It's pretty interesting watching people who supposedly had a lot of skepticism of World of Warcraft. And at the same time have no knowledge of how the game works.

It is also extremely neat to see how they really wanted to explore and just do the little things. Like waving and experiencing the little treats of the world. This also shows why some changes to WoW tried to grab folks like the Grump Team. Who have no concept of MMOs that veterans take for granted.

Man, I'm actually pretty jealous of them. I loved that feeling of naivety when I first visit MMOs. Now I have a mindset of "Go to each quest hub and get max level and get gears."

that's the thing: when the game first started it's an adventure. now Ross expresses the key to blizzard's current mindset "control". It's all about controlled directed experiences in an 'open world' and that was never what made the game popular in the first place. The series would probably be more interesting just letting them explore rather than make them level since leveling is literally the worst part of the game. It also doesn't help that they don't seem to have gone through the tutorials since ross made the characters

just so many things wrong with trying to get people into an mmo. For someone who enjoys endgame content, it's not possible to force that onto new players

Arin didn't break the game, nor was it a bug. Archmage Khadgar said to Arin's character: "Please don't wander off too far. We need you here, champion." By going where he wasn't supposed to go, it took him back to the starting area, meaning he would have to do it over again. He never technically found Khadgar on the bridge. Onscreen dialog explanation appears at 24:57.

If you like fantasy stuff, you're in for something awesome. I definitely recommend you to play Warcraft III (the RTS game) and read some wikis and books. The lore is wonderfully fleshed out and massive, even though sometimes there are inconsistencies.

EDIT: As someone who plays WoW regularly...I understand Ross's pain. They're very dedicated to screwing around.

EDIT: Also, they're gonna have a bitch of a time actually playing their characters. Normally, you don't start out with two full bars worth of buttons to press after a 90 boost, you start out with one or two and get the others as you complete quests in the starting zone.

I'd guess that the setup for Guild Grumps (or something - they might've boosted before 6.0 released and Ross just moved them from the Timeless Isle to the gates of Stormwind) meant that this didn't happen.

Not to defend arin too much, but I get his points about mmos. Theres a point when the players skills is at its limit and you're just grinding levels. Instead of finding strategy's and trying to beat the game you're just doing chores and completing tasks.

I'm just saying MMOs are hard to get into to what with all the skills and HUD covering the skill it looks dangerous like a spreadsheet.

MMO's tend to have a sharp yet short learning curve that levels off quickly, and after that you don't really gain any added skill beyond memorizing the hundreds of skills and items that may be strategically advantageous towards a specific quest.

MMO's are constantly being patched and changed, because of this there will always be new things to learn. With WoW the classes are constantly changing and they require insane amounts of math and minmaxing in order to perfect. There is always room to increase skill because the skills you need to progress are always changing.

Have you even played GW2? GW2 doesn't have an "endgame", and an expansion is coming soon with a Guilds vs Guilds mode. It requires strategy with the Marks and TS for communication during WvW.

And TERA has a lot of endgame content and optional bosses in dungeons, which is just as WoW does and other generic MMO but at LEAST those are HARDER and more REWARDING, and more "Real time".

Yes, I get defensive for both of those games because I got to the endgame on both and are way fun than most of MMOs nowadays.

Absolutely phenomenal. I loved this so much. Way to fucking go Ross and the rest of the grumps, this is awesome.

I loved how everyone reacted a lot differently than I assumed! I figured Barry for the sassy guy and Arin for the rage monster but it was Ross raging, Arin being sassy, Barry being interested but confused, and Dan being the indifferent one... I think maybe because Dan has experience from his morrowind days so it's not as alien to him as the others

and Suzy was a funny and cute, like always haha

The way the starting zones are designed, so comepletely brand new players who have never played WoW before, can jump right in and do everything. Beta-testing demands that completely newbie people try the game, and tell Blizzard devs about bugs and options. And everybody who plays in beta will follow directions to the letter, because hey, the game is holding their hand and guiding them through all the things that make the game fun. Arin must have some sort of mental block, because he legit broke the game within an hour, in the fucking starting zone. JESUS.

At first I was like, "Holy shit, Ross spent a small fortune on the spectral tiger and shop mounts." But I think what he did was set up a bunch of alternate accounts and link them to one bnet account. Anything bought on one account is shared across all of them. So technically he only bought them once. Still...that's a lot of money since each shop mount is $25. Also RIP $700 Spectral Tiger Mount that can't be acquired anymore since the TCG died. (I admit, as a regular WoW player it kinda stings. But oh well! Live and let live.)

That said, the production values for the series are great. I'm looking forward to more. Barry is really shining already, and part of me is suspicious that he's played MMOs before...

Good job to Ross for thinking this up. And much thanks to the grumps for at least giving my favorite hobby game a shot. I'll be tuning in all week to laugh and probably cry a few times.

It's different strokes for different folks, man. WoW intentionally keeps its graphics stylized and cartoony though the quality has been upped significantly this expansion. It's because Blizzard designs games so that people who play on not-exactly-prime computers can still play and have a decent experience.

And the gameplay isn't for everyone, but the same kind of thing can be said for playing a game like final fantasy where your main input is through a menu system.

Downvote me to hell, but fuck Arin in this episode. Not for breaking the game, he didn't know, but his attitude pisses me off. Everyone else is bored but they're at least trying to do the quest. I'll admit it was funny when everyone was dancing, flying, and sitting. But at least everyone got back on track. Arin just said fuck it and ran off. It's funny to see everyone struggle to play, but it's irritating seeing Arin not even try to play and then say the game's broken. Also the way he reacted to the $700 thing was totally dickish. Even if it was a joke. It's fine for everyone to not pick the thing, but for him to basically say "why the fuck did you do that" is mean. I thought it was hilarious for Ross to do that, knowing they wouldn't pick it, but Arin getting pissed at how Ross spends money on his own project was bullshit. As a person who has tried to get people to play board games and other complicated games, the worst person at the table is the one who doesn't even try. The episode on the whole was hilarious though. I'm super stoked for the rest of the series.

You forget the fact that it was $700 dollars out of the money that Arin gave to Ross for the project. Yes, Ross payed the difference with his own money but he didn't tell him that so it doesn't matter for the case in question.

Considering all of the money spent on this project (at least $5-6000), to suddenly be told that that money was spent on something was completely unnecessary I think Arin handled it pretty well. He didn't flip out, he was simply annoyed. Yeah, it's a cool little bonus for the Grumps but it was unnecessary, and could have gone to something more beneficial for the series (like Arin said, he could have bought mics).

Long story short, Ross was given money by Arin and he spent it frivolously. Arin was reasonably annoyed, but dropped it after a couple of minutes of jabs at Ross' wastefulness. Arin's reaction was not only within reason, but it also was mature.
