That's the kind of comeback where you just have to sit down and reevaluate your life for a while.

I laughed out loud in real life when I read that. Hardly ever happens.

In a few months, we'll see a version of this on /r/thatHappened

And then the proof by the co-founder with the message "I wrote that comment, asshat."

Once I've gotten a ways into my professional career I promise to look up people talking smack in relation to my work so I can put the boot up their arses. I promise.

This is kind of related. I was the asst store manager for a target once and our store manager was walking the store with the weights and measures guy for some type of inspection. While she is with him a customer comes up and starts bitching about how the pricing is labled on a shelf. My manager explains it to her and the woman starts to get pissy about it and says that it's not clear so she should get it for free/discount. My manager declines and the woman threatens to call the dept of weights and measures. My manager said she just looks back at the guy who smiles and hands the woman his card. He simply says "the pricing seems perfectly clear to me".

Niiiice~

I always hated those people when I worked retail last year. I had two ladies come in once and ask me to clarify a price on an item, and to be fair, the items had identical names, but different prices, and different physical properties (slightly).

However I scanned the barcode and explained which was which price, no problem. At which point they began loudly complaining about how they should get the more expensive item at the cheaper price, and how ridiculous it is we can't print our labels right (we don't make them!), and how they should get a further discount for the minor inconvenience.

Fortunately, I wasn't in sales, so I referred them to the most surly bad tempered sales associate I knew. He proceeded to completely ignore them. Ahhhh sweet though unsound business practice wise revenge.

All you have to do is read the last few digits of the printed barcode and match them with the item. It's pretty simple at most chain stores

That guy is such a dildo.

No, I'm pretty sure it said asshat.

Man . . . It's not really a cliff notes subject, or it's one for someone better than me at cliff notes.

I'd watch this It's potato quality, and a bit old, but it's a pretty decent documentary on the subject. For more than that you'd have to spend some time reading up on it on your own. I don't really have time to write an essay on it at the moment. My opinion comes from that documentary, general interest in japanese culture, some japanese extended family, and some reading on the topic ( I think after I watched the documentary, can't remember specific sources anymore though).

ELI5: The bullshitter makes a claim that Plex is like leaving your DVD collection in the middle of the living room with the doors unlocked. Basically the guy makes some accusation about a service. The lead programmer of that services calls him out, the guy doesn't realize who he is writing to and asks the lead if he's looked at the sourcecode of his own project.

Plex is a wonderful service, if you were unaware by the way. It's a free way to turn your home computer (or any computer really) into a media server, and then access that media remotely. I use and love it deeply.

but it's not free it's like $5 a month.

unless that' just for PS4 use.

It is free, however you are right the console plex clients require plex pass which is like 5$ a month.

However pc to pc is free. Android and iPhone apps are one time 4.99$ purchase along with the roku and other stream box solutions.

It's a fantastic service if you have a big media server.

That's for a Plex Pass, which is required for some new content-- like the ps4-- but is entirely optional. Eventually, the PS4 app will not require a plex pass subscription, and the basic services are 100% free.

I find it funny that he's calling someone a script kiddie while bragging about doing a wireshark analysis.

There is plenty of in-depth stuff to be done with Wireshark. I did network engineering for a number of years and I don't think any of us were "script kiddies" for relying on such a powerful tool.

In this case I think the guy is just name dropping it. Why else would he mention Wireshark specifically? Plenty of tools around for packet analysis.

Oh yeah no doubt. It's kind of like I wouldn't take an engineer seriously if they didn't know Wireshark, but mentioning Wireshark doesn't suddenly make you an engineer.

psh, everyone knows real engineers use tcpdump exclusively

Latency is too high, and there's always exploits for the formatters. No the only real way to do packet sniffing is to shove an ethernet cable up your nose.

[–]Buzzard [

Yeah, I use tcpdump all the time. to capture traffic before loading into wireshark

I bet it looks extra crispy in the dark.

But what if we actually use it to configure switches? :(

Plenty of tools around for packet analysis.

Which are your favourites for GUI-based analysis? Anything with traction?

Because wireshark is the big one? Name other packet analysis software without googling.

Script kiddie is like an anti insult. Pretty sure using it only makes the user look dumb.

"You just started to learn to code, let me make fun of you for being new you piece of shit"

I'm guessing thats what script kiddie is referring too, I understood none of what was going on in that post besides that person getting rekt.

A script kiddie is one who only knows enough to run scripts that are written by someone else. The real skill is in reducing complexity enough to allow a script to be written.

And writing a script is no fucking joke, took me 10+ years to learn how to write my own just to play a character in a text based video game.

a script kiddie doesn't know how to code, they just use tools/code other people have made and think they're cool/superior/smart for using them.

[–]Kruug 8

I think it's more than just not knowing how to code. To me, it's always been that skiddies download tools, click buttons, etc, and don't understand WHY the tool works. If you know the why and how (not necessarily at a low-level) then you're not a skiddie.

In car terms, you understand the idea of internal combustion as opposed to "Press pedal, go vroom". You don't need to know how to build an engine, or even know how to perform maintenance, but you understand WHY the car goes vroom when the pedal is pressed.

Script kiddie and proud. Playing around with other peoples' things is fun!

As your lawyer I advise you not to say that under cross examination

A script kiddie is a person who can't program, so he/she uses tools made by other people, and usually don't bother to try and understand how it works.

Oh so like a JavaScript programmer?

No, you're thinking of PHP

Really, languages are a crutch - real coders write executable binary directly to memory.

JavaScript is a programming language, so no.

Edit: Crap, this isn't the first time the joke went over my head.

[–]DEAD_DOVE_DO_NOT_EAT 5ポイント6ポイント  (1子コメント)

Not a goddamned thing.

This is just too good. An opportunity to completely shut someone down like that is rare.

It's actually not. There's just too many people behaving like that. They pretend to be know-it-alls and have no shame doing it in front of the world-class experts in the topic they're bullshitting in.

PLEX turns your own home computer into a media server. You can stream video, music and photos-from your home pc to your device of choosing. It's like a private Netflix.

The guy says that a competing piece of software is better, and that PLEX stores a list of your media and users on their servers which anti-piracy types might find usefull.

The creator of Plex tell him that Plex doesn't store anything like that. He also informs the person that SSL has been implemented on Plex (today). He says he knows this because he wrote the software.

To add to this, SSL means it's encrypted.

As for plex, I currently use a hard drive attached to my router shared using samba. What can plex offer me that kodi can't using samba streaming?

I suspect not much other than a different interface, but I don't know Samba well enough to say for sure. They're a great service though-- obviously there can be more than one great service out there though :)

Oh disregard I just figured it out, regardless of how good plex is or isn't it wouldn't work for my use case because I can run samba without any computers being on, my router streams it all right from a directly connects hard drive. Unless plex supports samba... In that case maybe I will check it out.

I gave mizuu, which supports samba, a preliminary look and it seems nice too but I haven't tried it on my Nexus Player which is the main thing I will be using it for. I hear plex works for NP...

In your case it sounds like Plex probably isn't the best solution, yeah. It's a wonderful service though for the people it makes sense for. I have really appreciated how transparent they are, and how well they communicate with their user base.

Question,

Say you're at your friends house and don't have your computer with you or anything, and they have a roku or apple tv or ps4 (basically any tv streaming device) or a public computer that you cannot install any programs on, can your setup stream to those? Like through the browser(like netflix) Your setup sounds better than plex if it can do those but the reason I'm on plex is that I stream to devices mentioned above

Plex just gives you a nice interface thats it. Samba sharing works just fine but is just "dirty". I've used both and I prefer Plex. Really at the the end of the day it doesn't matter.

Without all the programming stuff basically guy1 is calling out a service for something, guy2 says it's bullshit and explains then links to a blog, guy1 says anyone can read a blog and asked if he looked at the code and called him a name, guy2 actually wrote the code and rekts him.

Stupid analogy but you'll probably understand.

Guy1 complains on a forum about a car and says it has engine problems.

Guy2 says it's bullshit and links to a blog by company confirming that it is bullshit

Guy1 asks if he even looked at the engine

Guy2 built the engine

can't believe that dude used "script kiddie" unironically

It just doesn't make any sense either. Plex is just a way to visualize and access your media. I could put two files "Gladiator.mkv" and "Godfather.mkv" into my server, one burned from a dvd I bought at Best Buy, and the other downloaded via TPB. There's no way that Plex (or anyone else) could tell which of those files was obtained legally and which was not just by looking at plex, since all it can see is that i have two .mkv's.

Cool post but OMG i had no idea something like this exists. I have over 4Tb of movies and tv on my computer. And now I can stream all of it to my phone. As I'm writing this my library is being populated and I already spent the 5 bucks for the android app. Fucking awesome.
