Mexican here. While Mexico is indeed labeled "Catholic" most people I know either don't go to mass; they go only on Sundays (that is about all their involvement with the Church) or they simply have a protestant/new age view of Catholicism.

Some of my friends think it is OK to be Catholic and practice yoga or feng shui, visit mediums, read horoscopes, etc. My best friend who attends mass every Sunday with his family once told me it was the same to be Catholic or Muslim, we all loved the same God and that having sex outside marriage was fine because God was merciful and he couldn't possibly care about small things like that when there were bigger problems in the world.

In my opinion, aside from a poor catechesis, I believe Mexico suffers from the same problem as the U.S. and Canada: people considered themselves Catholics because it was convenient and not because they truly believed; that coupled with how much influence the States has on our culture (e.g. TV shows, movies) and you can see why so many people now think same-sex unions are OK, how abortion is a woman's "health" right, etc.

Sure, Mexico might still have a big population that considers itself Catholic, I am just not sure they understand what it really means to be Catholic so I am not convinced they think of themselves as sitting idly by but they probably wrongly think of this ruling as more of a triumph of "love".

More evidence of "Catholics" sitting idly by.

The thing that annoys me the most about this whole debate is that it completely ignores what marriage is and what it means and ought to mean, and focuses the entire debate on homosexual "equality". Marriage is not about homosexuality. I seriously pray that the Catholic Church never performs / sanctifies homosexual marriages. And for those of you who think that's impossible, think again. A nation of many "catholics" with very strong Catholic roots didn't even stop this. You know who is to blame? Us.

Since a Sacramental same-sex marriage is impossible, so is this. Obviously, some priest or deacon somewhere might cause scandal in the future by simulating a marriage ceremony between two persons of the same sex in a Catholic church, but it will still not be a marriage.

What if the Church changes its doctrine to provide the Sacrament of marriage to two people of the same sex though? I want to believe this is impossible, but is it really?

Yes. See [Matthew 16:18].

Edit: It's been almost 100 years and we have yet to budge on contraception. It's been like 50 years and we have yet to budge on divorce. The Church has survived 2000 years without changing its doctrines. We've gone through much worse issues than Secularism like Arianism, Gnosticism, Donatism, and Nestorianism. We were persecuted by Rome. We were invaded by Caliphates. Do you think some American laws are going to break us?

Good points. And to answer your question, I sure hope not! Unfortunately though it's not just American laws. The entire West is caught up in this same-sex marriage stuff.

The entire West was once feeding us to lions, crucifying us, and beheading us. We'll make it through some sexual fads.

True. There already have been Masses in which homosexual persons have been blessed. :(

That article is awful on so many levels. Besides the obvious tragic fact that gay marriage was legalized in a country, the article makes no attempt to stay impartial -- lauding it as a great victory and hoping the United States will similarly "separate church and state." Moreover, there are numerous typos and other mistakes.

The New York Times, which while not having a great article on the subject, has a far superior one when compared to this Yahoo article.

The most distressing part was the logic employed by the Supreme Court of Mexico.

“As the purpose of matrimony is not procreation, there is no justified reason that the matrimonial union be heterosexual, nor that it be stated as between only a man and only a woman,” the ruling said. “Such a statement turns out to be discriminatory in its mere expression.”

What is the purpose of marriage if it does not include procreation? Why is discrimination necessarily wrong here? I mean, the country has to discriminate between civilians and soldiers whenever its at war under the Geneva Conventions to which it is a signatory. Why can't it discriminate between couples based on the nature of the sexes to reproduce (i.e. a man and a woman often can but neither two men nor two woman ever can)? It's not like discrimination on race where there is no difference between what a white man can do and what a black man can do -- for the heterosexual couple can reproduce or order its union towards procreation, a feat impossible for a homosexual couple.

To be honest this describes pretty much every article on the subject of gay marriage. You could not publish an article that comes across as even remotely pro-traditional marriage.

Don't know where you're looking, I've seen many pro-traditional marriage articles in the last few weeks when all this was going on. All depends on the sources you go to.

What a shame.

It's an absolute joke when somebody who self-identifies as "Catholic" supports gay "marriage". You are worse than the worst enemy of the church, because you are doing nothing to defend the religion you claim to follow.
