A lot of the vets in smaller towns (US) do if the VFW is representing in any capacity. Sometimes you see them just wearing them out and about. I think it's neat.

It's the unquestioning nature that they are congratulating him with. I think as a citizen we should be cynical and weary of both our government and military.
Relating this man, and the things he did 70 years ago with current or recent military events and government isn't really fair though. This guy (Never mind the fact that he's that old, mobile, and coherent) should be treated with some respect.
Especially if he really is a WW2 vet. You can't really compare the politics of that war with the current wars because WW2 was actually a war where the fate of the world legitimately did hang in the balance. The politics since then are certainly open to questions, but I have no doubt in my mind that WW2 was a war that needed to be fought.

I think people are downvoting his cynicism. Its also hard not to assume that he's not just catering to reddit's super-edgy-military-hating hivemind. Not saying its ok (I know thats not what downvotes are for) but I understand it.

As a vet I couldn't agree more with that statement. Everyone assumes I'm a "hero" or that I've done some great service to this country. I don't think I am or have done so at all.
I am not appreciative of your service because I believe you are a hero. I am appreciative because it is a job that needs to be done and I am not willing to do. I respect you in the same way I respect police officers, fire fighters, and hell, even janitors. You are providing a service (depending on what you did, a dangerous one) and I want to acknowledge that. I do not believe there is anything wrong with thanking someone for doing something that benefits me, and I am not willing to do
I know I am super late but whatever lol
Well there's nothing wrong with that. I just can't get on board with hero worship. To me heroes are every day folks that do something out of the ordinary. Like a office worker jumping into a lake to save a drowning child. That's a hero: Going above and beyond.
Me.. Hell, I signed up for this. I made a mental and physical commitment to it. It's my job.
I do appreciate the thank yous. But when I go to the parade and it's hero this, hero that, I get squeamish.

Hi, I know it's a month later and everything, I just wanted to express some sort of solidarity with you here since you were getting weirdly downvoted. It worries me that not being massively pro-military seems to be taboo so it's nice to see someone legitimately thinking for themselves and not crumbling to pressure.
I don't think it's pro military. I doubt they sit back at 70 years of age and look back at the battlefield and the military at the ripe age of 18 as a fun experience in the same since of a basketball or football game. They probably wear the uniform to honor their fallen comrades and to show the pride they have as ones who have not only survived such a trying time in their lives but the readjustment back into society.

Actually Germans and Japanese people are still quite proud (edit: if everyone's going to get pissy about this word, sympathetic instead) of their ww2 veterans, despite what they were fighting for many were forced into it just like on the allied side, keep in mind. There's a difference between agreeing with the ideologies that went with the war, and sympathizing with boys who were drafted into it and forced to fight.

Clearly not what I was saying. There's a difference between agreeing with the ideologies that went with the war, and sympathizing with boys who were drafted into it and forced to fight. Not every WW2 vet on their side is figuratively hitler.
Actually Germans ... are still quite proud of their ww2 veterans
This is an offensive thing to say about Germans. You clearly weren't aware of the implications, so listen.
I as a German am not proud of what "my" WWII veterans did. I am ashamed to read that people of other nations think of me like that.
In Germany, only Neo-Nazi groups or right-wing extremists openly show pride in what war criminals did. Praising the work of regular soldiers is only a step away from that, so to distance myself clearly, I refuse to do so. Neo-Nazis are an abomination of our country. They're the last political group I want to see myself associated with.
There's a difference between agreeing with the ideologies that went with the war, and sympathizing with boys who were drafted into it and forced to fight.
Both of my grandfathers were among the boys who were drafted into WWII. They were 16 and 19. They'd be devastated to hear me stating to be "proud" of what they did. When they told me about their war experiences they weren't proud at all. They expressed compunction and regret. They deserve sorrow and commiseration for what they were forced to do and for their fallen comrades. I have lots of sympathy for them and all those other Germans, who were forced to fight a futile war they didn't want.
Tl;dr: There's a difference between being proud and being sorry.
Continue misinterpreting to bolster your own argument all you want, what I was saying was easily understandable to anyone who wanted to understand. Sympathetic, rather than proud then, but you already knew I meant that.
dude, Bonig's not misinterpreting anything. literally your first sentence, "Actually Germans and Japanese people are still quite proud of their ww2 veterans." you meant what you said. if you're going to lie, you should at least change your previous comments.
Sympathetic, rather than proud then
I already said I used the wrong word, I'm not "lying" about it unless you have the same reading comprehension as the other guy, but my point was clearly to differentiate between supporting an ideology and blaming people who were forced into it, and that was clear to anyone not deliberately trying to misinterpret.
your ad hominem attacks will get you nowhere, my friend. no one is misinterpreting anything. your said proud, and we took that as proud. you've admitted that you misspoke. don't ruin it by trying to defend that misstatement.

Nor you, pal. I admitted I used the wrong word and clarified, and he kept rambling on after that. Not sure what you're on about either then. We're all in agreement that I used the wrong word, but he kept on going on with the misinterpretation after I corrected myself.
This conversation can serve no further purpose than to fan the flames, as we all now know what I meant.

You should also know that a lot of the soldiers in the Vietnam War were drafted, meaning that they had no say in going to war or not.
As others have said below, this is a WWII vet who did help defend our nation as well as several others. It's still a legitimate question for someone from outside the US who may it as soldier worship. (I'm not saying you do, but it's pretty prevalent on Reddit). The following is what I have observed. You experience may differ. Shaking a soldiers hand doesn't necessarily mean that you are thanking them for specific actions or that you agree with the conflict of the time. The meaning seems to differ depending on when the soldier served. WWII is pretty obvious. Axis=bad, Allies=good. Vietnam vets seems to be more of a "Thanks for doing a shit job even though you probably didn't have a choice and people hated you for it." The Iraq/Afghanistan is still a split bag as some see it as a valid war and some don't. It's like Vietnam, but minus the bad attitude towards returning soldiers. When I asked people about it now, most said it was more saying "Thanks for volunteering to defend us if needed."
TL:DR A handshake is basically "thanks for volunteering regardless of what you have done". It is not usually for specific actions.
