Some SJWs confuse justice and revenge. See, justice is pulling everyone up. Revenge is putting people down. “You had your share of male protagonists, now make women protagonists only” would be revenge, not justice.
Not that there's any injustice in the lack of representation, really. You could argue that it's a problem (maybe?), but it's not a problem of injustice. There's nothing unjust about devs writing what they know.

If anything, it's unjust as to how brutaly every female character is being deconstructed to find something wrong with her. It's harming the industry, not helping it.

It's almost like they'd rather not bother creating female protagonists because it will only result in more criticism. It's easy to just make a generic male protagonist because nobody gives a shit about them. They just play.

That's the Galbrush Principle in a nutshell isn't it?

[–]Kinbaku_enthusiast 12ポイント13ポイント  (0子コメント)

Rosangela blackwell is a bit of a galbrush.

As good as that galbrush post is, it's incomplete, because rare as they are, there are female characters like this.

Let's see; make a female protagonist and have people nitpick every little thing about her, or make a male protagonist and only have people complain that he's not a female protagonist.

Also, I think we need to make a distinction between "player character" and "protagonist". Characters can be the latter in a game without being the former. Pey'j and Double H in BGE are protagonists, while Jade is the PC. What SJWs say is that women only count at protagonists if they're PCs.

If I was making video games right now I would make them in my image, or isomorphic spheroids who did not speak and had no gender or color.

Yes! I loved Marble Madness!

Had they made a female lead, then the SJW/Feminazi responses would be, and not limited to:

"Why is she not a WOC/POC?"

"Why is she skinny and attractive?"

"The female lead is an example of unrealistic beauty standards."

etc. etc.

makes racially diverse "nonskinny" female protagonist

why does the media always have to stereotype minorities

Nah couldn't be obviously all devs are just misogynystic it has nothing to do with the fact that one of the foremost critics is bemoaning that you can also be female instead of just female.

The lack of representation is way lower then they are making it to be. It is highest in combat military games and in games build on historical societies. I am women and like when society on game or movie ressemble real one from some period. If that society featured sexism or gender roles, then it is fine for it to be represented in entertainemt.

See, I am stereotypical female in this way - if relationships are present, I prefer them realistic - including ugly side. Games rarely "celebrate" sexism or gender roles, they just occasionally show it.

Moreover, the more you scrutineze every female character, the less likely you are to get good relatable female characters. What you will get instead is idealized crap.

The lack of representation is way lower then they are making it to be

I'm pretty sure most people complaining about female representation are completely oblivious to the entire JRPG genre of games.

And Hidden Object games, which seem to be 90% mother/wife/strong independent woman protag

XD Actually back when they existed, Penny Arcade Report started insisting RPGs are the MOST sexist genre with the LEAST female characters. Seriously. This is because they can't read statistics. They had a list of games with "male only", "female only", and "both/custom" characters released in one year and noticed only ONE "female only" RPG thus jumped to the conclusion that RPGs are the MOST sexist genre because "there was only ONE with a female lead". Not realizing the statistics didn't mean female LEAD it meant female ONLY and that most RPGs either give you multiple characters or a gender choice. (As a side note, this would mean the ONE GAME must be Hyperdimension Neptunia)

Then Ben Kuchera referenced this in a later article about Cosmic Star Heroine, utterly oblivious to the fact that THAT game wouldn't count either.

Yeah, I love how ALL knowledge of videogames just flies out the window once the topic of "teh womens" gets brought up...

...as a further sidenote, other genres that frequently have female characters:

-Fighters

-Survival Horror

-Beat 'Em Ups

-Bullet Hell Shooters

-Puzzle Games (especially old Versus ones)

"Character Action Games" have a decent amount but not as common as those other genres. There are weirdly more first person shooters with women than third person. Platformers are probably the genre with the most weirdly low number of women in them.

Just based on personal observation anyway.

'Bullet Hell Shooters'

Deathsmiles is the shit!

I picked up deathsmiles for like 2 or 3 dollars at a gamestop (I usually try to avoid gamestop, but other stores often only carry newer/more popular games) a few months ago. I haven't gotten around to trying it yet, though. It looks like it has some very bizarre bosses/enemies. I love weird, quirky stuff in games so I'm pretty sure I'll enjoy it.

[–]Daralii [

(As a side note, this would mean the ONE GAME must be Hyperdimension Neptunia)

Which they'd probably accuse of being sexist anyway because there's a lot of fanservice.

But out of the very same mouth very few, if any female characters are seen as anything but "objectification of women".

It's complete fucking bullshit.

SJW's don't like attractive women being portrayed and they don't like overly unattractive women being portrayed, and if you were to perfectly balance a characterization of a woman on that razors edge of being perfectly not too attractive and perfectly not too un attractive, the criticism from the likes of AS will be that the character is too generic with no distinctiveness or personality.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SA0aKjY8K50

SJWs often have trouble distinguishing between an attractive female character, a sexual* one, and an objectified one. In fact, I've seen more than a few actively ignore everything but the sexiness to say female characters are objectified.

*They prefer to use "sexualized", because it implies that the character wasn't sexy until some drooling neckbeard male misogynist developer made her so. It's technically correct, but a weasel word.

Before I learned how to sculpt* the criticism of asset creators/game designers was something of a black box to me. SJW/Feminists would throw out "Sexualization" "Objectification" and I would only argue against those merrits from the outside looking in, and they were arguing against from the outside looking in.

Since I've learned (and continue to learn) - I came to a realization, I don't think it is possible for someone to do their job of creating a character without loving the Human form- at least not a professional looking character. Also, when you create it yourself, there is zero titillation from it NONE - but there is a large amount of pride and love for the creation.

You cannot create realistic characters "with a hard on" - so to speak, it would never work and the process simply doesn't follow. After learning I realized the claims of sexism from developers were even more unfounded as every single one of your creations, be it from a writer's perspective, an animator's or a modeller's - are someone you love, even if you write them as a villain, or the hero, or a love interest for the hero/heroine.

What these SJW's/Feminists are essentially claiming is that the creators of these worlds and characters don't love the worlds/characters.

That's simply impossible.

*yeah, I know, the feet, I had them done but forgot to bring them in before the screenshot, it's just a from my personal exercises and isn't supposed to be a finished model.

You cannot create realistic characters "with a hard on" - so to speak, it would never work and the process simply doesn't follow

Exactly. It might sound strange, but I try not to write (certainly not about anyyhing sex related) while horny, because what I write then tends to be crap wish fulfillment when I read it back and I need to rewrite it anyway. To a lesser extent this also applies to writning about food while hungry lol

George "Fuck All My Fans" Martin can probably attest to this.

You can always tell when that guy is on a diet.

I've brought up this point before - people with any sort of art background would never believe that showing the naked female form is somehow muhsoggyknees or oppreshun! To build on what you're saying, if you've sculpted before, you can often find yourself appreciating a particular muscle as being beautiful (male or female). They're just ugly people inside and out and as is the common SJW theme, want to pull everyone and everything down to their level.

Well yeah, so much of the work to 'increase diversity in gaming' is based on tearing down 'men's games': this game is sexist, that game doesn't have a female lead, and so on. If there's a huge untapped market (as they claim), that are just waiting for the kinds of games that they approve of, then surely there's no need to tear down the 'man games', since this new audience isn't buying them anyway.

I personally want to see writers put whatever they want into games, and I'll play a good game whether the main character is a man, a woman or a ferret with a wellington boot for a hat, but to argue that there's a huge untapped market, and then act like some games must go to make space for new ones is inconsistent. I am not denying the existence of this new market, but if it's there then companies do not have to 'make room', it's not a zero sum.

How about a game like Sim City, but instead of building a city you build a Sim Twitter account? You try and amass followers and get hashtags to trend.

They'd just stay on regular twitter. It's their favorite game, and they get to play for free (and sometimes make money)

But not everyone's good at it. Just like not everyone can manage a city. This would give all the wannabe Anitas their chance to be in the driver's seat. They could build their own Social Justice Thought-Leader from the ground up. What kind of earrings will she wear? What kind of makeup? What color of non-offensive plaid flannel shirt? You could battle virtual trolls without the fear of getting Twitter-PTSD the same way dudebros play Call of Duty without the risk of getting real-PTSD.

I haven't listened to an episode of indoorkids since.

In certain extreme situations, the law is inadequate. In order to shame its inadequacy, it is necessary to act outside the law. To pursue... natural justice. This is not vengeance. Revenge is not a valid motive, it's an emotional response. No, not vengeance. Punishment.

This, in my mind, is why it's called Social Justice Warrior. Warriors don't bring others up, they don't bring balance, they destroy.

"Warriorrrsss....come out to shaaaame"!

It's also not even revenge when it's "men vs. women". People aren't responsible for what someone else has done, just because they have the same gender as them.

Nor do people share in the suffering of someone else, just because they have the same gender as them. You can't undo an injustice committed against someone by compensating someone who isn't them but happens to share an arbitrary trait.

Some people do actually see harmful actions towards the ones they see as opressors as justified. Which is an eye for an eye kinda thing. It's revenge. You've hurt me, I will hurt you.

You're arguing that it's not revenge based on the fact that it's not in any way justified. But that's irrelevant. The behaviour speaks for itself.

Forget gaming. Modern feminism is exacting revenge on men through the universities, court system, hiring in corporations and the law. Men are thoroughly screwed in life. Gaming is just the cherry on top of the shit cake.

Yet another example of how this has nothing to do with balancing and equality but more about revenge and punishment.

It isn't enough that women are represented in games, men should be under-represented, why? For no other reason than Anita is a bitter person. Because in her opinion this is less to do with equality and more about revenge, she's had her time being bullied and now she wants to be the bully.

No, she's right. We gotta make up for lost time! If 100% of games from here on out used only female main characters, how many years will it take developers to atone for their sins? 10 years? I think 10 years is a good number.

I think they're losing relevancy, and this is FF's equivilent of click baity articles to make a quick buck (or in this case, attention). I just searched "anita sarkeesian" on youtube in incognito mode (which from what I understand makes it not show personal preferance), and the top 3 results were Sargon, Amazing atheist and Thunderfoot.

Their latest video had around 163k views (and was really hard to find without searching for the exact name of it, just feminist frequency and I couldn't find it by page 4 and gave up). Compare 163k to 2 423k back 2 years ago with the tropes vs women videos and you see the outreach of the videos has decreased drastically.

Why? I think mainly 2 reasons.

  1. Time passes, and people lose interest over time. Especially when I assume that more of the fans are mainly feminists rather than mainly gamers, and therefore don't really care that much about gaming in the long run. FF might have made most of their money last year in the 4th Q of the year, and the most attention. But that money is mostly from companies who want to look good, and the attention is mostly because of the victim narrative rather than the actual work.

  2. The latest videos are about positive characters. And really, those who feed upon perpetual outrage don't really care about positive or good characters or improvement in the industry. They can't yell at people trying to make themselves feel better based on positive characters. You can see it for example with fallout 4. When the first trailer came out "Damn Bethesda making the protagonist male!", then yesterday at E3 when they revealed you could customize the character and pick a girl they weren't happy about this, but rather mad about a guy in a dress that was shown to show how much customization you can do in the game. Or in this case, complaining that you can also play as a male.

These people will never be happy, and frankly, I don't think they want to be.

There's another reason why Anita maybe losing hits on her videos that has entirely to do with youtube's algorithm, the subscriber burn effect.

Didn't know about that, thx for the video. That would probably have something to do with it.

Yeah- this is why so many youtubers are reluctant to take breaks even if they can afford it or have major health issues (like TB) The longer you go without releasing videos, the more youtube will think that since people aren't watching your videos that they aren't interested in your content and will stop featuring it on your sub box. Even a week or two of inactivity on normally active channels can lead to subscriber burn (and the subscribers who are burned will likely never know that they've been burned unless they actively seek out the youtuber to check for new videos)

Of course she is. The game is including kick-ass women to play as. Anita is running out of shit to complain about, and she makes a living out of complaining.

makes sense why Joshnita is going after violence in all video games now, they're hoping to tap into the "think of the children" market now that they've drained the feminist bank accounts and accomplished fuck all with the money

This issue is getting out of hand now, personally I couldn't care what gender the characters are videogames because games are about having fun on your own or with friends, and I think gaming is inclusive to everyone and needs to, to make gaming even more accepted in society. To get rid of these stupid stereotypes that the general public have on videogames. Another reason for the need of inclusiveness in games is the fact that games cost millions of dollars to make, so the more people that play videogames, the better. Decisions shouldn't be left to SJWs but the creators themselves, they should have the final decision on characterisation. SJWs are not fighting for justice but for revenge and it has to stop. That's why I am Egalitarian because I am not fighting for women's/men's rights, I am fighting for equality.

[–]Xzal 7

I just love the argument "There is enough of (X), therefore no more (X). That is as lazy and as stupid as it get's.

They are stupid. I mean the SJWs have a brain, but only one. And that they have to share.

Definitely. It seems like a statement made out of wanting revenge rather than wanting to right some sort of imbalance.

"People held my people (not me personally) down for years! Now it's my turn to push others down!"

Seems like a really weird way to go about life.

An apostrophe shows either a missing letter:

"It's going to be great." = "It is going to be great."

Or possession:

"That hat is Tom's."

If what you're typing is not a contraction of something ("As stupid as it get is" is clearly incorrect) and it's not some sort of possessive (get's what exactly? Is 'get' someone's name?) then you should drop the apostrophe because it doesn't need it.

[–]Cross_of_Coronado 2ポイント3ポイント  (1子コメント)

You're right! "stupid as it get's" Is a baad mistake and quite cringeworthy . I'm german thought so maybe not all hope is loft as this is not my native language. Thank you for taking the time and correcting though. Many don't like it but I'm always very happy if someone takes the time!

Edit: Also I swear to god that I normally don't make that kind of mistake. Search my earlier postings I'm sure that this mistake is quite rare. But that one I did not see.

That's okay, I thought I'd just point it out just in case!

I only learnt because people pointed it out to me at some stage, I hope other people can learn as well. I don't think there is anything wrong with making mistakes as long people learn from them!

A note about possession. It's become so common to use 's to denote possession people have forgotten that it's actually just a contraction. Around the 1600's, or thereabouts, it was correct to say, for example, John has dog or John his dog which was commonly shortened, in the usual way, to John's dog. So there really is no difference between a contraction and a possessive. They're all just contractions.

She doesn't actually want anything to change, she just wants people to acknowledge her. It pisses me off so fucking much.

it's probably why these big publishers think there's money to be made in pandering to SJWs, they're so incredibly susceptible to marketing - but what the publishers don't know yet is that they're not the type of people who buy Dishonored or Fallout 4.

More and more, I am led to the inevitable conclusion that Anita and SJWs like her essentially are motivated by an intolerance, if not outright hatred, of men and masculinity. They just don't like them and so when they started being interested in a particular hobby where men are the majority, they tried to create a social movement to force the hobby to self-censor and stop appealing to men so as to eject men from it. That way, they get their "safe spaces" where everything is only made for them and they don't have to suffer the presence of markers of masculinity (that they even call "toxic", no they don't mean a "toxic" brand of masculinity, they mean that masculinity in itself is toxic). What did everyone think those "gamers are dead" and "gamers don't have to be your audience" were all about? It was about trying to get game companies to stop making games for the primarily male gamers who have been around for years if not decades, and instead turning their focus only on the SJW "neo-gamers".

So when Anita and her SJW gang started whining about how Gamergate was about male gamers trying to eject women from gaming, it was actually projection. It was them that were attempting to eject men from gaming so as to be more comfortable in it, when people fought back, they assumed that they must be mirror versions of themselves, and so that those that fought them were actually men trying to eject women from gaming, when in reality, they are a diverse group of gamers that refuse to see their community be forced to change to satisfy the egos of a few colonizers, and that refuse to be complacent when these colonizers try to eject them.

The SJW can make their own games if they want, gamers don't care. FPS gamers have tolerated MMORPG gamers, PC gamers tolerate console gamers, they can tolerate a bunch of lousy PSA games existing. But that is not enough for the SJW, they want more, they will not stop until the entire world is their "safe space" (maybe a bit hyperbolic, maybe not...).

Wait wasn't Dishonored one of her picks for examples of games with violence against women because of what the villians do in the opening cutscene?

And now they're looking for reparations. Open your wallets everyone, these poor oppressed rich white kids need your money to feel better about the bad things your (their) grandparents did to women.

The "make up for" bit seems to be the core of a lot of the SJW-business. It's not enough for people to do things right, because then what will we have to complain about?

Breaking news feminist icon is hypocritical on the internet. In other breaking news some games are violent.

I would just love to see Anita go to places where there really is misogyny like in the Middle East and see if she could even attempt to fix it. Because, she wouldn't be able to. Hell, pretty much all the SJWs wouldn't be able to. But it's a lot more important to do that then complain about the random shit and never be happy with anything happening in Video Games which is not real life. How about India? That is actually a rape culture. Not the United States. People like her disgust me. They bitch and moan about dumb shit like this and they don't even know how good they have it.

She's a typical Marxist. She needs to "fix" the United States first.

It's not interesting what Anita thinks when she's already clarified how she looks at the world.

note on context: she explained how she saw the world after becoming a feminist and it's only the last part, "you have to point it all out" that she stopped doing because she knows it's socially unacceptable. That's why's she's smiling, making a joke about how she 'used to be' towards a feminist audience

Ok. Then go make a game. Nothing is stopping you. If you want something, fucking create it. The technology and knowledge are available and attainable. Don't shit all over someone else's creation because it doesn't conform to your point of view.

[–]Dimnos 1

Anita has not played Dishonored. She gives no shits about the story or the characters of that world, otherwise the thought of spending time with both Emily AND Corvo together again would be amazing to her.

Seriously, anybody who was a fan of Dishonored's story would be thrilled that Corvo is also playable and since the gender of the protagonist is entirely story related, since gender doesn't effect gameplay, my only assumption is she has not played Dishonored and will not play Dishonored 2.

That can't be serious pls

"we have a ton of lost female representation to make up for"

Is that why practically every movie between 2000 and 2005ish had a black guy for comedy relief in it? Making up for lost black representation?

My question is - why should there be a female protagonist? Why? If the story calls for it, then there will be a female lead.

I guess she's never heard of The Longest Journey or Syberia.

I'm getting so sick and tired of this "Dishonored has a female protagonist" bullshit.

No. The headline is not "Dishonored has a female protagonist." The headline should be "Emily Kaldwin Is A Badass Assassin In Dishonored 2."

The real sexist shitlords are the ones that see her as nothing more than a walking vagina to fulfill their gender quotas.

Smash the gender binary? What does choosing a female character do beyond adding tits? Why not relable the choices "tits" and "no tits"? Who would complain?

We should have a few games with female-only protagonists. But then I want all of the foes to be females, too. When I'm blasting, hacking, and sawing my way through a game I want to see lots and lots of female blood and body parts. Along with graphic death animations and audible screams.

Hate to be the devil's advocate but you're putting words in her mouth.

Her exact words were, "sad that it didn't see the leap to female lead" how is that outright saying they should not have male protagonists now? I want you to find me the words that state that games should not have male leads.

This is like me saying, "I'm really bummed that new Star Wars movie didn't make the jump to pure 3D" --- and then having you say "Oh so you think movies shouldn't be made unless they're in 3D huh?" Ya the chick is bummed that there isn't an exclusive female protagonist but that's all there is to it. You're reading into things that aren't there.

Keep distorting facts and reality to suit your narrative. You're so different from all those crazy SJW's!

I get Anita's logic here. She wants them to go all in on a female character. She wants a major publisher with a heavily hyped AAA action game to say they believe it can succeed purely with a non-sexualized female protagonist who isn't a "legacy icon" like Lara Croft, no hedging their bets with a male option, so that the game's (hopeful) success can be used as a lesson to other devs that female leads are commercially viable.

As an observer of this fiasco, I admit, I'm curious, I'd like to see a company do that and see if it sinks or swims, it'd be an interesting experiment.

But I also realize why Bethesda isn't gonna do it, especially not with an existing franchise whose established fanbase likely have certain expectations about what the game is. Because they're not in the business of experimenting, they're in the business of business, and they don't want to take the risk. Don't get me wrong, I'd like to see devs be willing to take more risks in a lot of ways, and I applaud the effort with Dishonored 2, that trailer looked awesome after all, but I completely understand their desire to have some degree of safety net.

As for my opinion of what Dishonored actually DID...Emily and The Outsider were the most interesting characters in that game, I definitely wanted to see more Emily (I hope my choices mattered to this game's backstory), but did I really want to PLAY as Emily? I'm not sure. If you want better written, more compelling female characters in gaming, at least in certain genres I'm not sure making them playable protagonists is actually a good way to go about it. Corvo was a silent blank slate, it was all the OTHER characters in Dishonored who were interesting. Emily deserves better than to be my featureless avatar, so unless they change the formula of the game and include more cutscenes and bioware style dialogue scenes, I fear that making Emily playable would be a waste of her character. I'm also not 100% sold on the story, it seems like a total repeat of the last game, and the Mark of the Outsider is supposed to be super rare, so the chances of both (probable) father and daughter getting it seem ridiculously low. IMO they should have done something like make Corvo the magic/super powers character, and Emily more tech and gadget based. Mind you, I have nothing against a playable female protagonist in Dishonored, I'm just not sure it should be Emily herself. Perhaps they'd have done better to say that Corvo got old and had to step down as Lord Protector, and Emily's new playable bodyguard was a lady.

Well, actually, the thing about occasionally being forced to play a certain gender for a character is that it changes things. It forces you to recognize them as people. PBS Game Show has a great bit about this. Shouldn't be every game, but I would love games with mandatory female/non-white main characters
