I feel like this doesn't really represent reality today

Yeah, I think the process is normally automated, but I think somebody had to step in just for today. And maybe tomorrow!

I have a feeling there's not much automation to it at all. Probably some staffer (or intern) who runs a SQL query to get the raw "trending" subs and then manually cherry-picks from the top of that list. You've only got to pick five per day, it's a pretty simple task. Today they had to dig a little further down the list to find some non-controversial choices but the basic process isn't any different from usual.

Right - porn subs never show up here. Maybe they run a rule to exclude all NSFW or something, but not even questionably controversial subs show up.

I imagine it's a nightly workflow that some admin personally does each day.

I think it's only subs that have themselves set as showing on /r/all, so not the NSFW ones

NSFW shows on /r/all. Users can choose to filter NSFW or not from all in their account settings. (think it's on by default).

TiA has been on there before at least once.

That's why there have been days where admins didn't put up trending subs.

    Man, I just realized.

I'd always been worried about losing sight on what past 'days of the internet' were like, but... Some small pockets of the internet - like the comment threads on /r/trendingsubreddits - are probably going to be our best meta-archives of the general zeitgeist of any given day.

    ...Awesome.

Hi, people of the future! Hopefully you got a lot of good data from today.

Or people don't like to be silenced.

People also don't like their personal information being posted on the internet out of retribution.

    Example?

The mods of /r/fatpeoplehate posting pictures of imgur staff in retribution for removing their subreddits posts. Literally the reason this is all happening.

Well fair enough. Not worthy of a ban and it is legal though. I want reddit to support anything legal.

Someone should analyze the timing, spacing & formatting of this versus other non-controversial days to look for this being manipulated.

I too don't believe this for a god damn second. Where is r/coontown? Place is SLAMMED right now.

The timing is all over the place for "normal" days. There have even been days where no trending subs were posted at all or they were posted more than once in a single day.

There's also the matter of the cut-off time for trending. It doesn't run from midnight to midnight. The cutoff seems to be early enough that it's entirely possible that the entire kerfuffle started after the cut-off point and some of the fallout could appear on the list tomorrow.

There's also the matter of nothing ever having been said to indicate that these are the "most" trending subs. People seem to think that but they have no reason too, especially considering the times that there have been multiple trends posted in the same day with the lists being entirely different. Even if /r/coontown is the most trending sub in the history of trending subs, that's no guarantee that it will make the list even without manually manipulation.

Which isn't to say that the list hasn't been manipulated. There's absolutely no doubt that the list is handled manually, considering one of the mods admitted to accidentally pushing the list through twice the first time /r/circlejerk trended, causing it to be knocked off the trending list. (They caused themselves to trend again the next day, however, without incident.)

This is all to say that it's possible that the list was manually edited to avoid any of the controversial subs. It's also entirely possible that the list is completely legit. The important thing is that it's not really a topic worthy of discussion, thus my 271 word comment about the matter.

CT is NSFW. Don't NSFW subreddits not get included?

Not all things will be included in the option (they don't have to). Plus all the other ones maybe trending tomorrow. Shit didn't hit the fan till the evening/next day.

You don't know the amiibo life...

    Struggles galore.

I think these subreddits are ones that experience a significant trend upward over time. The fatpeoplehate clones haven't been around long enough to establish norms to count as "rising" and I bet NSFW subs are manually excluded.

Not true, often trending subs are ones that were created less than 24 hours ago and became popular because they were made as part of a joke in a highly upvoted thread somewhere.

And for that, I say thank you.

This is an interesting list of subreddits that aren't trending today.

/r/PaoYongYang Definitely has to be trending.

We got nearly 90% of our subscribers in 1 day basically.

      Mod of /r/amiibo here

This is our second time trending, very exciting! We've put together a sticky with some helpful information for anyone who is a new visitor and ends up checking out the subreddit today.

      Cheers!

      /u/FlapSnapple

      Poor FlapSnapple. You tried.

      I did. :(

I feel like lots of folks in these comments aren't aware that what classifies as "trending" is determined by the number of subscribers gained the previous day, not overall activity. We just celebrated 1 year yesterday and hosted over a dozen giveaways, so we got lots of new subscribers.

determined by the number of subscribers gained the previous day, not overall activity.

Oh no, that's just it. If you follow the FPH news, the subreddits that pop'd up and then were banned not only had lots of activities, but large subscriber gains. /fatpeoplehate2-4 all had >30K subscribers when banned (more than /amiibo).

You just have a bad day to be trending =( You're probably going to get caught up in the downvote-anything-not-FPHrelated trend

/r/amiibo usually downvotes everything anyway, so it should just be a typical day at the office

you got the wrong day.... bummer

You know...one could call this consequence evasion.

One could call a lot of things a lot of things, if one were so inclined

Sure. I call it Frank, for instance.

Yeah that's right use a male name, don't reveal too much of your gender bias there I AM OFFENDED AND BAN THIS SUBREDDIT

I suppose, so long as one has a platform to say it.

One will always have a platform
So long as one doesn't piss off the ones who own the platform

Yeah I fail to believe these are actually based on trending subreddits when /r/all is a shitstorm of anti Ellen Pao and Anti Obesity.

      why would /r/relationships be trending

Can anyone recommend a subreddit for discussing my hatred of fat people? Not sure if there's one around...

      A therapist?

I heard there was one with good system against brigading and not supporting bullshit that haes is...

      Whatever happened to it...

      fph

      against brigading

I was subscribed there and not once did I see a post encouraging brigading. Yes, there was shitlording in other subs but we didn't hunt down submissions in other subs.

Yea, people need to learn the difference between tongue-in-cheek humour (like pcmasterrace, there are many screenshots of comments making fun of commenters) and direct brigading, ergo. here's the link, go downvote cuz we think it's bad (whole shitredditsays)

What about squirrels? We still have /r/fatsquirrelhate

      Nothing about Ellen Pao? huh

I don't get why they're trying to hide the shitstorm. It's kind of obvious

Because there's a whole lot of us who want to keep on using Reddit like normal.

      That's a great point actually

I'm pretty sure reddit would be normal had they not started acting like Russia.

I don't. This is great: reddit admins become afraid of censoring the site, and the hate communities get a brigading out of their system. It's a huge shitfight and I want both sides to lose.

My frontpage is pretty heavily customized and it took me a long time to find out anything was going on with this. I'm sure there's a lot of other people bouncing around with no idea what's going on. Of course, they're also the people that probably wouldn't get involved anyway, so it's kind of a wash.

      Wooh go amiibo

These aren't the real trending subs. lol

      Complete and utter horseshit.

The dozens of new subs on /r/all all with massive influx of subs would like word with you. Quit trying to pretend all is right.

This isn't the reality stop lying reddit. Every single one of those should be fatpeoplehateX through fatpeoplehateX

What I'm thinking right now about this debate is that things shouldn't continue like they were, because harassing. But closing the subreddit was not the right answer, it was motivated by the new policy of making reddit a safe-space for advertisers. I don't like FPH one bit, but banning their subreddit won't get rid of their ideas.
What I think should have happened is that the bad moderators should have been banned, but this would open a big can of worms for the admins, because so many subreddits don't like their moderators.
My take on this: the admins need to take action and get involved more directly into subreddit governance, avoiding the coarser tools that are leaving their fallout on the front page right now.

      Amiibo lol

Why are you lying to us?

To me this trend has been dead for centuries.
