          I thought New Vegas was a pretty good modernization of this type of game. Then again, many people who worked on FO2 and Van Buren work at Obsidian, so that's no surprise.           I think you are partially correct. It advanced the setting, but it also brought the series 10 years into the future with advancements in graphics and it brought the game to a new audience of players on the PS3 and XBOX (even though they are all peasants).

          New engine basically. The difference between a spin-off and a sequel in this case is that New Vegas is essentially the same gameplay-wise and visually, to the extent that it could be misinterpreted as a game-length expansion pack. Because of this there's a substantial difference in development time between New Vegas and 4.

            depending on your operating system you'll most likely have to look up some fixes for fo3, unless you're using vista (lol). it's pretty easy but without them you'll be crashing every couple minutes

            They are independent so nothing is needed. But I highly recommend 3 and new Vegas and if you find you really enjoy the world and lore, try out 1 and 2

              Can someone ELI5 to me why Half Life 3 is being juxtaposed with Fallout 4 a lot? One is by Valve, the other is not. One has had fairly regular release cycle over the years, the other has been vapourware. One has been anticipated to the point of being a cliched meme, the other has not.

              That any sight of it now would mean a flurry of pre-orders and sky-high anticipatipons.

              Why would this never be made? It's only been 8 years since episode 2, they've released many games since, and Source 2 was recently announced. They obviously know what people are saying about it. That plus with the steam machines coming out, it almost feels like they're setting people up for the release, especially if it's going to have big hardware requirements.

              HL3 can never be released due to it being in a legal limbo :\ I don't know all the details, but it has something to do with how HL2 was a "Play it on ATI!" product, and there is some spillover requirement on HL3 for the same branding. The problem, as I understand it, is that the game heavily leveraged nvidia libraries and proprietary code, under early and onerous enough licenses that they want it to be released as a "Play in Geforce!" product. So there is an impossible branding clash.

              So, huge parts of it would need to be redeveloped and QC'd, and it's not cost effective to do that for a game that's already been finished for a number of years, so it just sits on the shelf in eternal limbo. Maybe if Intel buys nvidia or something, they'll be able to work it out then.
