Yup, trade servers don't really have a purpose beyond just dicking around or maybe getting that one item sold if you're sick of having it up on outpost for a month. I decided it really wasn't worth my time to put up with all that shit, so I just stuck to trading sites and enjoyed playing the game for once. I don't think I know any serious traders who still go on trade servers anymore unless they're showing off or whatever.

I haven't been to a trade server in probably 2+ years, and I only visited them like 5 times in many years of playing, but trade servers always seemed to me to be both an inefficient, slow way of trading (compared to trading sites and automated services like scrap.tf, tf2wh or tidy.tf) and a bizzarre kind of this-isn't-really-TF2-at-all-anymore Twilight Zone where people just micspam, kids scream into a mic or hit walls with a bat for 5 minutes straight, people spew the same few voicelines or memes over and over and over... Or everyone's a Sniper staying in spawn, endlessly taking potshots at each other for hours across open maps that couldn't be more amateurishly made and not-TF2 in appearance, or DMing with no rhyme or reason for ages on rectangular maps with no objectives and no purpose.

Maybe in the early days of TF2 trading (post-Mannconomy update), when the economy hadn't really properly formed yet, the trading sites hadn't really existed yet, new weapons were constantly being added to the game, and players could trade items for items directly within the game (no Steam Overlay UI or trade email confirmations), these servers were actually used to trade items for items. Or maybe early unusual dealers could bargain for them personally in these places.

But with the advent of sites like Outpost, backpack.tf, scrap.tf and the like, finding hundreds of buyers and sellers instead of only the ~30 people on one trade server and without the need to constantly spam chat with what you're selling/buying (only to be drowned by others' chat spam), just became so much more elegant and efficient.

And I guess that then, trade servers just became places to ''chill out'' for people too bored of regular TF2 but unwilling to quit for some reason (even though the repetitive meme-spamming, Sniper-dueling and random DMing on maps not even designed for gameplay seems mind-numbingly dull to me) and places for a Minecraft-generation of kids to herp and derp.

I'm probably sounding really cynical, but I'm almost grateful that trade servers exist because they're havens for a lot of very bored or ''lolz, it's all about randum FUN'' people that would otherwise infest normal TF2 servers and make them even more full of awful teammates that don't take the game even remotely seriously and are detrimental to the experience of anyone that finds the core game fun and deserving of at least an ounce of effort.

What I say: Selling strange (Insert weapon here) for refined. Trade me! What they hear: SELLING LITERALLY EVERY HAT EVER FOR DIRT CHEAP

The main problem with trade servers is that they are full of traders. If you define yourself as a trader and not a player who trades, you are probably looking to increase your inventory value in some way (better items, more items, easier to trade items, etc). So, if your goal is to come out ahead on a trade, its incredibly hard to do on a server only populated with people looking to come out ahead on their trades as well.

The best deals are done by seeking out and selling items to people who want that particular item. Those people can sometimes be found on trade servers however, but your time is much better spent by being a proactive seller.

I usually stick to unusual trade servers. Firepowered, the Vatican City and ppm servers are good to chill in and trade at the same time. If you really want to trade, just use bp.tf and tf2outpost.

Trade servers are an old concept, for when there was only so many items in TF2.

And if you're on the trading sites like outpost or bazaar.tf you get ridiculously low balled

Bots are the way forward.

Embrace it. It's way more convenient, more reliable and less stressful to use automate bots instead of waiting for some dude to come online and check his trade offers (especially if they're in a different timezone).

I mean...it's been awhile and I do agree with a lot of what you said but I've always been able to make trades on those servers. Often I can sell something fast that might take a day or two on tf2outpost to sell.

what i do is just say "Selling and buying stranges!" or something like that, so if theyre selling they come to you (even if you arent buying stranges) and some kids will want to know what stranges youre selling. (so, lie and dont be specific)
