Ok that's seriously adorable.

Man, I gotta stop eating meat. It's reaching the point where I can't defend it anymore without having to admit what a huge hypocrite I am.

I'm going through the same thing right now. I've wanted to for a while, but vegetables fall into the "only eat if absolutely necessary" category for me.

As it turns out, there's a lot of vegetarian and vegan fake meats that are actually delicious, and I say that as someone who thinks tofu is gross. Trader Joe's fake chicken tenders and mandarin orange nuggets are good by real chicken nugget standards. Their fake ground beef with taco seasoning makes for tacos that taste exactly like 90% lean beef to me. Beyond Chicken strips when sautéed properly aren't quite the same as real chicken, but are actually really great (just difficult to cook and season properly at first). A lot of vegetarian sausages, both breakfast patties and Italian sausages, are great and taste like the real deal.

For a little while now I've been down to eating meat on average only every other day, so I've cut my meat consumption in half. This month I've only had meat once. I'm not sure if I'll ever be able to go fully vegetarian, but I have been able to significantly cut down on my meat consumption and that's a step in the right direction.

You work for Trader Joe's don't you?

It's a good choice for environmental, health and ethical reasons. I can imagine its quite daunting to cut out meats/animal products if you are used to it but there are some great alternatives available these days and lots of information on the web. :)

[–]PM_ME_YOUR_WOES_GIRL 2ポイント3ポイント  (1子コメント)

I know. Literally my whole close family is vegan or vegetarian. I just can't seem to do it, even though I want to. I have vegetarian months from time to time though, so it's a start.

[–]justin_timeforcake 0ポイント1ポイント  (0子コメント)

You can do it. Drop by /r/vegan if you need some support and encouragement.

[–]Zhaey 0

Yep! If anyone else is interested, ChooseVeg.com is a great place to get advice (and recipes)!

What is to defend? Our ancestors for many years have ate both meat and vegetation. There is no defending the mass growth industry that meat farms have become in the world, especially the U.S., but that doesn't make it wrong to eat meat. As with everything, moderation.

Or if you want to avoid the meat farms get a hunting licence and hunt some deer, I hear Venison is good.

well not everything is ok in moderation. If you are against eating meat for ethical issues involving animal suffering and animal rights then moderation is irrelevant.

[–]PM_ME_YOUR_WOES_GIRL 2ポイント3ポイント  (0子コメント)

It's not eating meat per se, but the fucked up industry I'm supporting by doing it (as you said). There is no wildlife where I live and looking for "good" meat is really hard and expensive so I just eat the regular stuff. That's what I find hard to defend for myself.

Can't go wrong emulating the behaviors of our ancestors. /sarcasm

Where did I say behaviours? I said biologically we have been eating meat for as long as we know and it is what our bodies have been designed to do.

[–]Zhaey 8

Our bodies have been "designed" to be able to survive both on plant-based or combined diets. Humans can be perfectly healthy on diets that exclude animal products.

American Dietetic Association

It is the position of the American Dietetic Association that appropriately planned vegetarian diets, including total vegetarian or vegan diets, are healthful, nutritionally adequate, and may provide health benefits in the prevention and treatment of certain diseases. Well-planned vegetarian diets are appropriate for individuals during all stages of the life cycle, including pregnancy, lactation, infancy, childhood, and adolescence, and for athletes.

Dietitians of Canada

A well planned vegan diet can meet all of these needs. It is safe and healthy for pregnant and breastfeeding women, babies, children, teens and seniors.

The British National Health Service

With good planning and an understanding of what makes up a healthy, balanced vegan diet, you can get all the nutrients your body needs.

The British Nutrition Foundation

A well-planned, balanced vegetarian or vegan diet can be nutritionally adequate ... Studies of UK vegetarian and vegan children have revealed that their growth and development are within the normal range.

The Dietitians Association of Australia

Vegan diets are a type of vegetarian diet, where only plant-based foods are eaten. They differ to other vegetarian diets in that no animal products are usually consumed or used. Despite these restrictions, with good planning it is still possible to obtain all the nutrients required for good health on a vegan diet.

The United States Department of Agriculture

Vegetarian diets (see context) can meet all the recommendations for nutrients. The key is to consume a variety of foods and the right amount of foods to meet your calorie needs. Follow the food group recommendations for your age, sex, and activity level to get the right amount of food and the variety of foods needed for nutrient adequacy. Nutrients that vegetarians may need to focus on include protein, iron, calcium, zinc, and vitamin B12.

The National Health and Medical Research Council

Alternatives to animal foods include nuts, seeds, legumes, beans and tofu. For all Australians, these foods increase dietary variety and can provide a valuable, affordable source of protein and other nutrients found in meats. These foods are also particularly important for those who follow vegetarian or vegan dietary patterns. Australians following a vegetarian diet can still meet nutrient requirements if energy needs are met and the appropriate number and variety of serves from the Five Food Groups are eaten throughout the day. For those eating a vegan diet, supplementation of B12 is recommended.

The Mayo Clinic

A well-planned vegetarian diet (see context) can meet the needs of people of all ages, including children, teenagers, and pregnant or breast-feeding women. The key is to be aware of your nutritional needs so that you plan a diet that meets them.

The Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada

Vegetarian diets (see context) can provide all the nutrients you need at any age, as well as some additional health benefits.

The key word in many of those short blurbs you linked is 'can'.

What I love though is I am getting all these people angry because I said it was alright to eat meat. I didn't shit on vegetarians, and I didn't say it was bad, I just said it was alright to eat meat.

I agree with you. I actual want to get into raising some of my own animals. I know they would be treated better that way. I respect the animals I eat. I don't eat meat every single day or anything. I see something wrong with how they are treated in commercial practices, not so much wrong with eating meat itself.

If I were to agree that meat is 'wrong', I definitely don't think eggs are.

I think the biggest problem for the idea of meat is many people don't understand it is like everything else and should be eaten in moderation. Meat is the focus of a traditional home cooked meal but at the same time it shouldn't be the biggest thing on the plate.

I do agree that the meat industry treats their animals in poor conditions though, and I do think that it should be changed.

The way I was brought up is you have your meat, say a steak, then you'll have 1-2 veggies.

Well, the way you were brought up is shit.

What kind of savage eats meat?

Don't worry, just eat like human being, not like a grass fed sheep

Our ancestors didnt have the same type of health information as we do now. However avoiding farms and hunting for yourselves is something i can agree with even though I dont think we need, need to eat meat.

"Stealing is okay because our ancestors stole."

I just don't see how someone in the past did something would be in any case an argument for anything, ancestor or no ancestor.

    physiology vs psychology.

    physiology

Are you implying that we need to eat animal meats? Or am I misunderstanding you because that's certainly not true demonstrated by the fact that vegetarians of various kinds exist.

Yeah same here, I am considering going in steps, pescaterian, vegetarian and then perhaps vegan entirely.

    [–]Hilarious_Haplogroup 2ポイント3ポイント  (1子コメント)

Humans are omnivorous. Just because animals are cute in one context doesn't mean that they aren't tasty in a different context.

    [–]PM_ME_YOUR_WOES_GIRL -1ポイント0ポイント  (0子コメント)

If they weren't tasty I wouldn't eat them. It's just my personal opinion that I wanna stop. Others can eat all the meat they want.

It's surprisingly easy! For years I said I could never give up meat. Then one day I just had enough of the cruelty and hypocrisy. I haven't had meat in over 7 years and been animal product free for over 2. I've never looked back :)

How does this make you a hypocrite? Just curious.

It doesn't. He's a vegetarian (with varying degrees of success apparently) who is trying to guilt-trip others into following his set of beliefs.

This is what I gathered but didn't want to immediately come out and say. Fear of down votes I suppose? But ya it really isn't hypocritical to eat meat. Hypocrisy would be him claiming to be a vegetarian but then eat meat when nobody is around to see.

On a side note, after typing that I just came to a huge realization. I have a not very close friend who always preaches about being vegetarian and how everyone is a bad person for eating meat blah blah. But I've caught him eating things like hot dogs and chicken fingers when he thought nobody else was in the house. He'll blow it off and say oh they were going to expire, they aren't mine and its better for me to eat them than to not. But it was pretty obvious that he was secretly enjoying the shit out of it and didn't want anyone to see.

    [–]PM_ME_YOUR_WOES_GIRL 1ポイント2ポイント  (2子コメント)

How am I guilt tripping anyone? I'm not a vegetarian. I eat meat every day (way too much of it) but I would like to stop.

    Your other comments:

I know. Literally my whole close family is vegan or vegetarian. I just can't seem to do it, even though I want to. I have vegetarian months from time to time though, so it's a start.

and even now you say you would like to stop. You're preaching it. You're a hopeful vegetarian. It's a perfectly valid choice but "insulting yourself" for being something (without even addressing the overdebated subject) is quite an obvious attempt to direct it at others as well.

btw, this sub will probably help you achieve what you want: http://www.reddit.com/r/vegetarian

    [–]PM_ME_YOUR_WOES_GIRL -1ポイント0ポイント  (0子コメント)

I'm talking about myself and my own views. I'm not posting any links, videos or articles and don't even claim to know which life choice is more optimal. It's just my own believe that I'm a hypocrite for loving animals, hating most of the meat producing industry and still eating meat. How is that fucking preaching?

You're not revealing any vegatarian proganada here. I'm just a guy talking about himself on the internet.

I am genuinely curious why pictures like this have that affect on you?

Meat comes from animals who happen to be cute when they are small and can make a nice companion if you want to. People eat dogs, people keep dogs as pets, its just a choice. I have the same confusion whenever there is a video of butchering and people are grossed out, it seems like lots of people don't consider where meat comes from.

I don't mind eating meat since I can butcher a animal and I can endure that gore/sight. I think any human should be able to, else they shouldn't be eating meat in the first place.

That said, I don't eat it a lot.

Health reasons, environment reasons, there's a lot of reasons not to eat meat. Especially if you're in pretty much any part except western/northern europe since animal-rights are pretty abysmal in most of the entire world.

I mean we in scandinavia have the tightest rules in the world and even here there always surface horrid examples of animal abuse anyway.

My mother grew up on a farm, she and her father loved their animals and mourned when they had to be slaughtered. But that's how they survived winter, without pigs-fat etc. they'd never endure the northern cold. She used to tell me how their last animals, a pig and a cow, became best friends and hung out always. The pig dug itself out of its pen 3 times and hid with the cow so they gave up and let them hang out together.

    [–]PM_ME_YOUR_WOES_GIRL 0ポイント1ポイント  (0子コメント)

If I had my own animals to butcher I wouldn't have a problem either. Hell, if someone else did it for me it wouldn't bother me. Knowing that the animal was healthy and lived a natural life would be enough.

It's just hard to come by that kinda meat so I eat the shitty stuff.

You literally post things all day on multiple subreddits to try and turn people into vegans. It just seems a little disingenuous to me because you know exactly the discussions you will create instead of just posting it because its cute.

how can you accuse someone of posting too much aww worthy things on aww

if he goes to subs he shouldn't to promote an agenda with off topic stuff, then call him out

I guess you didn't understand what I'm trying to say. Every time a cute "farm animal" is posted on aww its a vegan posting who wants to spur a comment like the top comment in this thread. I'm perfectly fine with people posting cute pigs and things its just I feel like he isn't doing it because its cute, he knows how people will reply.

Why is that bad? People being exposed to cute animals may lose their desire to eat them. So we should stop showing people cute animals?

If he came in and listed off a bunch of stuff about veganism to try and force people's opinions then that would be out of line
