I see a lot of people using the term "transracial." As a black trans woman the mere suggestion is offensive. The fact people are connecting this to trannsexuality makes me want to punch a fucking wall. Not only does it undermine my transgender brothers and sisters struggle, it completely undermines the life experiences of racial minorities by suggesting white people can just easily jump in and out whenever they want without repercussion. Us black people can't change our race, you can however, change your gender, and the transracial thing makes me want to do a Looney Tunes esque spit take. At the end of the day, this lady is still white. She lied about her history and background, us transsexual are just trying to express who we are as individuals. Race is hereditary, gender is social. just the hint of comparing the two, while saying some white lady can pretend to be black makes me want to punch shit.
I have read things like "this lady has done more for the black community than these black people sitting behind their keyboards" It makes me want to choke a fucker. The NAACP, when it first got off the ground was started by whites, and the only affluent in the black community were allowed to join and have a voice. People like W.E.B Dubois had to pass paper bag tests in order to join the NAACP, and anyone darker in tone than a paper bag was not allowed to join. Even when an organization is created to claim to speak for black people, we weren't allowed to be a part of it unless we were light skinned. And he we are, 100 years later, and some fucking chick who puts on bronzer pretends to be black and people are talking about how oh so much better she did the job than actual black people. I spit on this entire situation. It makes me sick.

Wait, what evidence is there to actually support the claim that she's done a 'better' job than any black person? What are her actual accomplishments in regards to the NAACP's mission statement? There's certainly nothing to that effect on her wikipedia page. Because this sounds like white people regurgitating their usual spiel.

(In case it gets taken down -- because she's definitely catching heat for it! -- she wrote, "Let's just all thank #RachelDolezal. Identity, pathological, & parental issues aside, she's doing more than most of us do for ourselves.")

The misguided Toms and Tomasinas always come out when stuff like this happens.
You can always tell the Black people who have nothing to do with Black communities at large and who have no significant ties to Black organizations. They are the ones claiming that some other person is doing more for Black people than Black people are doing for themselves.
Keri should worry about why most of her albums went triple cardboard instead of opening her mouth and making a fool of herself on social media.
Also, Spokane has like 2000 Black people at most. I fail to see how this impostor did more for Black people in general. I don't recall ever seeing her in the Crisis either, so whatever to this chick, Keri, and anyone who wants to cape for this madness.

I've been up since 3AM doing work, so I'm grumpy, lol!
But, hey, at least she has Serge! He's so beautiful. Too bad his girlfriend is dumber than a box of rocks.
If Serge were my boyfriend, the last thing that would be on my mind is posting nonsense on Twitter. She should get off of Twitter and pay more attention to him before he breaks up with her again and have her posting dozens of sad faces and inspirational quotes on Instagram like she did last time.

[–]wisesonACcounting down the days until the black panther movie!! 18 points19 points20 points  (3 children)
Fucking hate when people delete their comments. Anyway they said this
Absolutely. She harmed no one and helped many. I will never support attacking someone for expressing who they feel they are as a person as long as that expression does no harm. It's not like she appeared for speeches and then went home, scrubbed her face and enjoyed a life of white privilege. She is who she is, regardless as to whether you agree with it.
I can't get down with that. I get what you are saying. Yes she has done good things and helped people. But doesn't changed the fact she is a white women. She's gotten paid multiple times to speak about her personal experiences "as a black women" when she isn't a black women. And all that other stuff it's messed up. She can feel like she's black or supposed to have been black but she's not and she damn near donned blackface to appear so.
Here is an article she wrote, saying "we black women": http://m.inlander.com/spokane/a-womans-worth/Content?oid=2425703
This is my real issue here she doesn't just change her hair she actively refers to herself as a black women. She hired a actor to play her "black dad" and her adopted black brother as her son. She often speaks about being a black women and the struggles that come along with it but for her if she straightens her hair and gets rid of the tan then she's a white woman again. And she'll be treated as such. For actual black people obviously it doesn't work like that. We can can change whatever it about us hair, eyes, clothes whatever but we'll still be black and treated as such. Of course there are black people who can pass for white. But in the context here they wouldn't be changing anything, they can already pass.
Nothing is wrong with her being white. Most things in her life she still could have done as a white woman. I don't understand why she felt the need to pretend to be black when there are white people in the NAACP teaching African studies etc. Identity issues maybe? One of the things I find disturbing and really messed up is that she was getting paid to "speak on experiences as a black women" like that's like 3 types of messed up. Actual black women now are losing out because a white women tans and perms her hair to look black and wants to talk about her experiences as black women. I'm happy she was down or whatever but she could have been down without damn near putting on black face.
[–]garnetsquarefro 15 points16 points17 points  (1 child)
All of this.
A few points:
Every time a white person pretends to be black, they pick and choose the aspects of blackness they like and discard the burden, every time, they profit from it.
Rachel made money giving speeches. She mentored kids who now know that her messages of what they could be and do despite their blackness rings hollow, because she played with her idea of what she, a white woman, thought of their lives.
She wasn't just born a white woman. She is a white woman who lived most of her life with privileges and got bored or whatever and decided to put on a costume, to play act the real pain experienced by millions of people.
Ask yourself would you be upset if someone pretended to be raped, became the head of an organization against rape, and frequently gave speeches about her recovery only to find out later that she was never raped?
Imagine how real victims of sexual assault who took inspiration from this person would feel finding this out.
Would you defend that person because of all the good they have done?
Would you call them a transrape survivor?
Transpeople aren't using other people's pain as a fucking costume and in fact assume MORE violence, risk, and social difficulty in the pursuit of matching their exterior to their interior.
This bitch, took all the bits she could use to advance herself within the community she was invading and none of the burden.
Remember that as a white woman, she could only pretend to be the lightest black woman, and that in and of itself is selecting privilege.
Really the worst offense, beyond the blackface, and appropriation is pretending she got the systematic and personal abuse of those who experienced it for real. I can't imagine the violation those she mentored feel. Beyond disgusting.
[–]chatterboxing 5 points6 points7 points  (0 children)
She's gotten paid multiple times to speak about her personal experiences "as a black women" when she isn't a black women.
And this is what is so disturbing.
What's even more sad is that she didn't even have to do this. As you said, NAACP has always had White members who are welcome and free to participate just as any other member is.
I feel as if this is one of the things that people don't understand about Black people. We tend to be very welcoming to and accepting of outsiders, sometimes to our own detriment.
She would not have been the first White president of a NAACP chapter, that's what makes all of this even more crazy. She probably would have been elected had she told people she was White, especially in a city like Spokane.
She messed it up. She could have gone down in history as an awesome NAACP president who happened to be a White lady. Instead, she'll be remembered as the chick who donned blackface to be down. It's sad.
[–]badkarmabum 10 points11 points12 points  (0 children)
The fact that people could even compare being trans to walking around in black face, appropriating culture, and allegedly fabricating hate crimes against herself just shows how far we have not come. A white cisgender woman getting bored and deciding to put on a minstrel show is not even in a league of people just trying to be themselves. It's literally the opposite.
[–]bluemeawayThey was hatin' on the internet, I couldn't tell. 34 points35 points36 points  (3 children)
Just the phrase trans-racial catches ALL the side-eye from me. People draw shallow ass conclusions between trans-sexual and this woman's deceit because they are unable to think critically. Everything is not simple and equal. When you add variables, the equation changes.
[–]pro_creator actually Jake from State Farm 41 points42 points43 points  (2 children)
And let's be real, they don't give a fuck about trans issues. Trans women out here getting murdered left and right and these assholes are quiet as church mice. They're just desperate for a way to justify their bigotry and silence black outrage.
[–]bluemeawayThey was hatin' on the internet, I couldn't tell. 20 points21 points22 points  (1 child)
several snaps! And they get to knock out two birds with one faulty-logic stone. Silence outcry against racism and silence support of Trans women and men. They don't care if they don't make sense, they don't care if they're wrong. They want to disenfranchise other people, end of story.
[–]pro_creator actually Jake from State Farm 14 points15 points16 points  (0 children)
RIGHT! The ONLY time they care about "trans" issues (as if this is some legit trans identity) or black women is when it's a white woman trying to blackface her way through life. The jig has left the building.
[–]TextofReasonOld beige mixed lady 6 points7 points8 points  (8 children)
Surely they were just making a bad joke.
This story confuses me, though. Does this girl have African ancestors that her parents want to sweep under the rug and the daughter is proud of?
Or did she just get bored with being a white girl?
She recounted hunting their food with bow and arrow, beatings with a “baboon whip” and living inside a Montana tepee http://www.nydailynews.com/news/national/naacp-leader-rachel-dolezal-lied-black-parents-article-1.2255743
dafuq?
Can somebody explain it like I'm 105? You won't be all that far off.
[–]wafflebread 6 points7 points8 points  (7 children)
Her parents said this:
“She’s clearly our birth daughter, and we’re clearly Caucasian — that’s just a fact,” Lawrence A. Dolezal said in an interview from his home in Montana on Friday. “She is a very talented woman, doing work she believes in. Why can’t she do that as a Caucasian woman, which is what she is?” Ms. Dolezal did not respond to numerous phone calls, emails or knocks on her door in Spokane, Wash., on Friday, but the allegation lit up the Internet, fueled by Ms. Dolezal’s apparent refusal to give a direct answer about her racial background, and by family photos of her as a blue-eyed teenager with straight blond hair.
And here is a picture of her today vs. in her youth. She is a blonde-ass white woman. Don't look a lick of black, and her parents say she has European ancestry. It's obvious she bronzed her skin and has been getting perms on her hair to make it look natural. Here is a picture of her getting married in 2000. She's didn't start being "black" until 2005. It's an obvious deception on her part.
[–]TextofReasonOld beige mixed lady 10 points11 points12 points  (0 children)
Good Lord! Can you even imagine how much work that would be?! Day in, day out, and what did she do when it rained and her "melanin" started dripping down the front of her blouse?
She's not a lazy woman, have to concede her that...

The problem is that she has a position power with a black organization. Having knowledge in black american studies, she should be well aware of the historical nature of race relations, especially as white people and their opinions take precedence over black ones, yet here she is being the president of an NAACP chapter, lying about her heritage, while taking away the opportunity for actual black people lead our community. That is the problem.

      [–]wafflebread 16 points17 points18 points  (1 child)
It just makes me feel bad since she clearly wants to be black for real and I think that is a testament to our changing society.
Jesus. Being black isn't a cool job you want, or a life-long dream you hope to accomplish. It's not a cool costume you want to put on and off at your leisure. But this woman has treated it as such. This woman obviously deceived all of the people around her. She lied about having a black father. She lied about being black, and got a full-ride college education at Howard. That's money that could have gone to an actual black student who experienced being black their whole lives because they were BORN black. She also potentially lied about being the target of several hate-crimes.
Honestly, I feel like people who sympathize with her do it because she is a poor 'ol white woman who didn't "mean anyone harm". There is also a disturbing suggestion when people go on and on about how much "good work" she's done..That her level of deception, and even possible psychological instability, are protected from questioning because of her whiteness.
The ability to put on blackface is a WHITE privilege.
Also, white people are used to colonizing, absorbing, and appropriating other people's cultures. So when absolutely surreal situations like this happen, they can't really understand how problematic it is.

There have been a ton of articles posted about it but the tl;dr would be that some white woman who was president of a chapter of the NAACP in Washington pretended to be black and her parents told because they were sick of her bs.
      [–]kaboutermeisje 13 points14 points15 points  (0 children)
I agree that trans-racial is bullshit created to attack trans people. Total bullshit. But at the same time, I think that race, like gender, should be looked at as a social construct. The alternative is biological essentialism and identity policing, which are very scary things, especially for folks who occupy the liminal spaces between those identities. I'm thinking here not so much about Dolezal as multiracial folks, trans folks, and others whose identities are routinely disrespected and denied.

Because she's not black. Her parents are white, if she's had kids with a white guy the kids will be white as well. Without the skin tan and all the hair styles trying to look black and hiring black people to pose as her family she's a white woman who obviously has some identity issues.

Yet you haven't given examples on how you can change your race. You gave the claim, back it up. I haven't done any surgery or wear bronzer to be a woman. I took hormones and lost muscle tone, got thick feminine hips, plump cheeks, boobs, and ass. I am all real and am able to accentuate and express how I feel on the inside. This woman puts on bronzer to try to be black but it really isn't who she is. Please tell me how you can be trans racial? The only example I can think of is like my grandmother, who had to pretend she was white in order to find work in the days of segregation.
