askscience 内の Stressmove によるリンク What does the vy stand for in the name of the largest known star: vy Canis Majoris?

[–]Dannei 1ポイント2ポイント  (0子コメント)

So you'd name one of the brightest stars in a constellation "alpha ___" where the blank is the constellation's name. A good example of this is "alpha Cen," the nearest star system to our own. After this comes "beta Cen" and so on, going through the Greek alphabet.

It's even better than that. You organise all the stars in the constellation into magnitude classes (magnitudes also being an archaic system of measuring brightness). Then, within each class, you distribute the letters in order of right ascension (essentially position). Therefore, alpha ___ is not necessarily the brightest star in a constellation - it is the star in the brightest magnitude class with the lowest right ascension in the constellation.

askscience 内の cGxvd21hbg によるリンク Why isn't Ireland more forested?

[–]Dannei 997ポイント998ポイント  (0子コメント)

This article discusses the history of forests in Ireland, and their decline (and the current efforts to increase the amount of forest). Much like other areas of Western Europe, Ireland previously had much more forest cover, much of which was removed by human activity. This was firstly to increase the amount of land available for farming, and then later wood became an important material for industrial uses (much of which was exported to England, which had suffered from the same deforestation).

askscience 内の LietKynes62 によるリンク Are moons of planets pre-formed entities captured by gravity or are they formed around the planet like a miniature protoplanetary disk?

[–]Dannei 7ポイント8ポイント  (0子コメント)

Much to my surprise, this isn't something I've seen many papers on - in short, the answer seems to be "yes, and more".

This review paper (2014) by Heller et al. states that both mechanisms have some supporters, and it seems that the feeling is that both happen, as there is evidence for both in the solar system.

It would be hard to make nicely organised sets of coplanar moons like Saturn and Jupiter have without a circumplanetary disc, but this places limits on how large a moon you can make relative to the planet.

As for capture, a number of moons in the solar system are thought to be captured asteroids, such as some of the gas giants' moons, and (perhaps) Mars' moons, Phobos and Deimos.

For a fun alternative, our Moon has a curiously similar composition to the Earth, implying that it came from the same source material - however, it's much too large to have been formed by a circumplanetary disc. Instead, the leading idea for its formation is the giant impact hypothesis, where the early Earth collided with a Mars-sized object, with the ejected material coalescing to form the moon. However, there's a variety of other theories around!

The amount of conspiracy theories coming out following this election, especially from bitter Left-leaning voters, is utterly ridiculous. I honestly wouldn't be surprised if the amount of hate and vitriol that has come from the Left is part of the reason that they gained less votes than initially expected.

I've heard this mentioned elsewhere. It's been said the speed limits before are 80mph, then a 60mph curve, then the accident curve at 50. Assuming the limit was followed before, it seems like you would need some impressive acceleration to hit 107 from 60 (or even 80), unless it's more spread out than I imagine?

If the control system was aware of the speed limit, why wouldn't it be used to limit the train's speed? That would be a strange investment to make.

trains 内の Czarified によるリンク Why are some yards split into chunks like this?

[–]Dannei 13ポイント14ポイント  (0子コメント)

To put it simply, because different parts are used for different things! In general, a large yard will tend to have three areas - a Receiving Yard, a Sorting Yard (likely a Hump Bowl for the largest yards), and a Departures Yard. In addition, there's likely to be a loco servicing area and somewhere to repair cars - those can sometimes be significant facilities, and your image shows some large repair shops in the middle (the long, large buildings). For a very large facility, you may even have two sets of Arrivals, Sorting, and Departures yards, one for each direction, whilst smaller locations can combine some or all of these into a single yard.

Trains arrive in the receiving yard, where the cars are inspected and the train is made ready for sorting. The incoming locomotives will go off for servicing, and eventually shunting locomotives will take the train and sort it. Once it is time for a train to depart, the relevant cars are collected from the sorting yard and taken to the departures yard, where the train is made ready for departure, the brakes checked, and the locomotives attached.

You might also have other areas, such as intermodal, automotive, or bulk cargo loading facilities. Alternatively, some yards have a very scattered design that doesn't fit this sort of model very well, due to age, subsequent expansion, and/or limited space.
