Never thought I would grow sympathy and affection for a comet landing device. I genuinely feel happy because of this.

Me too and I think these cute videos of ESA helped a lot.

and this picture

I hope more videos will come out soon. My daughter really enjoys them, and who am I kidding, I probably like them even more.

The style of these videos reminds me of the "Once upon a time..." seventies TV series. You might enjoy them, if you can find an appropriate dub / translation :-)

I am adult and I cried like a little baby when Philae went to sleep in the last one. :(

Oh wow that is adorable. I anthropomorphise space craft too much as it is and this kind of thing just makes it worse! :-P

Thank you for sharing that link! Already finished watching the whole rosetta and philae series. Waiting for more xD

Looks like a blue spongebob

That was awesome my nephews will love it. But it kind of made me feel irrationally sad for all of those space probes that have visited their comets and are just cursing in space forever, they must be bored as hell, or even worse the ones that burned up in Earth's/some other celestial body's atmosphere.

After those adorable ESA youtube videos, it was difficult not to.

Glad I'm not the only grown up who found those videos extremely charming.

It would be inhuman not to. I really hope NASA takes note. That was great PR.

You probably don't remember Pathfinder, the little rover that could. It endeared the hearts of millions.

Oh I do. But from what I remember of it, most of the cartoons and comics were made by outside entities, and not NASA themselves.

Personally, I love the realistic renderings that NASA does of its missions, but maybe having something for kids like these cartoons would be beneficial as well.

It also saves Watneys life!

Oh come on, man I was about to start reading the book today. This better not be some spoiler shit

Nothing to see here. Move along.

Nah you're good. No spoilers above beyond the first page of th book. Enjoy it! Great book that I could not put down !

Nah it happens early on. Not really a spoiler

Hell yeah, that book is amazing!

As a european, I feels weird reading this, because I really think the european space industry seriously lacks PR skills compared to NASA

Most European businesses and organisations suck at PR compared to the US.

A notable example is higher education. You'll find UK universities that are ranked the same or even higher than Ivy League colleges, but market themselves poorly and so are not well known internationally. It's a shame, because they deserve the reputation and prestige but lack the PR to build it up.

You could say the same about the EU government vs the US government.

Europe needs to get its shit together and step up the quality and quantity of marketing in its institutions. With the right PR, it has massive potential to get itself much more renowned in the world.

I agree but Republicans on the Hill would use that as an example of wasteful government spending.

ESA makes some damn good videos.

what about Spirit ?

One of the saddest xkcd comics ever.

So after 98 years from landing on Mars, Spirit'll know how heroic he was?

I'll be gone by then, but it's nice to know he'll finally know how proud we all are.

[–]PM_ME_YOUR_FEELINGS9 24ポイント25ポイント  (1子コメント)

I was heart broken when it landed in a dark area. This is fantastic news.

It's hard not to be impressed, the little thing just keeps on breaking records.

They're seriously built like action heroes, Philae and Opportunity just keep on going.

Hell, for all we know Huygens is still sending out data, it's us who aren't there to listen for it.

That's so sad to think about. Little Huygens still working so hard not knowing that no one is listening on the other end

Huygens didn't have solar panels, it just had a battery. Titan's atmosphere is too smoggy for solar panels to work and it's too far from the sun anyway. Cassini is still working at Saturn because it has an RTG.

If you didn't feel any affection for rovers your heart is dead.

"Hey .. hey guys. Can I come back now? I'm done with my mission. Guys?!"

I cheered! This is a great feat of human engineering, to land a probe on a comet, and have it actually succeed... the first time!

I honestly teared up a little myself.

This fucking thing never did anything close to what it was supposed to to, and it's still not going to do anything ...

It's a miracle, yes, that the fucking thing bounced up against a cliff and has over 7 months captured enough energy to communicated with the Earth. That doesn't mean it's a success, it's just luck.

I literally just yelled in church, I was very attached...

I'll see you all in TIFU, I'm getting a lot of weir looks.

probably because, you know, science...in church.
