The ar15 is by far the most customizable gun on the market. Modular and designed in two parts you can literally change out every single piece until you're comfortable and shooting accurate. Low recoil and high accuracy means almost anyone can use it. It also uses the most common rifle ammunition in America 5.56/.223. With a standard capacity of 30 rounds and a variety of ammunition types available the ar15 is almost unmatched for combat and survival.

The AKM(or ak47 as many call it) is the competitor of the ar15 and both have a 30 round standard capacity. More recoil and a larger round(7.62x39mm). It also suffers some accuracy and is far less customizable. But there is an upside. The AKM is the most durable rifle on the planet. Known to work filled with mud, water, grass, sand, gravel, and even ice cream. When looking for a long term weapon that will last longer than you with little maintenance the AK is top choice. But keep in mind 7.62x39mm is less common than 5.56/.223 and is less accurate.

The Ruger 10/22 is an excellent choice for non-combatant survival. The formerly common and inexpensive .22lr is perfect for hunting and is far quieter than and Ar15 or an AKM. However .22lr is a poor choice for open combat(it would be decent in stealth). The 10/22 has a standard magazine capacity of 10 rounds but 25 round magazines are very common. When most people talk about the 10/22 for survival they don't intend to use it in self defense but with the lightweight .22lr you could carry thousands of rounds.

That's pretty clear cut, thanks.

I have a related question: If you play (New Vegas at least) on PC there's a mod called weapons of the new millennium, which adds a lot of more modern guns that don't fit into the FO timeline. I'm wondering, if you've got a chance to try that before, how you think the AK compares to the ar15 in the game/mod versus real life?

Granted of course that FO doesn't really have much of a recoil feature and is compensated (sort of) with spread on guns like that.

I play on 360 so no mods but I tested all the ar variants in the game.

First off this site is very useful when discussing movie and videogame guns.

Alright first we have the Marksman Carbine. The recoil was spot on. The accuracy was realistic. It doesn't really fit with the rest of the guns because of all the modern technology on it. The tac rails, the ACOG optic, the precision stock. Another thing to note the charging handle is on the side of the upper receiver as opposed to above it and the magazine is way to radically curved.

Next we have the Assault Carbine. As far as I can tell it's very realistic but a bit too modern to fit with the 1950s-60s theme. The recoil again is realistic and so is the accuracy. The standard capacity looks normal but with the extended magazine it's still to radically curved. And again it's a side charger.

Finally we have the Service Rifle this one might be the least realistic. For a military rifle it's oddly semiautomatic(perhaps to help conserve ammo?). It has wood furniture as opposed to the typical synthetic furniture(perhaps this was done to help with mass production?). The recoil is too strong, more like a .308. Again a sidecharger. However with the magazine capacity and the original design and implementation date this firearm fits into the Fallout timeline much better than the others.

I hope all this helps. Now that you got me to play Fallout New Vegas for the first time in months I'm addicted again.
