To be fair, both parties were different back then.

In the minds of guilty Liberals, they were.

If you go back far enough, the two parties of the US weren't really "Liberal" vs "Conservative", but they were more aligned with "Federalist" vs "Anti-Federalist".

Relevant.

Undoubtedly any liberal reading that would say that it was a lie.

Well, the Republicans and Democrats have completely changed sides since then, just look at the voting base for each party. The Democrats used to control the South, with the Republicans controlling the North East and the West, that's completely changed.

Last time I checked, the republicans used to control the north, not the south. Look at the last 5 presidential elections, I never said it was some covert republican strategy, but it did happen.

Because of economics.

No, the Republicans then believed in values that would be considered democratic today. They wanted to make a federal university system, expand the federal railroad system, and protective tariffs.

Voters in the South shifted to the Repuican party for economic reasons.

If they did, it doesn't seem to have worked out for them.

How so?

The south is poor compared to most of the country.

How do you know it would not be worse had they continued to vote Democrat?

They shifted for both economic and social reasons, when schools were being de-segregated it was the Republican party in the deep South continuing the racism, with the support of many of its citizens. The racism shifted along with the economic beliefs of each party.
