What case are you referring to? Anthony Grainger? The CPS have charged the GMP Chief Constable over that. Azelle Rodney? the CPS are charging the officer with murder.

Example from home office statistics: 2008-2012 Police opened fire a total of 18 times. 2011/2012 there were 12,550 incidents in which there were firearms officers on the scene with authorisation to fire. They fired 5 times. Not going to deny that there are fuck-ups (de Menzes being a prime example, although interestingly another case of blending military and police - SAS officers on secondment where involved in the operation - although likely didn't actually shoot) though.

Every year an independent public body (not without its flaws but still) investigates and publishes a report going over deaths 'during or following police contact'. For example, in 2012/2013 for police in England and Wales:

• 30 road traffic fatalities

• No fatal police shootings

• 15 deaths in or following police custody

• 64 apparent suicides following police custody

• 21 other deaths following police contact

They don't mention it because its not comparable to the US police situation.

Not sure I can even mount read-only ext4 over iSCSI in multiple locations because the log is replayed regardless so read-only mounts will still write to the underlying block device and cause a clusterfuck.

Fortunately, there are only 5 or so users for this and everything is in the same enclosure so might just have to live with the single point of failure. Well until we upgrade our storage and add more nodes to the SAN and can re-explore the whole clustered/distributed FS morass.

Also I guess with this set-up I can just shift the processes that have an unhappy relationship with NFS and run them on the blade running the NFS server (so connected to the SAN via iSCSI).

I'll take your advice and go the NFS route. Just a quick sensibility check: using NFSv4 to share the mountpoint of the SAN (iSCSI) on BladeA to the other Blades in the enclosure wouldn't be doing anything too stupid would it?

At this point almost all the MAVEN work is at KSC. The PHSF and the entire center is practically shuttered. Only one gate is even open to KSC.

There is also the safety side. We were kicked out of our NASA building despite having already been paid for the period as the safety officers and supervising civil servants weren't allowed in. This meant we weren't adhering to the safety guidelines therefore couldn't work. Of course, the only folks that could catch us and give us shit for doing that also couldn't be in...

I largely agree but where I think it does work well is when you are dealing with a large complex figure e.g. metabolic map and want to zoom in and talk about various parts of it. Using slides can be quite jarring and disjointed and it makes it easier for the audience to lose where they are in the figure.

The only thing that is worse on the Berlin underground/suburban is the maps. Colour choice for lines is awful, I've spent far too long trying to differentiate lines on that map especially where you have a load jammed together. The group travel pass is fucking awesome though.

Another point is that googleable for one person isn't necessarily for another - big range of googling skills out there and you also have the factor of tailored google search results that may hinder some people. Generally I agree but can't really see a workable solution.

I usually get more success with googling using a site:www.reddit.com/r/askscience modifier. Though I have had rare moments where the reddit search actually performed better, took me by surprise.

We could change the message or modify it further. A quick glance at SRS' CSS I can't see anything that leapt out at me for hiding deleted comments but it could be there. I guess there is an argument between utility of the deleted comments are reminders of rules/subreddit policy (especially if people have linked in from front page or other subs and might not remember what subreddit they are in) versus the downside of aesthetics and people asking about deleted comments.

But then you are systematically lying to a patient. That may be fine for isolated treatments, but seems a bit unethical for long-term ones.

This is pretty much the issue some doctors (well strictly the STC and BMC) have mentioned on the issue with national policies of prescription of placebos. It shouldn't be done on a national level and ideally on an individual level but on discretion (and the Damoclesian GMC) of the individual doctor.

Interestingly placebos CAN work even if the patient is told it is a placebo [1]. Another interesting aspect is placebos are not without side-effects (so-called "nocebo" effects [2] [3]), even homeopathy [4].

The argument for keep the patient within the system is a good one (even if it relies on ethical referring of patients which homeopaths haven't exactly got a spotless record of so far [5]) but as pointed out medical doctors individually already use placebos when needed (burn victims and opiate placebos for example) without having to support and validate an alternative medicine industry overseen and administered by individuals that are palpably not medical doctors.

I'd be astounded if a wiki on open access wasn't itself open access. I don't seem to need to log-in even off the institutional network?

Also, another possibility in place of OA journals is a government run open access archive (pre-print or not) like pubmed. If a government wants open access they can leverage a lot more pressure on publishers and are less likely to be sued by them than a few scientists with servers.

That makes sense regarding temporary OA, I can see how that would be flawed it also is problematic with the issue of papers not becoming important immediately.

This isn't the first incidence where you have mentioned "prestige" without acknowledging that for I would say the vast majority of researchers the goal is a high impact factor for grants and any "prestige" is incidental. As for the "ego" and "bloody-mindedness" good thing with science is in theory and in practice (mostly) when someone disproves an idea even your favourite pet hypothesis you move on. Sure there have been deep arguments over things "cladistics wars" being a classic and particularly vicious one but this kind of disagreement almost always gets resolved eventually and this discussion and disproving others ideas is how science advances.
