Wtf is wrong with you guys? Every time there's a post with a person that happens to be Muslim, even though Islam isn't mentioned once. You all seem to lose about 70 IQ points.

Grow up.

Those IQ points were never there to begin with.

Negative IQ points is a thing now.

They're trying to trade IQ points for Karma points.

As terrible as it is to giggle there...I did

As a fellow Muslim, I attribute it to them being jealous of our hijab game.

What if I told you those IQ points were never there to begin with?

Meh, nowhere in the Koran does it mention covering a woman from head to toes. It talks about modesty (which makes those niqab wearing designer purse toting women a walking contradiction) but never talks about covering their hair.

It's some stupid cultural/regional trait that has been passed off as religious. To sexualise a woman's hair is just beyond belief.

Muslim women covering their head is nothing to do with their religion and everything to do with how/where they were brought up.

Islam is not the only religion where women cover hair. And its not about "sexualizing hair". Its about modesty and humbleness. That's why men are also required to cover their head during prayers and other rituals.

You missed my point, the Koran doesn't ask for women to cover their hair.

If not sexualising their hair, what other reason is there for hiding it?

It's mentioned in Surat Nur - Verses 30-31. (link below)

See also verse number 59 in Surah, which gives the meaning of:

{O Prophet! Tell thy wives and thy daughters and the women of the believers to draw their cloaks close round them [when they go abroad]. That will be better, that so they may be recognized and not annoyed. Allah is ever Forgiving, Merciful.}

The above verses very clearly show that it is Allah Almighty Himself, Who commands the women to wear hijab, though that word is not used in the above verses. In fact, the term hijab means much more than the covering of the body; it refers to the code of modesty outlined in the verses quoted above.

Look at the expressions used: “Lower their gaze”, “be modest”, “not to display their adornment”, “draw the veils over their bosoms” “not to stamp their feet” etc.

Note: Like what is mentioned above, Women were already covering their heads, it was only the fact that it didn't completely cover their breasts/upper chest area, basically.

It must be clear to any thinking person what is meant by all the above expressions in the Holy Quran. Women in the Prophet’s time used to wear a kind of dress that covered the head, but not the bosom properly. So when they are asked to draw their veils over their bosoms so as not to reveal their beauty, it is clear that the dress must cover the head as well as the body. And hair is considered by people in most cultures of the world - not only in the Arab culture - as an attractive part of a woman’s beauty.

So, guys, please chill. Hijab is in the Qur'an and is mentioned in several saheeh ahadith (authentic sayings of the prophet).

I tip my hat to you for your ability to pull a quote that proves your point, but like the bible you cannot take everything line for line as literal.

Even by your own standards it doesn't mandate the wearing of the hijab. It does convey modesty and covering their bosom would fit this.

I could easily argue this as a reason for wearing the hijab, but also easily argue this as a reason for covering boobs (and only boobs).

It's all down to how you interpret it. I respect you believe what you do, but I personally think you are misinterpreting it.

A number of reasons (there's lots of academic and casual discourse on it, pretty cool) but one reason is it being a giant middle finger to societal expectations and standards pushed on women by literally everything. Brings more attention to contents of your head instead of what adorns it.

It's not sexualization so much as recognizing that hair is seriously gorgeous lmao and a huge part of physical attractiveness/allure for most people. And that's got no business in Muslims' interactions with others in general.

Then why don't women only cover their head during prayers and rituals?

Men are not allowed to wear shorts under their knees, and they are not allowed to walk around shirtless. Not specifically told, but men are required to be modest too. Islam specifically tells men to lower their gaze when women are around too. Its modesty for both sexes,

What. Men don't ever have to cover their head. What are you talking about?

The scholarly consensus among all major schools of thought is that hijab is required.

Yes, and shitloads of Catholic priests regularly molested kids and when caught were just shuffled somewhere else. It was because of a consensus of opinions that was allowed to happen.

Does that mean the bible said it was alright to diddle kids? Or that people in power decided something would make their constituents more appeased?

Your statement is the equivalent of saying "the politicians all agree that X is the case". Islam as the business is very different from Islam as the religion.

Muslim women were wearing hijab during the prophet Muhammads life time

So my point that it had nothing to do with religion stands?

Yeah, I've wondered about that too, I'm a Muslim and in the Quran, the only thing it really mentions is to cover the bosoms and wear clothing/garments that aren't tight. In history class I learned that Muslims got the hijab idea from the Christian Byzantines.

Yep, look at the early religious christian settlers in America, all their women are covered head to toe.

Frankly I think more schools should have religious education. I went to a Catholic school and they taught us about all religions, in depth going to the beginnings and core beliefs. Not once did they disparage them, but educated us about them.

If more people were educated about other religions I think their hatred would vanish, or diminish.

Yeah, me too. I learn about all faiths in my AP World History class(I just finished this year) and I really think it would help people be less hateful. I found this video a while ago of a lady doing everything she can to eliminate religion(Islam in particular) from classrooms. I was really mad to see people this dumb still existing. Literally everything she was mad at for being taught was what I learned in school. As long as they don't force students to believe in religions, I see no problem with anything going on right now.

I made it two minutes and had to stop. Even if you don't believe in Islam, Mohammad was a very significant historical figure. He came to prominence during the height of Arab culture and enlightenment.

A lot of the ancient Greek texts we have now are because they were translated from Arabic to English.

If I could I'd make everyone learn about other cultures and religions. The more you know the less you fear.

[–]PM_ME_YOUR_A_CUP5 0ポイント1ポイント  (1子コメント)

Wrong. Schools should have ZERO lessons on religion. The schools already waste lessons for that shit each week. If you want to learn about religion, fine, go there in your free time. Visit a church or kneejerk for the pope. The only usefull lessons would be ethic lessons which teach the kids about usefull thoughts and behaviour. There you can learn thinking comprehension (if you aren't smart enough to get it on your own) which you can use around your social life in communication and interaction with other humans. At least that's what they teached us there.

You get teached how to respect other religions there too. But I don't need to know where jesus was born or what nonsense you can find in the bible.

Also other religions tell you to do x-things to be a good human. If you don't you aren't. So they also talk about people not from their religion as bad humans. Also I will for all time and forever lough about people wearing some kind of cloths just because of their religion. I see a reason to not walk around naked. But I see non for wearing protection around your head so no one sees your hair. That's stupid. (Btw I don't tell it to this people because of respect. So I'm just writing down my thoughts here. I also interact with them as I do with anyone else.)

For me wearing this cloths is as if someone has a swastika tattoo on his or her forhead. Same stupidity level. They all killed people for their stupid believes.

Learning about a religion is the same about learning history. You don't view it as religious and it becomes a lesson on theory and beliefs.

As I said I went to a Catholic school and one of the top classes I had was RE, religious education. I was taught about Hindus, Muslims, Buddhists, Maoists, Jews, Protestants and we even touched on South African "witchcraft".

Out of everything I was taught, my religious education course stuck with me. Know the hows/whys/what of another religion was invaluable. It allowed me to be able to respect people of other religions and let me know people think differently from me.

Yeah, meaning, the command came down during a time where women already had a sense of modesty and would wear headscarves, it was the fact that it didn't completely conceal the bosoms/upper chest area...

These verses were enforcing the notion of Hijab, as well as, adding what was commanded by Allah.

There are several saheeh ahadith about the immediate response of the Ansar after the hijab rule was established, how immediately upon hearing the verses, the women of the Ansar proceeded to follow the commandment.

Reference these ahadith (all relevant to the Ayah):

  • Adwa’ al-Bayaan, 6/594-595.
  • Bukhaari, 146; Muslim, 2170.
  • Bukhaari, 4481. Abu Dawood (4102):
  • Shiekh Muhammad Al-Ameen Al-Shanqeeti's commentary on the hadiths and verse 24:31

I never had doubt that Muslim women should wear the hijab for modesty, I just wanted an answer without sarcasm attempting to make me look dumb. Also, just because the Quran says to cover the bosoms doesn't mean that Arab women weren't already doing that. I was just trying to find the closest thing I could to a hijab in the Quran.

That's where I learned the hijab was from and had a discussion with a Muslim girl who swore up and down that it was only an Islamic tradition and was originally an Islamic tradition.

Yeah, she must not know much. Muslims are taught that Mary, mother of Jesus covered her head, so obviously that idea existed before Islam.

[–]conatus_or_coitus 1ポイント2ポイント  (0子コメント)

She might've been misinformed. It is throughout the history of Islam but the head covering predates circa 600AD by a lot.

[–]Just_Look_Around_You 0ポイント1ポイント  (0子コメント)

The entire joke is an allusion to it. How isn't it clear that this post has a lot to do with that?

[–]Transfinite_Entropy 1ポイント2ポイント  (3子コメント)

I find the hijab to be deeply offensive to my beliefs.

Well, they find you drinking alcohol and eating pork, deeply offensive too, but hey keep it to yourself, so long as it aint affecting them or you.

[–]Transfinite_Entropy -1ポイント0ポイント  (1子コメント)

It affects when I have to look at women dressed like that.

You don't. You can look away.

We can't help it. What kind of silly religion has an elephant with 8 arms as a god. I blame obama.

[–]conatus_or_coitus -1ポイント0ポイント  (2子コメント)

You must be a special kind of stupid.

Not as stupid as you if you can take that comment seriously.
