism and slavery. The church where it occurred is famous for being one of America's oldest predominately black churches and in the time of American slavery one of the nation's largest slave revolts was organized by it's pastor.

Its possible, but it would be oddly coincidental that he chose this church and harbors no racism or hate towards black people.

Let's keep this discussion civil and bear solemnity for the victims

What makes it so sad and scary is the sheer randomness of it. These people ate dinner with their families and went to church - a place where they're supposed to feel safe, be with their family/friends, worship and find comfort and peace. They were doing all the right things, and yet they still became the victims of a homicidal maniac for no other reason than that they were in the wrong place at the wrong time. It could happen to anyone, anytime, anywhere.

When stories like this come up, it makes me stop and think about how fragile our worlds really are and how easily it could come crashing down with little to no warning, even if you're doing all the right things. Sometimes, the only thing separating life from death is a simple, innocuous decision - like going to church on the night of June 17, 2015.

Just goes to show you that you should never take life or the people around you for granted. Always be thankful of what you have and that the people who mean something to you are still here. Cheesy, I know, but you never know if tomorrow's going to be the last day of your (or a loved one's) life and if what you just had for lunch or dinner is going to be your last meal. These poor people certainly didn't.

I came home to flashing blue lights and helicopters buzzing overhead. This happened not even two blocks from my house in Charleston, which I moved into two days ago. The whole thing is unbelievable but being this close, and now living in an area with a probable spike of racial tension is depressing

Just saw on the news report that he was sitting in on a Wednesday night Bible Study for an hour before he opened fire...

Damn. All those people sitting there next to this guy for an hour then all of a sudden he just starts shooting... that's almost worse that if he had just walked into the church and started shooting.

Not sure if that has been posted yet, but CBS Atlanta is reporting on things a survivor supposedly said about the event.

Haircut like that- he won't be hard to find.

If he keeps an electric razor in his car, he could be bald already. Hair is the most easily changable feature on a person--I wouldn't count on it being the same as it was in the video released.

Lots of conflicting reports about who is in custody. Several outlets still reporting suspect at large.

Reports say the guy was praying at the church for an hour before the shooting. Psychopath. I hope he spends the rest of his life rotting in prison.

A group of people are going to protest on a street corner until the suspect is apprehended, according to local news. /u/BlatantConservative

What good is this going to do? Its not like the police aren't actively trying to find and arrest this guy.

I drove into work in downtown Charleston on my normal route from mt. Pleasant and I listened to the local radio broadcasts. A lot of people sound defeated. Even the local weatherman giving his report clearly did not want to be on the air. This is not us. This does not represent my city. This coward is not indicative of how the majority feels. It is, however, a demonstration of views that are still alive and held by ignorant, evil people. I was almost to the bridge when I saw four cop cars on the side of the road with a tall lanky guy in handcuffs. It seemed obvious to me that this was not the shooter, but I am glad the police are not taking anything lightly and it seems as they will be following up on any lead right now. While this community has a horrible history with racism, I feel that most people have learned from it and we are very sensitive to it. We have been quick to hold two killer cops responsible for shooting two black men. We have open dialogues about racism in our communities. But there are people who still say, "heritage, not hate" when wanting to fly the rebel flag... In 2015. We still bare the scars of the past and are constantly reminded of it from outlets both in and outside of the Charleston area. This is just one more reminder that 1) racism is not dead and 2) hateful people are abundant in every community. I'm sorry for ranting but this is sickening. I fooled myself into thinking we Charlestonians were better than this. I am praying for the families of these victims and encourage you to do the same.
