Is that a blueprint on how to make a slighly larger yearbook?

And probably cost $200.

Mine did cost $200. It wasn't this cool either. 2009

Yikes. I don't know the actual cost because some rich local family always pays for yearbooks for the whole senior class.

That's really nice of them, I was only able to afford to buy it one year. Those yearbooks are way too expensive.

Sad story-- I always had a summer job in order to pay for my yearbook. My parents would always steal my earrings from each summer. I was only able to afford to buy a yearbook my freshmen and sophomore years of high school. I am now estranged from my family. One of the last and final things they did to hurt me when I requested my yearbooks they burned them and sent me the ashes. Edit: does anyone know if you can purchase/obtain a yearbook from your high school? I would need it for '99, '00, '01, and '02.

Who in the hell downvoted you for this? How rude.

Anyway, I googled that. So here's an ehow page about it:

http://www.ehow.com/how_8192006_copies-old-high-school-yearbooks.html

Thank you so much for that article. I grew up in MD and live in CA now. I moved 3,000 miles to get away from my "family" so it may be a little difficult to execute the local routes. I will definitely attempt contacting the publisher. Solid advice.

Get them back by cremating them after death and scattering the ashes in a landfill.

You are awarded two cool points for that suggestion (cool points are not handed out half hazardously). I don't think anyone in my family would even inform me of their passing. But, that idea is clutch.

My high school always had extras from every year, I'd always see former students coming in and buying a copy, even as far back as the late 70s. Very sorry you had parents like that.

Holy shit. I'm so sorry to hear this. Sounds like you had some crazy/awful parents. You should do a Casual AMA, I'm sure it would make people appreciate having normal family, especially with Father's Day coming up.

Glad that you're away from them now, sounds like that is for the best. I mean, seriously...send you the ashes? WTF!

That unfortunately isn't even the half of it. I was hit by a drunk driver October 2nd of 2006. I had a 1% chance of living. I spent a year and a half in the hospital and was in a coma for three months. The night that sealed the fate in terms of the end of my relationship with them, my father had collected every picture taken of me tore them up, threw them in my face and screamed, "you are dead to us. We should have left you on the side of the road to die."

Fortunately, I have a wonderful and loving husband. That stood by me through the dissolve of my relationship with my family. My Uncle walked me down the isle at my wedding. And my family, "by love, not law," is incredible. Some people say blood is thicker than water, but my friends are my family. It's true you can choose your friends but not your family. In a different context that saying takes on a whole new meaning.

Thank you for your advice. It is very healing to talk about it.

Edit: drive to driver

Wow. You must be a really tough person both physically and mentally to have survived the accident and the abuse of your parents. What caused them to act this way?

It's good to hear that things are better for you now, and I'm happy that talking about it helps. If you do decide to do an ama, let me know.

Money. It was all money. They were physically, mentally, and emotionally abusive. As soon I was hit by the drunk driver they saw me as their cash cow.

I was naïve and thought things had changed because they had almost lost their daughter tragically. It was only because they wanted the settlement money. And like most people all I wanted in life was my parents love and approval, even though they are nothing but scumbags. So I looked past all the years of abuse.

May be of no consolation, but, "blood is thicker than water" is widely misused. The original proverb being "the blood of the covenant is thicker than the water of the womb."

Thought to be originated from blood rituals, or between soldiers who had actually spilt blood together in battle. So people saying "blood is thicker than water" imply that you should prioritize family above all. When you see it as its true meaning, it implies your true family is those who will look after you and vice versa, so to speak.

What school? Maybe Reddit can help.

I went to Albert Einstein High School in Kensington, MD. Having such terrible parents my only escape was school (it made me super active) I played field hockey, was on varsity swim team, and played softball. I was on debate and choir as well. I sound like a pretty awful kid, right?

Contact your school, or more specifically the head of the yearbook team. I know my yearbook program kept whatever they didn't sell for future teams to reference. They may not have anything from that far back, but if you explain your circumstances I'm sure they would be willing to try to dig something up.

Are we related? Until very recently, I had no photos or memorabilia from my childhood and teenage years because my mother decided to burn it all in a bathtub. I'm "satan's seed" I guess.

We are estranged and have been for a long while. It hurts, yeah... but not nearly as much as those 18 years of torture.

Wait what? Mine are £20 for the book. Why are they so expensive over there?

Mine weren't nearly that expensive. Jesus

Ours was usually funded via local business ads and the parents of the seniors that would buy sections to write their kid some memoir or something.

Holy fuck $200, that book better come with exclusive offers an free stuff along with it. My year book cost less than $60 and some of the yearbook staff would remove people they didn't like from the year book ( I went to a ghetto school)

I know a kid who they forgot to put into the yearbook. What a waste of $60.

I was in my senior yearbook twice. Once under my own name and another other pic under a slight misspelling of my name

Same! They used a different picture of me as the second misspelled name as well. I think they thought it was a different person.

I was put in the year book 2 times. The reason for that is because they missspelled my last name by one letter.

Mine cost that much in 2002. However, it was full color and we had close to 4,000 students. It was around 500 pages.

$200? Jesus. I dont know 10 kids I went to school with who had families with an extra $200 sitting around.

I think back in 2008 when I graduated my yearbook cost about that. But part of that money was to pay for people who couldn't afford that.

Wow, we didn't have to pay for ours.

First thing that crossed my mind.

$200 ??? Damn.

The yearbook at my hs is like $50 if preorder and $80 if buy normally.

Damn. I spent $35 dollars all 4 years. And they were actually decent quality

Wait what? Ours are free..

[–]PM_ME_UR_BOOBS_MLADY 11ポイント12ポイント  (2子コメント)

My school gave them out for free

That's weird your school gave out another school's yearbook for free.

yeah i was gunna say i think mine was like 60 bucks and that was 15 years ago. not that i bought one because i hated everyone in my school.but i couldnt imagine what this one costs.

The yearbooks at my school are $85 and belong on /r/CrappyDesign.

Is everyone here gunna hate me if I said my yearbook was free

[–]Pm_nudes_4_Drawing 10ポイント11ポイント  (5子コメント)

Mine were free until I learned they include the cost in our tuitions. :/

Probably. Ours were around $80, and honestly their design is crappy too. There was some arrow cutout in the front where you could see through the cover into the first page, but they left s little bit of the actual front cover there at the top and bottom of the arrow and lo and behold: everybody's front cover is bending. Wonderful.

You seem fun

when youre bullied relentlessly by people and the teachers do nothing about it you tend to get a little jaded about school. its ok my life turned out pretty good, but that still doesnt mean ive forgave and forgot.

I get you! We didn't have yearbooks, but why would I want a record of all the bitches that made my life hell? Photos of my friends were enough for me. Didn't even want my shirt autographed.

My school's yearbook was $60 and they spelled school "Schoool"

C'mon, that's coool.

OK... what is it an image of? Is it just a random blueprint? I don't know what I"m looking at. =(

Probably of the school

It clearly is. You can see a track + field and a baseball diamond. I guess the idea is that when you're done looking at the yearbook the heat from your hands holding it will reveal glimpses of the school. Or if you leave it in the sun.

Nearby bank. Equipping a few curious and motivated students with the tools needed to start a life of crime.

You don't recognize it? Wow. Something I actually know. That, my friend are the prints for the Rotunda of the National Archives Building in Washington DC. And you know what you can do with that? That's right. Spoiler

[–]Raxu 2

I think it could be the school.

I wonder how many people will have a black yearbook for the rest of their lives. The rest of their sad unknowing lives.

I'd like to think many of them will be looking back at it in a decade and the heat of their hands reveals a part and gives them a little nostalgic kick.

But in reality, one kid is going to tell EVERYONE thinking they're SOOOOOOOO SMART!

There's no way that this wasn't public knowledge, before during and after it came out.

"We promise there's a good reason you each are paying $50 extra for your yearbooks this year, but you'll have to figure it out yourself."

My school used the same line for tuition increases...

-lights the school on fire trying to find the heat-sensitive ink-

My schools yearbooks are 80 dollars and they don't gave this cool shit.

In a decade, global warming will have permanently revealed the blueprint.

That's pretty much impossible since the heat of their hands will reveal the image underneath

edit: just occurred to me that you might have meant they would never open the yearbook again

Yes, and then they'll move their hands and see the image....

I had a Hypercolor shirt when I was a kid! But then my mom washed it on high heat and broke it. :(

...all you had to do was put it in a plastic bag and put it in the freezer to "reset" it!

NOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!

I don't know why but I believe you

They need to bring those back. Kids are dressing in late 80s early 90s styles already anyway.

My school was the kind of school where a lot of the kids only really ate at school, because that's where the free lunch was. I'm guessing your school isn't that kind of school.

My school was the kind of school where we had 35 plus kids in one classroom, not enough desks, so you had to race to your next class and hope that you didn't spend the period sitting on the floor. And forget about the fucking textbooks.

my school was the type that accepts foodstamps and reused our yearbook pictures for two years in a row, so in all of our senior pictures we look really young. Didn't matter though, our yearbooks where printed in black and white on regular printing paper, the photos where old cell phone quality anyway. Loads of Jpeg. I always felt bad for my friends who had a dark complexion, you could only see their eyes and teeth in most of their pictures, which reminded me of the cat from Alice in wonderland. We didnt go on many class trips or have many extracurricular activities available, so the yearbook committee would occasionally resort to using archived photos of previous student's doing things we can no longer afford. There was also the occasional stock photo of random students doing productive things that they obviously must have found online.

That's pretty cool. My high school actually had an Apple themed yearbook. Every section was labeled iRun, iDrama, iFootball, etc. It was embarassing. This was like 2008 probably.

I think we did too. Something with "i" all over the place. Sometime like '06 or '07.

WMC?

nope. i don't know anything about the yearbook industry, but i guess they sell the templates to multiple schools. which is surprising because this one was just really bad iirc

I was on the year book committee for my middle school. That was one of the options. I campaigned against it to hard. The outside was an iphone. It looked so bad. It lost by three votes.

It turns black when it cools down.

You mean once it goes black ... It goes back?

Wait, that can't be right.

But it starts black.

When you start black, you'll always come back. (Implying that you can go to blue for a short while).

No because if you're blue you'd "da ba de da ba die" if I remember correctly.

Always default to black.

No, it goes back to being black as that is its default state.

It turns black again! This is most likely performed using liquid crystals, the same way some pencils change colors with heat. Based on the starting colors, the heat range to reveal this pattern is probably around 30-35 degrees Celsius

That is way cool. What a great idea.

Many years ago, shortly after the invention of printing, my senior year book won national awards for the unique way it was photographed, had a circus theme to it. Sadly the construction was very poor. The books were falling apart within days.

My Girlfriend works at my our old high school and told me how when the senior class was out early one day to get their yearbooks, there were those who were just sitting around because their families could not afford to buy the books for them. What kind of shit is that! I feel so bad for them, this economy drains so much from those that have little to begin with. She said there were those who couldn't afford the senior pictures so they wouldn't even be included in the yearbook. That blows. Why is it so necessary to have senior pictures that are done by Lifetime when (i would figure) every school has a modern camera somewhere. All these cameras are digital and over at least 10 megapixel. How hard is it to take pictures of all students at no flipping cost to the students. WTF!

  1. That is really freaking cool. Never seen that before!
  2. That blueprint is from istockphoto and I used it in a design about 12 years ago.

THAT IS BLOODY AWESOME!!! I wish they did that at our school!

This is the type of shit that wins yearbook awards. It's crazy, but true— there is a very competitive high school yearbook industry, where yearbook advisors submit their best work (designs, photography, layout, etc.) for review in national competitions. It's pretty fascinating, especially for high school teachers that have been doing it for awhile.

Depends on when you bought it. I know when I was on yearbook staff, at the start of the year it was like 30 bucks. End of the year is like 50. This little printing trick would probably add 5-10 bucks onto each book easily.

You say that but having that to look back one is kind of cool as you get older. Memories tend to get fuzzy over the years pictures stay sharp.
