A government investigation of a private enterprise started by a student!
The subpoena of Jeremy Rubin and Tidbit may be heavy handed and overkill as opposed to a more friendly way of enforcing the law (who said US law enforcement excels at gentleness anyhow?).
But they are not subpoena' due to a research paper or a journal article or an "academic exercise". They are doing this because Rubin turned it into a commercial activity by advertising and circulating relevant code snippets.
They even snookered the MIT president to write a letter
