Context is a lovely thing. Notice how when people talk about things being actual traps - ie a device or situation that leads to unexpected negative outcomes - they're not getting banned? It is clear from context that I am talking about a critter from the Alouatta genus, not making shitty racist jokes.

Busy keeping my subreddit clean of the new influx of bullshit

Short version though is that America has an awful stigma against psychological counseling in general and it's extremely messed up. People who need help need help and it's tough enough to say "yes I need this help" and 'let someone in' to help you without having society screaming from the rooftops that you're broken.

That said, if you must be jerks to each other, in general, be jerks over choices that are actually relevant to Planetside. Not gonna dive into the idea of fatness being a choice or not, because it's immaterial to the discussion - whether or not it's a choice doesn't change the fact that if it is a choice, it is not a choice that is relevant to Planetside.

My generic rule of thumb on things is that if it's something that I could reasonably imagine a murderously violent bigot screaming while beating someone to death for the 'crime' of being who they are, then it's probably not a word that should be permitted in decent company.

In as much as I've thought of it, it doesn't cover any every day words it obviously ought not to, and it covers all the slurs I've thought of. Passing both the false negative and false positive tests makes it a decent rule in my book.

Yeah, we actually had someone write something okay. I unbanned them, explained where I thought they missed the mark a little (it was like A for effort, B+ for content), and they wrote some pretty detailed ponderings on the matter after being unbanned and really seemed to get it and grow as a person. Makes me all warm and fuzzy inside.

Of course, I also have a message sitting in my inbox about how I'm awful and have no sense of humor, but that's what popcorn is for :P

Calling trans people traps is gross and awful. Trans suicide attempt rates in America are a bit over 40% - ie nearly half of all trans people in America, at some point in their life, attempt to kill themselves.

Transphobia and the overwhelmingly hostile society that trans people face every day of their lives plays a huge factor in this. Treating trans people as a subject of ridicule and mockery is not okay and contributes to the crushing isolation many of them face, which itself contributes to feelings of hopelessness, despair, and suicidal or self-harming thought patterns.

I understood perfectly, and treating trans people or cross-dressers or anyone else who doesn't conform to "normal" gender standards as a subject of mockery and ridicule is gross and cruel. LGBT people face a horrible amount of violence every day, and treating them as the butt of a joke contributes to it, because it helps dehumanize them.

CrestfallenWarrior has ample opportunity to get unbanned, I've even since relaxed the unbanning requirements to "have a productive conversation with me on the topic of transphobia." And, frankly, as a huge Dark Souls fanboy (I've cleared the entire game at least four or five times, including a Soul Level 1 pyromancer run), banning him for that joke made me hurt inside because of how much I love that game. But transphobia is a vicious, nasty piece of work that I refuse to allow to gain any kind of foothold in this subreddit if I can help it.

I am a believer in reformative justice, not punitive justice, and I would much rather see someone do the research, learn a little bit, grow as a person, and get unbanned. You are welcome to disagree with my methods, but the alternative would be to just ban people with no real chance to appeal it.

I vastly enjoy the reactions when 12 year olds with no perspective decide I am THE WORST PERSON EVER for giving them a task that will take an hour or two, tops, but it's also an attempt to try to reform and educate people. Honestly, my favorite bans are the ones I overturn because people, at least as far as I can tell, reform and become better people for it.

No sweat! Sometimes something good even comes of it! As part of the bannings today I was assigning 500 word essays to ban appealers to research transphobia in American society and its impact on lifetime suicide rates among trans Americans (the statistics are, well, staggering and horrifying D:), in an effort to drive home how very goddamned unfunny it is when someone posts "lol trap" or "omg it's a guy" and why I want to scream at them for it, and actually had someone take it fairly seriously and talk it out with us and give a pretty heartfelt apology. I'm hoping it sticks and the internet becomes a slightly better place for it :)

Of course then there's also the one who has spent the entire team spamming mod mail, in all caps, about how I'm a monster for banning them and how they don't have time to write an essay, so you can't win them all. But you can at least break out the industrial grade popcorn :P I think even my notoriously endless thirst for tears may be slaked.
