I love seeing people's reactions to sleepers. If I ever have enough disposable income to build a sleeper like that I'm so doing it.

Finally a real sleeper.

I'm so sick of everyone posting like, a modded mustang, and calling it a sleeper.

When I was a kid my friends dad turned an 80s station wagon (for the life of me I can't remember the damn model, but like the really long ones that pretty much had a couch as a back seat) into a sleeper but we didn't know it was until he showed us one day.

We went on a trip to a water park and he was driving normal, then this acura rides his bumper for a few hundred feet and blows past us. He goes "you guys wanna see something cool?".....then blows the acura out of the water. It was pretty cool.

If I had the money I'd turn my sad 4 cylinder fiesta into a monster. Just because I feel like if you get blown out by a fucking fiesta....that's demoralizing

Was it a Cutlass Cruiser?

A wood-panel cutlass wagon is actually my dream car. There's one locally that I'm trying to see again to leave a note on his windshield to ask to buy it.

Has that actually happened?

Elsewhere in this thread some guy is talking about how his Audi is a sleeper.

Buddy, you're driving an Audi. No one looks at it and is surprised when it blows the doors off you.

depends on the year/condition

nobody would look twice at an old beat up 100

another good sleeper - with viper engine

That's not quite as much of a sleeper as some of the others. You just don't see battered farm trucks of that vintage on the road anymore. Even with the patina, if it's running, I assume it has been breathed on at least a little. Granted, a Viper engine is pretty extreme, but it still wouldn't be a complete surprise to see it take off. Now something like a '91 F-150 in similar condition with a Viper engine would be a true sleeper.

I have plans to put a Subaru STI engine in a 98 outback. Sleeper battlewagon.

What's a sleeper?

Sleeper, in street racing term, is a car that looks like something your great grandmother would drive but would smoke 99% of vehicles on the road.

Can someone explain the appeal of them? Is it to embarrass unsuspecting guys in their Chargers?

It basically is yes, and to surprise people in an amusing and fun sort of way.

Just like the guy in the video.

You don't always need a sleeper too. My friend and I drove a debadged Twin Turbo 300zx back in 2008 or something. It was when the stock 12.5 second mustang came out. Anyway, we weren't doing 12.5 track times, but easily hitting 13s and high 12s. All street legal. Constantly we would have cars pull up and act like they were fast (because stock 3000zx non turbos are basically turtles) and would get smoked.

Favorite experience was someone filming our race from the passenger seat of their car. They rolled up laughing, revving their engine, and video taping our car. So we take off at the green light, and as we hit about 3rd gear we just fly past them. The passenger slowly lowers the camera in the car as we shoot away. I could taste the increase in salt content in the air from their tears.

300zx is the precursor to nissans 350z and comes with twin turbos, afaik there wasn't badging for the TT or it was common to not have it. My grandparents 300zx was TT w/o badging.

aka 300zx was entirely billed as a sports car and doesnt qualify for sleeper category unless you're going to throw a viper engine in it

A sleeper's purpose is about 50% to show off innovative mechanic work and 50% to embarrass people who buy nice cars and rev their engines at stop lights.

Don't forget the portion that keeps the cops off your ass when you are just driving normally. Tuners that make their car look like a carnival ride stick out like a sore thumb.

It's hilarious; there's not much else to explain.

Transcribing live:

A: "One more time?"

B: "Yeah yeah, one more, so that he "gives it" again (i.e. provoking the Chevrolet to accelerate again)

B: "Nah, better go straight and swoop in from there."

B: "That is one crazy Chevrolet, fuck!"

B: "AAAA! Fucking aye!" *unintelligible swearing*

B: "Bro, he is fucking crazy! He is crazy, fuck!"

A: "Why do you think the car is "charged"?" (some racing term, maybe, not sure)

B: "Come on, let's do it one more time."

B: An expression which basically boils down to "Well this is apparently a thing, fuck!", i.e. acknowledging that this is actually happening.

B: Well? Give it some more.

B: paraphrasing "Holy shit, holy shit, he's fast! Just a fucking insane car, did you see that?! Just holy shit" (Офигеть, is basically to lose one's mind or to be shocked, so when one says "ОФИГЕТЬ!" it's pretty equal to saying any expletive in awe)

B: "And we were already doing 200km/h ourselves, right?"

A: "Yeah"

B: "Insane"

A: "Fuck, did you see it? It was like *poof!* and he's gone!"

B: "Yeah, he's just crazy! Just damn!"

Charged probably refers to supercharged (could also be turbocharged I guess). My coworker has a 2010 Corvette Z06 that is supercharged and it puts down 800 hp at the wheels. Thing is nuts.

I'm not good with under the hood stuff but here is his engine bay - maybe you can tell from this.

Supercharger is the round housing at the front of the bottom cylinder bank. Supercharger = belt driven, turbocharger = exhaust driven. You can see the belt between the compressor housing and the valve cover.

Thank you for the translation

Charged refers to super or turbo charged, a way to give a car more power by cramming additional air into the cylinder to allow more fuel as well

"he's insane!"

"let's do it again"

"that car is insane! insane!"

Holy shit. That's the speed that it walks away from a Lambo at full throttle... wow.

My favorite is a video where two kids in an Evo pull up to a Lingenfelter Corvette. They keep trying to get a response from the vette but tell each other it's probably just an old man who is too afraid to actually push his own car. All of the sudden, the most ungodly roar erupts from the vette as it flashes by the passenger window. They catch up to it at the next light and happily take an ass whipping.

Edit: Even better. It's not an Evo, it's a modified Eagle Talon Source

I remember this video. Love the sound of that thing sucking in air right as he mashes on it.

I love the simultaneous pants shitting at the vette's first pull. XD

Hey guys! Ooh, Lambo huh? Alright! Welp, seeya later.

That Vette is definitely beefed up. But to be fair, a newer stock Z06 could challenge or beat a lot of Lamborghini's. Not in that fashion though, that thing is mean!

[–]Philo_T_Farnsworth 52ポイント53ポイント  (19子コメント)

A lot of people don't realize how fast a car with a modern (i.e. LS1 or newer) GM small block V8 is, especially from a roll. I used to own a 2001 Firebird with an LS1 and it never ceased to amaze me how fast it could go from 70-130. Fourth gear maxed out somewhere around there, so the script was - downshift into fourth, hit the gas, rocket to the moooooooon!

This is, not coincidentally, why LS1 swaps are so popular in a lot of cars.

a lot of cars.

Not just cars! After grad school I have every intention of putting a LS1 into my TJ.

In all seriousness, you can say whatever you want about the rest of Chevrolet, but their motors are amazing.

Can't imagine the latest ones would even need much modification.

Maybe I'm just naive, but I feel like most people who enjoy this type of recreational, spur-of-the-moment drag racing are super friendly about it. One time I was stopped at a red light with my window rolled down, and there were two people my age in the car next to me with their window rolled down. We made eye contact and then they asked me in the friendliest, most excited way, "Hey dude, you wanna race???" I unfortunately had to tell them that my old shitty Honda wouldn't be able to handle it, but they were still super nice and just said, "Ahh, no big deal." Again, maybe I'm just naive, and maybe that was a bit of an anomaly, but it made me look at drag racing in a totally different way.

I was in a car with some friends at a red light in a really shitty car (Twingo or something) and next to us was a similiar shitty car and we both agreed to race to the next red light. The race was fun but as we stood at the next red light the guys in the car next to us burst out laughing and we were confused at first but then he just held up his gear stick.

Something like that happened to me as well. My friend has a Porsche and he raced against a souped up old Rusty car for fun knowing we'd lose.

The guy catches up to us and we look over to see he's holding his steering wheel in his hand. Not attached to the car. And he smiles at us and made like an offering gesture at is with it, then put it back on.

All while going like 60MPH

That was the funniest thing I've seen on the road ever

still confused...why were they laughing?

Because the other car's gear stick literally came off during the race.

When I was younger, my dad and I restored a Datsun 260Z.

A few months after we were done, we took it out for a ride. We got to an intersection, he did the typical "wiggle it back and forth, make sure it's in neutral" thing before putting it in first. But it didn't grab first. Nope, instead, the shifter came out in his hand.

He pulled it straight up and looked at me with the dopiest of looks. My dad was (and still is) good for that.

We managed to push it off to the side of the road. While we tried to figure out what to do. Went in to a hobby shop that happened to be at that intersection for about 20 minutes. Then a cop just happened to come in (he was shopping, there was nothing else going on), and we told him about what happened. He held up the intersection for us, and after about maybe 20 seconds in the intersection I was able to spot the cotter pin that held the shifter in place.

The hobby shop, as it would turn out, didn't sell cotter pins. I don't know why we didn't think of just walking to the Ace Hardware a couple blocks away and buying one. Maybe we didn't realize the shifter was held in place by a cotter pin? I don't recall removing the shifter when we worked on the car, but I know for sure we took out the transmission and engine as part of it (and replaced the clutch and mounts), so it must've been removed at some point.

I've never had eagle-eyes quite like that before. I don't think I could ever find a cotter pin in the middle of an intersection in under 20 seconds ever again.

Around 1998 or so I was in my 1995 Ford Probe GT and I pulled out onto a two-lane road and ended up next to a Mitsubishi Eclipse with a big wing on the back. I lined up next to him and downshifted, he bit, and away we went. I pulled about 4 car lengths on him and then the road merged to one lane. When we stopped at a red light I saw him get out of his car and walk up to mine, and I thought he wanted to talk cars, so I put down the window. He pulled out a knife and threatened to stab me in the neck. Some people are just assholes that make everything about winning and can't handle losing I guess.

Let me guess, you pulled out your piece and kindly told him to return to his vehicle?

I hope so, what a douche-canoe.

No, actually I apologized and said I thought he just wanted to have some fun, no disrespect intended. I think he realized he was being an ass at that point. He put the knife away and walked back to his car without saying a word.

"Being an ass" = threatening to murder you? You're a pretty laid back guy.

Also, I used to have a 93 MX6 with the V6, essentially the same thing as a Probe. Favortie car I've ever owned.

Why the hell didn't you call the police? This guy threatened to fucking kill you. He should be in prison.

Absolutely. Back when the Ford GT first came out about 10 years ago I was cruising around town with a friend in my Grand Cherokee. A brand new GT with dealer plates pulled up next to us at a light. I revved at him, rolled down my window and said "wanna go???" about to shit my pants from excitement.

Light turns green and we hit it. That car made the most wonderful roar with took off like a Saturn V rocket with zero drama. I caught up to him at the next light, we gave each other a grinning thumbs-up, and went our separate ways.

One of my best driving experiences ever. Car guys are typically good guys, regardless of what they drive.

It's not even really racing most of the time.

Once, when I let my buddy drive my Elise an Evo with anti-lag came up along side to play. The Evo would have dusted us if he wanted to, but we just stayed together making a lot of noise in a tunnel. After a few minutes we parted ways with a smile and a wave.

I'm a car guy. Sometimes when you see a nice car(M5/CTS-V/CORVETTE) you never really know if the driver is a "car guy" or just a "guy with a nice car".

But when I see someone drive by in a Elise, you know just that guy is a car guy. Nobody buys a Elise if they are not deep into cars. So I ussually pull up next to them, wave, etc.

Plus they are the type of guys who won't do shit on the streets.

When I was in my late teens, I had a V8 mustang.

I pulled up to a red light and a minivan pulled up next to me and revved its engine. It was packed to the brim with a family and all their luggage.

So the light turns green and he chirps tires off the line and I let him get a little ahead then blow by him and his family.

When I slow back down to a normal speed, the van pulls up and they were all enjoying the fuck out of it. Gave me a thumbs up and waved, all smiles.

I like to think that I made a long, arduous road trip exciting for that family, if only for a little while.

oh god that torque-steer and compressor surge/valve flutter brings me back to when I used to run my little 4cyl turbo accord. Nothing quite like a care with way too much boost and little to no way to translate it to the ground.

    That's amazing.

Still I don't understand where you get parts for something like that. Don't you basically have to change the entire drivetrain? And do they even make parts that can handle that kind of power, or does everything have to be custom fabricated?

I wonder how much this thing cost.

I own an electric smart car, and that's something of a 'Q' car (that's what we call it over here).

The standard smart car is pretty slow, but the electric has a shitload of torque, and the pull from zero is incredible.

After the night shift when the roads are quiet, I often race other cars from the lights and have done pretty well. Great acceleration and no gears, has embarrassed a good few sports cars.

That massive amounts of instant torque from the electric is why I'm surprised more sleepers aren't mild hybrids. Definitely something I want to do.

I do quite a bit of drag racing at the local quarter mile strip and almost everyone who uses slicks on a streetable car/truck has a set of wheels w/ slicks that they mount when they get to the track. They take them off before they leave. If you saw this truck or my car on the street we'd have regular wheels/tires on.

Audi rs6 (twin turbo v8), with a DTM tune, easily over 500hp. Raised or eliminated speed governor on the audi, bike is gear limited to about that speed while the audi isnt.

Modern 1000cc+ bikes can easily get above that, sadly they are limited by legal agreement to ~299km/h.

In 2000, fears of a European regulatory backlash or import ban led to an informal agreement between the Japanese and European manufacturers to govern the top speed of their motorcycles at an arbitrary limit.

...and to think there are people who put turbo on 1300 cc Hayabusa. Here's how it looks, if you are wondering.

There is a german series called "Wolf im Schafspelz" which is wolf dressed like a sheep?

So this series is about exactly those sleepers and a dude who covers his high end cars like grandpas car or a family car, goes on the left lane on the autobahn and goes like 120 km/h until somone challenges him to pass the lane. He then just pushes his car to 250-300 kmh and laughes his ass off ;)

    you can find those here:

This guy's Opel isn't really that fast though... Sure it has a top speed of 250+, but the acceleration isn't that great. If that Porsche put the pedal to the floor it could've kept up.

Not to mention a BMW M6 is not a wolf in sheep's clothing, it's a fucking wolf without any intention to hide. So don't really get this guy, only driving 120 km/h in the most left lane, blocking the autobahn.... of course people start blinking and then he drives away with a car that has over 500 horse power which anyone can tell by the 4 exhaust pipes and the M6 sign on the back... ? Good job!

For a VW enthusiast any clean looking Mk1 Rabbit is not a sleeper. They are more likely to be modded under the hood than not and you can put 200 HP for next to no money without needing to do much other than drop a different VW engine in it right onto the stock mounts.

I was involved in a street racing incident. The guy I was racing against crashed into another car. He was hurt pretty bad, I lost my licence for 2 years and had to do 6 months community service.Dont street race people, its not worth it.

Man, I'm having an old man, get off my lawn moment in my mid-20's... All I could think was how dangerous and irresponsible driving like that is... (moderate sigh)

That could easily be a section of autobahn with no speed limit, too. The video is in German.

it is my understanding that reckless driving like street racing is illegal on Z autoban too.

You may drive as fast as you possibly can but you may not overtake another car on the right side and you have to keep a certain distance to the car infront of you.
Other than that you may also not harm anybody obviously but yeah these rules apply to every country I would assume (as long as there is right-side-driving aka the only way of driving).
So the only difference is the unlimited speed really.

But yea you're right. Races aren't allowed.

also: it's Autobahn (with an h).

Had a '99 Hayabusa once, pulled alongside a ferrari 430 on the motorway and misread the signals, guy rapidly disappeared in the mirrors. He wasn't racing. Felt like a proper bellend.

There's some possibility he intentionally led you on as if he was going to race just to have a little chuckle at your expense as you shot off into the distance.

I may or may not have done this. Several times. Apparently around my town a new edge mustang is enough to draw in the racer types.

I remember being stopped at a traffic light and this brand new shiny corvette pulled up next to me. At the time, I was driving a 88 B series Mazda pickup truck and decided to rev my engine at him for shits n giggles. He looked over at me and burst out laughing and revved his engine to signal we're racing.

I gave it my all (I putted forward so miserably) and he (obviously) smoked me. He thought it was the funniest thing in the world, and now we've been married for 6 years.
