This is ridiculously cool, and also really funny in a surreal way.

Get ready for a Scottish soft drink ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

I feel a new meme coming on...

How were the comment subreddits to bot selected?

How do you feel about using comments from subreddits that have opted out of /r/all or are otherwise more restricted (but not private)?

Thoughts on hiding the usernames of the bots and revealing what subreddit they're from on mouse-hover?

How were the comment subreddits to bot selected?

Nothing very specific, mostly just popular subreddits or a few that I thought would generate interesting/funny results. I'll probably cut some of them if their comments aren't very good. Some are also ones that I'd like to get posting submissions more than comments, like I think random TILs or TIFUs could be entertaining. So far I haven't got the capability for other accounts to post the submission instead though.

I'm not sure exactly what you're asking, but I don't think using them should really be an issue. Pretty much all of the subreddits I've got set up so far are all massively-popular and well-known.

Thoughts on hiding the usernames of the bots and revealing what subreddit they're from on mouse-hover?

Hmm, that could be interesting to do. I think I'd probably be able to tell for most of them right now though, most seem to be pretty distinctive.

You can see what the content is from by looking at the comments page and then clicking "other discussions."

[–]Deimorz[S] 3ポイント4ポイント  (0子コメント)

Yeah, I'm actually looking forward to people wandering in here confused through "other discussions" on the actual original submission.

You know, come to think of it, it would be really handy if, upon subreddit creation, you could toggle "test mode" which would seed your subreddit with example posts like these and display an "under construction" page to visitors. This would allow mods to fiddle with the css and themes before going live. Most of us already use throwaway subs for this, this would make that easier. Even an "under construction" banner option across the top of a live sub would be handy.

I hand-rolled a markov generator in my time there, if I'd known it would be used for such fun as this I'd have gotten in on this action much sooner :)

Still somewhat tempted to make an all-reddit or per-subreddit version of www.itcamefromwritingprompts.com though, even though that's essentially what you're doing now.

[–]Deimorz[S] 2ポイント3ポイント  (0子コメント)

Oh, hello there. Yeah, I'd definitely like to get some of the bots making submissions as well, submitting writingprompts and TILs and ELI5s and such would probably all be pretty funny.

On that note, I should add a writingprompts one right now.

There should be one for showerthoughts too, since that's a big discussion sub.

Any chance you could add comments from GoneWild? I imagine the results (while far from safe for work) would be hilarious.

Haha, this is both awesome and weird at the same time. I love it. Still reading through some of these.

Might want to check double punctuation. :P (as well as making sure ">" doesn't get translated to its HTML entity)

Yeah, there's definitely some issues with "internet text stuff" still (probably including subreddit names and user mentions) that I'll have to take a look at.

[–]Psandysdad 1ポイント2ポイント  (1子コメント)

As far as I know, which isn't very far, there are quite a few weird bots on Reddit that can be invoked. Some do weird stuff, some are helpful.

Is there a list? Any info on why they exist? I'll check back this thread later, tomorrow, whenever. I'd like to learn more and it might be interesting to interact with a bot with decent AI.

[–]Deimorz[S] 2ポイント3ポイント  (0子コメント)

I don't think there's really any "master list" of reddit bots or anything. There's definitely a lot of them with different purposes. Some respond to comments anywhere on the site, some are for very specific tasks inside single subreddits, etc.

I don't think there's really any to have a conversation with though, not ones that would do a decent job of responding.

I think we should keep track of the bots' karma, as a way of "keeping score". I think that it may add an interesting meta-game to this. This is fantastic work, by the way, absolutely hilarious and genuinely brilliant, I already have favorite "characters"

[–]Deimorz[S] 1ポイント2ポイント  (0子コメント)

I was thinking about having a "leaderboard" in the sidebar or something that gets auto-updated with their current karma. It'll really depend if people keep visiting and voting though, I'm not sure if everyone's going to get bored of this after a couple of days.

Can I get a simple explanation on what is going on? Not quite ELI5, but kind of an ELI15 about how these text sequences are generated. I've heard "Markov chains" but have no idea what those are. Am visiting Wikipedia in a moment though.

It only makes sense for the subreddit to be moderated by a not named /u/dEIMORZ_SS.

Maybe just automoderator with a custom name.
