Holding the inside line into La Source would have badly compromised Raikkonen's line, likely allowing Hamilton an easy overtake on corner exit. Perhaps Raikkonen could have done slightly better, but no matter what he did, he was likely being overtaken.

The rule was clarified after the event, but I don't consider the argument that Hamilton was driving "within the rules" to be a defense. It was well understood that a driver going out of track bounds had to return to a static racing situation afterwards. Hamilton didn't do that -- he was partly alongside Raikkonen when he rejoined and was clearly well aware of that given he was watching Raikkonen's car as he rejoined.

It also wasn't the only time Hamilton's behavior on-track led to previously unwritten rules having to be explicitly written. See his weaving against Petrov for another example.

I don't see Alonso leaving anytime soon. He wants a third title badly and McLaren is his best shot for now. They are showing rapid progress right now. He also can't move elsewhere without him or someone else buying out of his massive contract.

I agree that Alonso would likely beat Vandoorne. Nevertheless, he would be much happier with having Button alongside him. Facing Vandoorne is a no-win situation as far as Alonso is concerned.

As for the comparison of Vandoorne and Magnussen, Vandoorne has hands-down the stronger junior career.

I would put down Istanbul and Hungary spins down to stupidity more than anything else.

Hamilton is an extremely canny racer. He knew exactly what he was doing in both circumstances. His race was ruined without taking a huge risk that put others' safety in peril. He took the risks anyway.

I disagree that he "cynically" gave his place back to Kimi.

I'm not sure how anyone impartial can say that. There was no defense available to Raikkonen that would have retained the position going into La Source. Thus, the position wasn't really yielded.

That is a possible interpretation of the data, but it is certainly not proven, nor is it considered the most parsimonious interpretation by those who work in this field of research.

Hamilton is not above such things either. He reneged on an agreement with McLaren and Alonso at Hungary 2007 to gain an advantage over his teammate in qualifying. He accepted team orders in his favor at Malaysia 2013. He spun his car across the track in an extremely dangerous fashion after a spin at Turkey 2006 in GP2; he repeated the same move at Hungary 2011 and this time got penalized. He cynically gave a place back to Raikkonen without yielding his advantage at Belgium 2008. He was caught lying to the stewards to try to gain a position under the safety car at Australia 2009.

Maybe he is less willing to bend the rules than others, but he's certainly not as pure of heart as some would make out.

Read the cited studies. They do not only pertain to movies.

Effectiveness can be assessed by numerous metrics, including:

whether individuals take up smoking over a given time period, as a function of their advertising exposure
brand awareness
pre-study and post-study positive/negative attitudes towards smoking and tobacco advertising

Well, sure, this is F1 and contracts can always be bought out. However in this case it's quite clear. There is no compelling reason to buy out either of two highly-performing proven champions for a gamble on Magnussen. If they are going to gamble on anyone in 2016 it would surely be Vandoorne, and I can't see Alonso liking the prospect of another super-rookie alongside him at McLaren...

This doesn't seem to be a question, but there's no reason for them to leave next year, since they will still be receiving approximately the same prize money as this year. However, if they get beaten by Haas in 2016 and 2017, they will lose about 80% of their prize money in 2018. That will be the real test for them if the prize structure is not reformed by then.

WHen I was a teen I thought JPS was cool because of F1.

Ditto with Marlboro for me. I had a very positive brand association with Marlboro when I was young. That didn't lead to smoking for me, but the statistics are unequivocal. People who were in my position were much more likely to take up smoking. People are not impervious automatons who make all their decisions in a vacuum with infinite willpower.

First, that is not a scientific test of any association between advertising exposure and tobacco use. There are many other environmental factors that might have affected use rate over the same time period.

Second, the quote pertains only to tobacco advertising targeted at youth. Youth would still have been exposed to the many other tobacco advertisements at that time.

Third, there are many scientific studies that have actually tested the association between tobacco advertising (included youth-targeted advertising) and tobacco use in teenagers. As I said, these have concluded that there is a strong effect.

Fourth, the very same page from which you fished that quote states, unequivocally,

Exposure to pro-tobacco marketing and media more than doubles the chances (2.2 times) of children and adolescents starting tobacco use.

One study found that teens exposed to the greatest amount of smoking in movies were 2.6 times more likely to start smoking themselves compared with teens who watched the least amount of smoking in movies

I don't think Merhi can be long for this world. Leimer tried to buy a seat at Sauber last year, but was outbid by Gutierrez ($14 million for Leimer vs. $28 million for Gutierrez). Merhi is apparently bringing almost no sponsorship, his year so far has been awful, and his junior record is similarly underwhelming as Leimer's. Taking on Leimer for the cash seems a no-brainer.

Prize money for 10th is around $60 million. Their current budget wouldn't be much bigger than that; certainly less than $100 million. Their estimated 2014 budget was only around $70 million. The rest would be made up by team sponsors, driver sponsors, and possibly investments from the owners.

That's not correct. There is a huge scientific literature on the effects of advertising on consumer decisions. In the case of tobacco, it has been shown time and again that the likelihood of a teenager taking up smoking is directly related to their exposure to tobacco advertising. This remains true even after controlling for potential confounders.

Unfortunately it doesn't always work that way. Advertising is highly effective in shaping people's opinions, often on a subconscious level. People like to believe that they are the masters of their own destiny, but research demonstrates very clearly that they are not. There's a reason tobacco companies dumped literally billions of dollars into advertising. Whether people are aware of it or not, those advertisements have a strong effect on people's decisions.

I've definitely seen both many times. My guess would be that in the majority of cases drivers don't release the wheel.
