The Chatter's Guide: Chatting with /r/vegan

Are you in the mood for some chatting with other vegans? The /r/vegan community has provided us with a chatroom. Here's all you need to know.

Access Through an IRC Client
If you have an IRC client such as mIRC, xChat or Pidgin etc, can access the channel with these properties:
Server: irc.snoonet.org
Port: 6667
Channel: #vegan
Direct link: irc://irc.snoonet.org:6667/vegan (opens up your IRC client)
⬩ General Information
IRC stands for Internet Relay Chat and has been used for ages for chatting purposes mainly. For more information about this protocol, please visit irchelp.org.
Rules
- Treat your fellow chatters as polite as possible to prevent unnecessary fighting. Civil discussions.
- Sharing personal information about other users without their permission & knowledge is prohibited.
- No spamming. If no one answers, don't keep repeating yourself.
- No trolling. Trespassers will be shot/banned.
- Selling/buying/trading things in the main chat is not allowed. Please use a private chat window for that purpose.
- Personal abuse is not welcome.
The operators can kick/ban an user at any time if he/she violates these rules. Keep in mind that non-vegans are welcome as long as they follow the rules above.
Registering a Nickname
To make sure you keep your nickname safe, you should consider registering it. Follow this guide.
- Go to the chatroom and pick a nickname.
- Login and write (don't forget the slash or else you'll expose your password and email): /msg NickServ register PASSWORD E-MAIL
- Go to your e-mail inbox and follow the instructions on how to verify your account.
- Once you get an confirmation message in the chatroom, you're done! Your nickname is now reserved.
Operators
An operator (OP) is a user with full control over the channel. This user can ban, kick and promote other users.
Private Messaging
For one-on-one chatting, you can chat privately with an user, by typing /msg NICKNAME. This will start a new window (query).
Away & Idling
If you want to remain online in the channel while being away or busy, please use /away REASON to inform other users. They'll get your reason as a response if they type your name.
Joining Another Channel
To join another room on the same server, type /join CHANNEL.
Changing Server
If you've connected to the wrong server, or need to change it for some reason, type /server SERVER in the input field.
Looking Up an User
Some users share their names, e-mail addresses and other details which can be accessed by typing /whois NICKNAME. This will also expose hostnames and other data such as joined channels. Be aware that this can be done to your account too, so make sure you're not sharing any secrets.
