That's a relief. To me these guys (he and Cody, and the rest of the guys on the fringed) are modern day heroes.

Are you talking about Amir Taaki? I can't find any news about him in 2015 either...

Well I found this from two weeks ago, sounds like Taaki's writing to me, but maybe that's just twitter style: https://twitter.com/TheDarkwallet/status/601550125668806656

Not Amir.

Amir (/u/genjix) has posted a couple of times to the unSYSTEM mailing list recently.

I saw him recently holding a coin between is fingers in front of is eye. He must be ok.

how come the hr hasn't recruited replacements ?

As far as I understand, the DarkWallet "team" is a group of squatters living in an abondoned building on like $5 per day. I'm guessing their HR department might be a little backed up.

Like their toilet.

They sure spent those donations fast for people living the buddhist life.

Did they take in a lot of money? I honestly don't know how they run things. I wish there was a good wallet with a coinjoin / coinshuffle implementation already, I know that.

At least 50000$ from what I've seen. I'd love for a wallet with integrated coin join. Sucks that alts have such a huge edge in that regard. The flexibility they can allow is tremendous.

$50K is nothing to fund this, any of those developers could easily get a $XXX,XXX+ salary with a BTC company.

They don't seem to want to work for "the system" though.

Yeah, that's made pretty clear. Just saying, people going "omg they took $50k sooooo much money!!!" - that is not a lot of money, at all, for a team of software developers, especially working in this field.

How are you supposed to track where the money went if you're using Dark Wallet. Isn't that the whole idea? to be untraceable?

Are these the guys who published their expenses publicly and a lot of those expenses included weed?

Hey man, it turns off your mind's auto-ignore setting so you can see things you'd normally miss. Great for code optimization, I would imagine. Or maybe they just sat around eating tossed cupcakes while railing against "the machine" and quoting Baudrillard.

[–]FUCK_BARACK_OBAMA 0ポイント1ポイント  (0子コメント)

That's not really relevant......

lol. someone should donate a ping pong table. I hear it's worth at least $50 grand now to have one in the office.

JoinMarket has a chance of being more self-sustaining than DarkWallet because it balances financial incentives for all of the participants (instead of depending on people to act out of the kindness of their hearts).

We are very excited about JoinMarket

Will you integrate it into your wallet?

Maybe they got in some legal trouble and are under a gag order.

No canary setup!?

I guess a canary would serve to warn users to not use an ongoing service. If it is down, then that kind of takes care of that already.

This reminds me of this episode of Surprisingly Free about the encrypted email Lavabit and their legal trouble after Edward Snowden used their services. It is very much worth listening.

DPR put a hit out on them.

You may be interested in Samourai Wallet

It is Android only (currently), but we are aiming to be a nice companion to Dark Wallet for mobile devices.

Give us the .apk and get rid of this google+ bullshit. PLEASE!

I know.... It was a poor decision. Basically, we wanted to run our Alpha program through the Google Play store, so that we could receive error logs and stack traces without our testers having to go through a whole ordeal. Additionally, if there was a criticial issue found it is very easy to remove that version and push a fix, if we have APKs in the wild, it can get messy. However, the whole G+ process sucks, and I am very happy to admit my mistake there.

Once we release 1.0 we will be fully open sourced and without the crappy G+ process. My Apologies.

Actually for a pre-release that sounds pretty good idea. As people shouldn't be relying on it 100% yet for privacy anyway. And like you said, having a bunch of pre-release APKs floating around is only going to cause trouble.

Can't you just write a EULA, implement UncaughtExceptionHandler, override uncaughtException(Thread, Throwable), write the stacktrace to a file, and the next time the app is opened, read the file, and upload it to a PHP script on your site and delete/archive the file? How dare you ask for g+ signups! /s

Apologies accepted. The way you explained it makes sense.

Mycellium doesn't seem to have a problem as most go through the PS anyway. It's just not an option for me. So I will wait for the 1.0 release. Best wishes for you.

You may be interested in Samourai Wallet

It is Android only (currently), but we are aiming to be a nice companion to Dark Wallet for mobile devices.

Anything made for mobile cannot be aimed at privacy, as our mobile devices are those most connected to our identities.

If you would like to make a real serious privacy enabled wallet, please do so for linux (first) and then windows.

Being secure on a disconnected device is probably too simple. Tails + Armory not good enough? This Samourai obviously aims for the harder problem first, and why not?

Looks pretty cool. I just requested access to the alpha; thanks for posting.

Thanks! Hope you like it, and feel free to make any comments, concerns, or suggestions.

Needs Google+ for signup? What? :(

See response below. Essentially, so we can distribute the Alpha program through the Google Play store.

[–]Big_Brother_is_here 1ポイント2ポイント  (1子コメント)

I will be very interested once it's available for iOs.

It is certainly planned. However, certain features like stealth mode and remote SMS commands as far as I know are not really possible on iOS

Look into /r/joinmarket

Why is this getting downvotes? Altcoiners out in force today?

Monero is big recently here. They haven't figured out that spin-offs make it impossible for an altcoin to win (or even compete!) as the WWL against Bitcoin on its home turf. The only way for an altcoin to win as an alternative ledger is to market it to fresh blood, people who have never invested in Bitcoin. Any bitcoiner will always prefer the spinoff version that maintains their percentage stake of the WWL. Need to go market it as something new, unrelated to Bitcoin, not to the community here, as all you can get is a very limited "fear hedge" from bitcoiners, and that dies the moment a viable spinoff is proved as a concept (hasn't happened yet because there are no worthy coins, Monero is the best candidate but still too early to create a spinoff).

Don't laugh, Ripple is bigger than Bitcoin here in Japan, because they got Amway to sell it (and because of Bitcoin's bad rep from MtGox).

It looks as though the developers have abandoned the project without telling anyone why.

Were there monies raised?

They raised $50,000 on Indiegogo back in 2013. They had a few more donation rounds, but I don't remember how much was raised. They also accepted individual donations.

I remember the project's "detailed budget" included €300 for pot for their development team in Spain.

I thought they completed several smaller rounds on Lighthouse also. So much money has been siphoned away for these projects that never deliver, very disappointing really.

But the software is working already, isn't it? I fiddled around with the last alpha.

They have done three rounds on Lighthouse. The most recent one was claimed a week ago.

Is there any verification for lighthouse? I know that there are still unspent funds, so I find it rather strange that 'DW' tries to raise even more...

That's why we have a reputation system.

It didn't help. Are you surprised?

they are still working on it, just too stoned right now ah ah

They raised $50,000 on Indiegogo back in 2013.

It was a lot more than that; I think that was the fiat amount, not including BTC. I may be wrong, but that's what I remember.

7 BTC sent just a little over a month ago. I guess they are too busy to maintain their websites and write code, but have just enough time to cash out some of the bitcoins.

[–]Riiume 1

I dunno, I donated about $200 in BTC though. Oh well, there are other BTC projects out there worth funding (OpenBazaar, JoinMarket).

DarkWallet is interesting

but there are also several fatal flaws to privacy

1) Obelisks know too much, although in theory you can run your OWN obelisk and transaction info from that through TOR

2) You never know the liquidity of the mixer. If there are no (or not enough) coins to mix with then it will send your transaction out directly. Even with stealth it will link back to you in clear. This can be solved with dedicated participants (like market makers) always sending stuff through it. An interesting idea but I'd like them to be anonymous too, tricky to raise funds for that.

3) If you DID know the liquidity, this too would give too much information. As you could correlate this to individuals making transactions

If you just read whitepapers you will never learn the problems of the technologies the creators are heralding. Just stick with private blockchains (and learn the pros and cons of them too, like why you shouldn't use the "mixin = 0, 1 or 2" parameter.)

What do you mean when you say

Just stick with private blockchains

Private blockchains have "opt-in transparency", public blockchains have "opt-in privacy".

Bitcoin is a public blockchain.

Monero is a private blockchain.

Every transaction and address in Monero is a stealth address. That is relevant here because Darkwallet also uses stealth addresses on Bitcoin's network, but unfortunately bitcoin's public blockchain creates weak links, whereas Monero's private blockchain has no weak links this way.

Monero further obfuscates transactions using ring signatures in every transaction. Nobody casually looking at a blockchain transaction knows the to-and-from address, similarly a casual observer doesn't know the addresses used at all because these aren't published in the transaction or in the blockchain.

Monero is not a clone of bitcoin, and its easy to use browser wallet is here www.mymonero.com

www.shapeshift.io takes monero

Pity there is still no standalone GUI wallet.

pity indeed.

There is MoneroX, but I've never used it. I eventually buckled down and got simplewallet, the command line tool.

www.MyMonero.com is made by the core developers and it only has access to your viewkey, not your private keys (but its not like anybody would notice if they implemented an AJAX POST Request of your seed). So, I too would prefer a GUI wallet.

Wasn't this the project fronted/ran by Cody Wilson, of wikiweapons and DefCad fame?

Edit: Yes (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cody_Wilson#Dark_Wallet)

Yes and Amir Taaki

In case you want to try out the current Darkwallet Alpha version, here is the link to the Chrome store: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/darkwallet/kaljldbhpbafnfgnkbcfndifmjgmciml Just read the description on the side before you start using it.

To reply to the question: AFAIK the backend stability is the main problem. The Darkwallet is a beautiful product, it only seems that the devs wanted to build too much at once. But give it a try. All is open source (of course), so a community take over would be recommended. If somebody thinks of doing this, please get in touch.

Check us out at http://samouraiwallet.com and join our alpha test program .

Good luck with the project. One thing I noticed: It always sounds strange when I read "Military Grade Encryption".

how about "Export Grade Encryption"!

wheres the github?

is this the only wallet on the face of the earth thats not open source?

The site appears to be back up.

So does DarkWallet (specifically the stealth functionality) work right now or no?

Site is up for me. Probably was offline for maintenance.UnSystem site is online also. Check if online for you, if not, what nation you from?

Yet Darkwallet has not moved out of alpha stage, how much more funding do they need?

Ask irc. Stop speculating . #darkwallet

Last commit on github also 3 months ago. Not even a typo fix or styling change. Seems that the dev team gas stopped... But since its open source another group or individual can pick it up. Perhaps amir ran with the money after their donation campaign.

Was this really needed? Between Shared Coin and other services can't people get as much privacy as is reasonably possible with bitcoin? I think it's a great idea in general to work on really strong privacy-preserving wallets, but I just don't know how unique DarkWallet was compared to other options.

Quite frankly, as I said when the project was announced, this isn't Cody Wilson's most disruptive idea. I remember post-Liberator he was talking about 3D printing patented medical devices... I wonder where that went? That would have both been highly disruptive, and perhaps also would have ingratiated him to the people on the left that he was intentionally provoking with The Liberator.

I don't remember Vitalik being part of darkwallet team.

You can't use the word Dark in your name. It just can't be done. It was probably secretly renewed as Open instead.

[–]capitulate_with_me -1ポイント0ポイント  (5子コメント)

My personal theory is is that it was never intended for alpha and the unstable beta version air qoutes not for real money end air quotes keeps developers out of legal trouble and gives the community a springboard to develop a more mature and decentralized platform.

Why the fuck don't you just use "" ?!

Darkwallet developers disappeared around 2-4 months ago.

Um, no. DNS was just a symptom of a larger problem. I saw they were foundering long ago.

Maybe one of these "suck up to regulators to make bitcoin appear legitimate in the eyes of the sheeple" types paid off the dark wallet team to abandon their project. It is a pity that they just disappeared without any updates. I donated to them & was looking forward to their finished product.

Maybe one of these "suck up to regulators to make bitcoin appear legitimate in the eyes of the sheeple" types paid off the dark wallet team to abandon their project.

Why would they need to do that when the team can budget for weed and run off for 3 months without anyone noticing?

Use Monero.

Anonymity/privacy must happen at the individual node. Coinjoin, Coinswap, et al, seem to require some form of centralization unless they are built right into the bitcoin protocol.

Well for a coinjoin to work all parties involved in the join need to know the transaction information of the others. But if you do several chains in a row, it might be pretty secure. You would only need a central party for finding peers, but this could be DHT or whatever like torrents use.

Not true. They can all be done in a decentralized way.

Yeah, well, it isn't happening. I know of no decentralized implementations. So, saying it can be done is swell, but people need the actual implementation.

So, I am standing by my original statement. And like I said previously, unless it happens at individual nodes, it isn't useful long term.

Building decentralized things takes more work than centralized, and fewer people have the background. Have patience.

I wanted Bitcoin 20 years ago; but no one knew how to make it then yet today we have it. We know how to build decentralized CoinJoin (and have known even before CoinJoin had a name), have patience... Also, I've heard joinmarket has made good progress.

This is something I intend to work on eventually. I would have done it earlier but I got side tracked working on a messaging protocol that can allow it to be done p2p rather than on a server.

If someone wants to tackle coinshuffle with me that would definitely speed it up. I only get to work on my side projects 2 or 3 days a week in my spare time.

Coinshuffle is a decentralized version of coinjoin. I don't know much about it though.

Is there any implementation of it anywhere yet? Or other decentralised mixer tech? (besides Dash, I don't know if that's centralised or not though)

Monero Privacy at the protocol level and node. Dash tends to centralize and its a massive con job (pre-mine).

I meant coinshuffle specifically since it's something we could potentially use with BTC at some point. No chance that BTC ever gets ring sigs.

This is a major, major problem with bitcoin. It is not adapting to people's desires. i.e. anonymity, etc.

The moment anyone who practiced good Bitcoin anonymity measures is verifiably arrested for info obtained through the blockchain, the community will respond. Right now it's just a theoretical consideration, and since plausible deniability is the name of the game in legal protections, complete anonymity may not be needed in the real world. Keep in mind that ring sigs vastly increase resource usage, allowing for a lot lower TPS (or less decentralization). Bitcoin will make whatever tradeoffs are most practical to meet real, present threats.

You can find a very good explanation of how it works, with illustrations here https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=567625.0 It is really easy to understand. I suppose all is needed is a parallel network for peers to communicate, form and sign the coinjoin transaction.

TPTB are done accumulating, so no need to use Dark Wallet to FUD Bitcoin anymore.

So why isn t the price going up ?

Patience. They are setting the stage.

I'm going to buy at $174.

If the TPTB are already done accumulating, they must not be planning to buy much. I think TPTB have more than a few million/billion to spend.
