what do you think about transfat people?

…this isn’t a serious question, is it?

Because the concept of “transfat people” is both fatphobic and transphobic at the same time.

The concept of “transfat people” marginalizes TWO OPPRESSED GROUPS AT ONCE.

Calling your thin self a “transfat person” is oppression make-believe. And you know what? This isn’t a game for actual oppressed people.

A term like “transfat” is fucking absurd, a way for privileged people to subvert social justice activism. They aren’t satisfied with just THEIR privilege. No, they want to enjoy their privilege while also appropriating the experience of the oppressed.

So, yeah. That’s what I think of thin people who call themselves “transfat.”

Added: Reader harmalade notes, also, that “transfat” is a term that fat and trans* people sometimes use to identify themselves. So the concept of thin “transfat people” has yet another level of appropriation to it.

Also, this thin “transfat person” concept comes down to mistaking body dysmorphia – which is real – for the kind of dysmorphia trans* people experience. It’s not the same thing. It’s an insult to fat people and trans* folks and the intersection of fat and trans* folks to imply that it is.

  3. harmalade said: Honestly, its even more ridiculous because “transfat” is word that people who are fat and trans use to refer to ourselves.
