For awhile now, there have been murmurings on the internet and within comedy circles that beloved comedian Louis C.K. is a total creep to women, understood to be an open secret that everyone knows but nobody talks about. Louis C.K. is very powerful within the comedy scene, and those who allege that he’s a perv say that everyone is too afraid to speak out about it, because they’re sure doing so would be a career ender. Fear of retribution is a reason many, many sexual assault and harassment victims don’t come forward. This is certainly the case with Bill Cosby’s 40+ victims, many of whom were terrified to come forward because of how powerful Cosby is in Hollywood.
Back in 2012, Gawker published a blind item about a comedian who liked to jerk off in front of female comics, which many theorized was Louis C.K. Then, a couple weeks ago, Defamer wrote about an alleged email exchange between an anonymous tipster and Louis C.K., in which the tipster called Louis out for his behavior towards women. That led to an alleged phone call between the two, which the tipster characterized as Louis “sizing me up” to “find out what I had heard.” The conversation, if you take the tipster’s at his word that it actually occurred, was not particularly substantive, and the two haven’t talked since.
Up until this point, the rumors about Louis C.K.’s behavior towards women have been just that — rumors, whispered about in small circles, but never openly discussed. Today, Death and Taxes draws our attention to a month-old episode of comedian Jen Kirkman’s “I Seem Fun” podcast, in which she describes a pervy comedian that sounds an awful lot like Louis C.K. (Skip ahead to minute 31 above.)
And then I had another guy who is a very famous comic. He is probably at Cosby level at this point. He is lauded as a genius. He is basically a French filmmaker at this point. You know, new material every year. He’s a known perv. And there’s a lockdown on talking about him. His guy friends are standing by him, and you cannot say a bad thing about him. And I’ve been told by people “Well then say it then. Say it if it’s true.” If I say it, my career is over. My manager and my agent have told me that. They didn’t threaten it. They just said to me “You know what Jen, it’s not worth it because you’ll be torn apart. Look at the Cosby women.” And this guy didn’t rape me, but he made a certain difficult decision to go on tour with him really hard. Because I knew if I did, I’d be getting more of the same weird treatment I’d been getting from him. And it was really fucked up, and this person was married. So it was not good, and so I hold a lot of resentment.
I am not personally super familiar with Louis C.K.’s work, but Death and Taxes writer Jordan Frieman is and he notes that Louis is known for producing new material every year and that he is obviously influenced by French new wave cinema. It certainly seems to me that these rumors have legs and that, as Frieman writes, where there’s smoke, there’s probably fire. But until someone is brave enough to come forward and make a direct accusation, what can be done? To be clear, I’m not suggesting that doing so would be easy for any of the alleged victims to put their career on the line, or even that it’s their responsibility to take this rich, powerful comedian to task. It sounds like female comics have passed along this information amongst themselves, so new women on the comedy scene at least know to be on guard where Louis C.K. is concerned. But if the rumors are true and Louis C.K. is vile and abusive to women, I hope one of his friends — who have allegedly been protecting his behavior for years — finally has the courage to stand up and say ENOUGH. Boy, good thing everyone in this comments section is so aggressive about protecting the reputation of a widely famous multi-millionaire! I'm sure a woman who's probably been harassed countless times while pursuing an uncertain career in a wildly misogynistic field is totally making it up and smearing the good name of someone who, literally, could not be more famous. Thanks for protecting power from what potentially might be truth, everybody!

You know who else is a hugely successful comedian, lauded as a "genius" by some, who has become basically a French filmmaker, who has also worked gigs with Jen? Bobcat Goldthwait. I'm not saying it was him because I don't know that. But he also fits the criteria.

Wow. For a site that features an advice column by James Deen to imply that being "pervy" is akin to abuse is pretty damn reckless. If you have reliable information that the comedian did something to someone without their consent, report what it was that they did. If the comedian is Louis CK, report that. Otherwise, you're no better than the worst celebrity rag. Embarrassing. For the author and for The Frisky.

Of all the types of clickbait, this is the sort that's the most vile -- leveling potentially career-damaging accusations against someone without a single iota of proof, or even journalistic research of any kind, before publishing. Add to that, Kirkman herself has said you have it wrong, and yet the piece is still live. You should be ashamed of yourselves.

I still don't understand how anyone can outright say things like this without any on the record proof. No proof is cited. No witnesses even. Nowhere in Jen Kirkman's podcast does she mention a name. Now, don't get me wrong, I'm not protecting or defending Louis CK or anyone who might have done the things alleged, but what stops websites like this from just making up an article about anyone? There are always tons of rumors out there about damn near everyone you can think of. But actual news organizations do not print rumors because, guess what? They're rumors. In this example there are no admitted victims, nobody to go on the record and allege anything. No police reports. I'll be surprised if websites like this do not get sued or threatened lawsuits from Louis CK for slander. This story amounts to "I heard a rumor so let me just throw this out there, so and so is a rapist or exhibitionist, etc." You can't do that.

Here's another thought. If Louis C.K. tells Chris Rock "suck my balls" and Chris laughs, would it be considered sexual harassment if he said the exact same thing to a female comedian? If so, where is the equality in that?
I feel that sexual harassment claims may be way different in comedy than they are in, say, an office. Have you seen the way these guys talk to Sarah Silverman? She is often considered one of the guys -- perhaps this is how male comedians view their female colleagues and thus, standard sexual harassment rules don't apply. This is where lines get a little blurry. Am I condoning sexual harassment under any circumstances? Absolutely not. But I can see where men in comedy may be confused about what constitutes sexual harassment when it's basically their job to talk about sex for a living.
Jen Kirkman has referred to Louis C.K. as her favorite comedian on more than one occasion. I'm willing to bet this is being blown out of proportion, and it's a shame.

Without comment I just want to note that Jen Kirkman objected to the piece you are referencing.

I'm a huge Louis C.K. fan, so I had to do a bit of digging on this. I saw a tweet from Jen to Louie in 2011, congratulating him for some speech he made. As Louie C.K. was three years divorced at the time, I can only assume the alleged incident happened before this tweet. I like to think of female comedians as smart, logical women, and I just can't see a seemingly cool, smart chick tweeting out a congratulations to some "creep" she had been sexually harassed by. She may not have gone around bad-mouthing him to people, but to go out of her way to put on a friendly facade seems disingenuous and not at all what I would expect from someone like her. If she is indeed referring to Louis in her podcast, I'm going to say that she's exaggerating his "weird" behavior, since she was clearly unfazed enough to send out a friendly tweet. Women who have been sexually harassed don't usually remain chummy with the perpetrators. They just don't.
