      I think banning behavior can be done with better moderation. If they are going to institute new rules, more power to them I guess. It's their website and they have seemed open to changes in the past. But I'd like to see consistency or transparency in their application of those rules.

      There's a huge difference between linking a comment to another subteddit, and posting people's photos, names, other sites they're active on, etc. in order to mock and harass them.

      If you are posting, you can consider it public. I can hear your public convo and laugh at you and invite folks to participate. I can't & shouldn't track you down, make death of otherwise harmful threats and harass you. As soon as someone can prove SRS is encouraging its members to engage in harassing folk, it'll be banned. I'd wager the ones that did get banned had multiple complaints.

        By that logic /r/bestof should also be banned. When ever you're the bad guy in one of the threads you're going to have a bad time. Latest example I know of. People started harassing and downvoting the "bad guys". Some of them hadn't been on reddit for a while luckily, so it wasn't too bad. But people from many subs can get vicious.

        However bestof mods try to prevent such behavior or to limit it somehow. E.g. the thread that lead to that behavior I just mentioned got deleted.

        And the admins have repeatedly stated that SRS does not do as significant an amount of brigading as people want to believe. SRS has been more and more inactive and is basically just a boogie man now. They have done some vicious things in the past (or at least admitted to it), but don't really anymore.

        /r/bestof uses non-participation (np.reddit.com) links to discourage such behavior--it's their very first rule. You obviously can't prevent brigading entirely, but SRS uses regular links and shows the current vote count in the title, both of which arguably encourage brigading. Their second rule is "no brigading", but if they really wanted that they'd at least switch to np.* links like other meta subs do.

        The admin have stated multiple times that np-links are not endorsed by them and are almost ineffective.

        But one of them also said yesterday that they are planing to do something about it. And that he has done some work on another solution himself.

        Ah cool, thanks for the links. I'm guessing since it's a CSS hack it doesn't work on mobile apps? Which must be a huge, if not primary, source of traffic for reddit. I'm definitely interested to see what solution they come up with though, because even referrer links can be circumvented by just copy/pasting the url into a new tab, which is about the same amount of effort required to circumvent np links.

        • on big subs like /r/bestof people just disregard that it's an np-link

        It probably is going to rely on things like being subscribed to a sub or having commented there before without somehow being linked. Or maybe they're going to set up something to warn mods when a big amount of their users is going into other threads and voting in them. They actually already have the ability to see that.

          I have reported SRS for raiding my subreddits on multiple occasions. At the time I was a moderator of two different subs with over 100,000 members each. Both of them were brigaded by SRS on multiple occasions and the admins did nothing about it.

              What's the process of banning a subreddit? Is it based purely on number of reports, or is there actual research done to see if a sub is actively promoting brigading?

              It's fairly obvious that /r/fatpeoplehate was a controversial sub and there was plenty of hate for it that would garner a lot of reports. Being a fairly active subscriber, I never saw any brigading of other subs and the mods were good about shutting down links to other parts of Reddit. People that posted links to other sections of Reddit were actively removed or even banned.

              What's to stop a sub like SRS from having it's members mass report the sub and say that things like brigading aren't happening in order to get it banned? What's to stop people who disagree with the sub from creating an account, subscribing, and going into other subs trying to get it banned?

              My main question is: do you ban a subreddit based on subreddit behavior, or individual user behavior?

              It's impossible to control every single user of a sub, especially one where the members have such strong opinions. There should be nothing against a FPH subscriber going into another sub alone and voicing their opinions. Since there are a lot of FPH members, more than one of them might show up in any given thread. This doesn't constitute brigading; this is multiple individuals with similar ideals participating on an active web board.

              If you're going to ban subreddits and say it's due to the actions of the subreddit, I feel you should provide proof that these actions against the Reddit TOS are occuring.
