Honestly, I don't get the furrie-hate. If people like wearing tails, so frigging what.
It's the association of those costumes with children and the fact that (at least some) furries do adult things in those costumes.
EDIT: RTFA, I see:
Furries say it’s about being social — meeting people with similar interests and helping brighten other people’s days. They recoil at the idea, put forth on a 2003 episode of “CSI,” that it is a sexual fetish.
Riiiiiiight. CSI started it. It's a conspiracy.
EDIT2: Here comes the furry brigade.

sighs It always comes back to the fact that some adults don't like how other adults do sex.
I wish people who thought that way would do a little more thinking. Some adults also like to dress up as pirates and chase each other around the bedroom. Some eat ice cream off of each other. Some call each other "baby". That has nothing to do with children.

The difference is that those adults don't take those same pirate costumes in public and attract children.

Sometimes they do, and so what if they do?
They're not having sex with the kids, they're not even exposing the kids to sexual activities or themes.

Whoa whoa whoa, where do you get off injecting sensibility into this thread?!

sighs I know it's crazy, but some find it repulsive to juxtapose children's things with sex.
Add in that furries anonymize themselves with their costumes, and you shouldn't be surprised that some find the 'fandom' off-putting.

I get that it happens, but we were asking for reasonable justification for why it happens.
The first question I asked you:
why is that a justification for the hate tho?
"Some people do it" isn't reasonable justification or clearly you'd be more accepting of furry lifestyles because, surprise surprise, some people have it as a hobby.

I'm not going to convince you of anything so I might as well move on. I've done my best to explain why furries are repulsive to people.
I think you've found the seed of what makes people uncomfortable but anyone who gives it a moment's consideration should realize there's no need to hate them.
Wait, why is that a justification for the hate tho? Who the heck cares what someone's wearing while they're getting busy with consenting adults?
The percentage of furries who use their suits for yiffing is pretty tiny, that's why most recoil at the idea. Some folks use cosplay sexually too -- but again, so what?

They're costumes that are meant to attract children is why. Keep them in the bedroom and away from children, no one would care or be repulsed.
They're not "meant" to attract children. How the hell is a fox costume specifically intended to attract children? Have you ever been to a sport game?
And so what if a kid looks at these costumes and thinks, "oh that's neat!" What''s the harm in that?
You can be repulsed all you want, but keep that shit to yourself because it's stupid and without basis in reality. Nothing you've mentioned comes anywhere close to justifying hating another person.

Yes, and mascots are targeted toward children. Have you been to a sports game?
Because the costume probably has a fuckhole in it and a pervert inside?

Funny, this coming from a furry I'm assuming.

Have you been to a sports game?
Yea, and most of the attendees aren't kids.
I thought we just covered that the overwhelming majority of fursuiters/furries don't use their costume for sexual purposes. So, you can't assume that's even likely to happen, let alone the default.
And you'd assume wrong (yet again -- a trend I notice), I don't participate in any part of the lifestyle. I just think it's wrong to hate people unless they actually deserve it, and having harmless hobbies I don't share doesn't pass muster.
shekpvar is right though in that the discomfort in furries originated from the assumption that a> it's primarily socially awkward young men having sex/cuddling in costume for "hobby" and that b> the costume is appealing to small children and could be exploited by someone with less than honest ideas.
This kind of falls into the same realm of other "childlike" kinks like diaper wearing and dolly adult dress up for some folks. I remember a MTV expose back in the 90's that brought furries to light in pop culture, and was focused on the sexhole pervert type and not the "I identify with an animal" types. This meant that there was a whole generation of people who are quick to slap the "pervert" label on every furry/fursuit person they see no matter how liberal they see themselves.
Definitely does NOT defend threats of violence, but when you bring the suits out into public spaces there will be assumptions made by people who may not understand/want to understand the innocent roots to the behavior.

I mean, we don't like that people use the sexual costumes to interact with children either. We have a custom Cards Against Humanity card referencing this among my little group. It is repulsive. But that's like hating men because some are abusers. Don't lump us all in to one group.

Sure you don't.
