Why would that even be something to lie about? Is this trendy?

My thoughts exactly. It's like taking a picture of a tennis ball with the caption "Tennis Ball on a Wednesday" when it's really on a Saturday. No one gave a fuck about the picture even if you were telling the truth.

Fuck, now I look like an idiot for retweeting the Tennis Ball on a Wednesday picture! You just has to fucking tell them, didn't you?!

Cats on a Wednesday, kittens on a Tuesday.

Wrong. We wear pink on Thursday.

No one gives a fuck? You can bet your ass that if you posted a picture to reddit called "Tennis Ball on a Wednesday", the top comment would be a thread calling out OP for being a lying karma whore, and deducing the actual calendar date from the sun's position and shadow angles to be a Saturday.

/r/quityourbullshit

EDIT: Wait, goddamit, we are there.

Close. You'll get it next time, bud.

What if there was a sub sort of like r/catsstandingup where the only allowed comments were the subreddit link?

Then someone points out that its a brand of tennis ball only available in Australia, meaning those calculations are wrong because they were done assuming it was North America

Then OP states that they got the ball from an Australian friend, and Redditors deduce OP is making it all up because the reason we're on this website is because none of us have friends.

Louisiana 1948-

"Dude there's literally a black girl and a white guy holding hands in broad daylight, why you always lying?"

Jokes on you buddy we still don't allow that /s

You joke, but Louisiana is pretty fucking racist. I love Louisianna, but just about everyone I've met there uses the word "nigger" like its the word "the".

Oh yea, then how the do they say "the nigger"? got him

Look who's leaving, all the black people!

What are you? A college founder?

I'm from Utah, very white, I visited Shreveport a few years ago and was shocked at the segregation and how racist people were, my real estate agent told me "this house is cheaper cause niggers lived here" she seemed like a nice lady then she dropped that on me, went to the sand bar and got drunk, super friendly and the bouncer told me to be careful of "niggers on the street, don't be too nice " I felt like I stepped back 50 years and I was kinda uncomfortable with all the tension, thankfully I met cool people of all backgrounds and had a good time, didn't move there but would like to one day ...I mean drive through liquor!!!

Drive through liquor in other places too

True, but I currently live in utah, that's not allowed and crazy to think about, we are sheltered here lol

I saw SLC Punk, I'm pretty much an expert on all things Utah.

Oh good, please judge utah for 20 years ago lol jk...lots of that movie still holds true, we are angry and not fun when we are angry :)

It's not that bad

It kinda is. I don't think I've been in Louisianna for more than 20 minute without hearing a racial slur. I genuinely wish that was an exaggeration, but it's not.

Louisiana 2018-

"Dude there's literally a black guy and a white guy holding hands in broad daylight, why aren't you lynching?"

Corrected because Jindal

I'm always happy to contribute to a laugh. Have a good one, yourself!

I would be actually interested if the Tennis Ball was actually filmed on a new unknown day of the week.

My theory is that they see it somewhere else and repost it without logically analyzing it.

If you see it online it doesn't mean it's true. Everyone lies all the time online including me.

Anything you see online is always a lie.

I can understand but it might actually look cool if it was taken from 1979.

Some people just want to watch the world burn

People make shit up on reddit all the time /shrug

all the damn time, too. but when tumblr does it it's bad.

If only there was a sub that could be used to call out such bullshit like that...

But on a more serious tone, I think this is more about laughing at just how petty this lie is. Why is that even remotely necessary to lie about?

since people who fancy themselves "artsy bohemian free spirit" types have a hard-on for stuff from the 60s and 70s, since the period is seen (by people who weren't even alive for the 80s, let alone either of those decades) as this kind of magical time of bearded dudes and artsy chicks living peacefully in vans and on communes, ignoring the fact that modern mainstream society was also at its most ridiculously conservative (i.e., everyone who wasn't a hippie hated hippies) during the time (and also ignoring all the actual hard work needed to maintain such a lifestyle). it's comparable to me taking a photo of my neighborhood, slapping a ridiculous neon pink/blue filter on it, and posting it as "detroit, 1985" to appeal to all the fans of the "neo 80s" aesthetic.

now, all that being said, it's entirely possible poe's law is in effect here. tumblr, as a community, is fond of calling out its own bullshit; it's very likely the plan was to caption an obviously-modern grocery store as "1979" and see how many notes it racked up before the original poster laughed and called them out on their blind reposting.

People just want to share interesting content. If that really was a 70's grocery store, I would have thought it was kinda cool to see.

People lie about this for the same reason Confession Bear and TIFU exist.

I always thought TIFU was actually meant for made up stories but I'm pretty cynical and don't believe much of anything (looking at you reality shows).

It's always some ridiculous over-detailed stories like "TIFU when I was at my grandmas funeral. They were slowly lowering the casket into the grave when I noticed the rusted bolts on the hoist were starting to crack. I went to catch the side of the casket that was falling which led to the casket tipping and dropping my poor grandma into a dirt hole with giant worms everywhere. I ended up falling into the hole just as my grandmas dress blew up and I happened to land balls deep into my own grandmother while my whole family watched."

So they can have something original to present to everyone. If you don't have something original, fake it 'till you make it.

Funny thing, I'm browsing all and rright below this is a /r/HistoryPorn pic of a guy in a grocery store.

/r/historyporn where a post cant reach the front page without 5 mods commenting and tagging it.

Yeah but thats actually an interesting post

I mean yeah the title and all but the picture itself was a man looking at a grocery store aisle. Its super shitty as is this one.

Also. Why is it after midnight?

Have you ever been on Tumblr before?

If it isn't lying about something, then it's victimizing nothing.

I've been on Tumblr. It's mostly normal people, tbh. The people who say this, in my experience, have no actual experience with Tumblr and have only seen /r/TumblrInAction.

I've used Tumblr for a few months now and I've never seen any of that feminism, SJW junk that is so frequently shared on reddit. It all depends on who you follow and what you're interested in

Yea, it must be trendy. Considering that every other post on reddit/internet is like this.

I'd guess that the one who posted it was uninformed. Usually people don't try to lie, like someone giving you a tip and not understanding that it's actually wrong when they're trying to be nice.

I thought of it more like a joke. It's better delivery than saying "hey this store looks straight out of the 70's!"

I think the idea was that nowadays grocery stores are pretty much always busy, at all hours of the night? That's my best guess.

I thought it was the decor and lighting. I've done a lot of late night grocery shopping, and it's usually pretty dead unless it's a weekend.

Kind of sepia-ish? Must be from 1979

Probably they're half right... Since the store does look pretty dated.

It looks dated but that's Piggly Wiggly for you. The photographer said this picture was taken in 2014.

Seems they took note of the Powerade comment and upped their bullshit game

there are a couple of boxes of Bubba burgers in the middle of the second shelf from the top which weren't released until 2000 so they still should quit their bullshit. (I can't actually read the label but the box color is very distinctive)

edit: fixed some grammar and added image of Bubba box for reference

[–]that_random_potato 28ポイント29ポイント  (5子コメント)

get ready for [picture was made in 2001]

But the Powerade green flavor is melon and not green squall, so it's from the last 5 years.

[–]that_random_potato 10ポイント11ポイント  (3子コメント)

[picture was made in 2011]

Buuuuuut... the photographer said it was taken in 2014!

[–]that_random_potato 12ポイント13ポイント  (1子コメント)

Is the photographer a cis male? Therefore he is automatically a liar whose only want is to oppress trans womyn™. /s

[–]Leofus 4

They still forgot to remove the security camera.

i don't see a difference..?

Kinda what our Piggly Wiggly looks like, but it was a different store before that. No idea when it was built but it looks about that age and carries so much nostalgia. They have these jumbo heating things above the front doors and going into the store in winter feels like the sweetest piece of heaven. The store may smell funny and have questionably old merchandise, but no other grocery store treats me that well at the entrance in winter.

So it's true, every Piggly Wiggly smells funny! I thought it was just ours that smelled like kerosene.

who the fuck tjought Piggly Wiggly was a good business name?

TIL Piggly Wiggly is a real store. Only hearing it in that 70's show, it sounded made up.

I don't remember it in that show either, I thought it was a new reddit joke

That Piggly Wiggly is a gleaming paragon of modernity compared to the one in my hometown. I could probably pass it off as a 1940s grocery store on Tumblr. Still not sure why Tumblr gives a fuck.

I promise that's Harris Teeter. I work there, I see those exact coolers many hours a day

Definitely a Pig. Looks almost exactly like one I worked at in high school, even has the Pig Wig styrofoam coolers on the top of the coolers

It's funny though... the colors are all wrong for the 70s anyway. If it looks like any era, it would be the mid to late 80s.

Pretty sure I see a security camera at the top right of that shot too. Must have been some really cutting edge tech, and some really fucking expensive groceries to need it.

[–]I_AM_STARBURNS_AMA 44ポイント45ポイント  (10子コメント)

Not only is that Powerade, which gives us a general timeline, but that one on the bottom is recognizable as the current green flavor, "Melon." Melon is less than five years old (I think). I definitely know the green color during my baseball days was Green Squall, as it was my favorite and I am still bitter that they stopped making it. So yeah this picture is quite recent.

Ah, green squall. I had forgotten that flavor.

Now I too am bitter.

Edit: also who the FUCK decided to remove lime (the best flavor) from original Skittles and replace it with green fucking apple and they STILL CALL IT ORIGINAL FLAVOR!

[–]Jower 1

Green apple tastes disgusting

I just don't buy skittles anymore. I refuse to buy it under false pretense that it's still original and have to pick out the ones I don't like.

[–]long_wang_big_balls 1ポイント2ポイント  (1子コメント)

You know ya Powerade, buddy!

[–]I_AM_STARBURNS_AMA 0ポイント1ポイント  (0子コメント)

a lifetime of baseball dugouts has led to an infinite (and useless outside of Reddit) knowledge of Powerade, Sour Punch Straws, Sunflower Seeds, Bubblegum, and Tobacco

Still true.

It's after midnight, 1979. Every moment since the first midnight of 1979 counts.

From the photographer's tumblr:

"TO EVERYONE:

It was a Piggly Wiggly in Georgia, i’m so sick of looking at it and hearing everyone arguing about it, it’s just a grocery store, appreciate the picture, don’t fight about stupid people miscaptioning it or try to disprove it or trying make yourself look smarter or more cultured because you can check a wikipedia page. The amount of people who have said “omg powerade was introduced in 1988, this is so stupid, why are they lying” is actually starting to make me physically sick and I hope it stops but I really don’t think it will because people on here for some reason find some sick pleasure in being right. All you have to do find out the truth about the picture is click on the source and look on the original post and you’ll see that it was just a picture of a grocery store I took. That’s it. No dates, no time frames, no lying, no fuss. Just a picture of a grocery store that has somehow spiraled into a miscaptioned post where people argue and supposedly disprove each other. It’s really childish and immature of everyone who’s participated and I sincerely hope they can all sort it out, click on the source, and just appreciate the picture for what it is, it’s just a grocery store picture taken on one of my film cameras and it doesn’t have any filters or editing on it and it’s not romantic and it’s not pale or glow or indie or any of the other stupid blog themes or “aesthetics” you can conform to. So please everyone stop with the fact checking and the useless postbusting, just click the source and you’ll be fine. Thank you all"

This is from tumblr. If someone "likes" or favorites your post, that could count as a note. If someone wants to reply to your post, they have to reblog it, which counts as another note too. If you get a lot of notes on a single post it's because a lot of people liked it.

This is why reddit is better than tumblr. No one ever lies on this site.

i dont get the purpose of the picture

Me neither. Even if this were taken in 1979, is there something different or special in this picture?

The original blog is titled "vintagepopcult", so I'm guessing showing retro stuff is the whole point of the blog.

Which could be cool, if it was actual distinctive stuff. And with non-lying captions.

It's vintage (It's really trendy with teens I guess idk)

I can see value in emulating old photo styles. There's a certain nostalgia you get when you see old photos that you just don't get any more. But if you're actively going for that look it'll probably come off anachronistic.

I think that the OP (tumblr poster) was trying to show a simpler time (kinda like /r/lewronggeneration) when you could go somewhere after midnight and it be practically empty vs now, when everyone's running around and no one enjoys their solitairity (if that's a word).

Source - I'm a teenage girl and know a lot of people that think like that. I don't really get it, personally..

[–]wizards_upon_dragons 2ポイント3ポイント  (0子コメント)

That's probably what they were doing, but much fewer places were actually open to go shop at after midnight. It wasn't til Walmart was open 24hr everywhere that other grocery stores followed suit

I'm guessing it was some half ass attempt at that "simpler time" stuff people like to bring up. "Look how empty it is! People were home with their families! Technology and greed has ruined us all! Dae the good old days?!"

It's a grocery store.

that photography looks skilled. i ain't no photographer pro but the simplicity of the picture is pleasing

My DeLorean runs on Powerade, I don't see the problem here.

Seeing as that specific red handled Styrofoam coolers with the harris teeter logo on the front wasn't introduced until like 8 years ago, then yea this definitely isn't retro by no aspect.

So little to read; so much satisfaction.

Original post would be prime material for /r/shitpost; I don't even see how that would be interesting. It's an empty supermarket, it's not like anything is different after midnight.

Did you know that something a single person posts does not represent the entire population of the site?

Tumblr isn't trying to be retro, some misinformed person or attention whore is.

Should I go post "Reddit trying to be womanizers" and link to the red pill?

The sad thing is, the vocal and negative minority is what people usually see the website as. Most people on Reddit are nice people who just want to see what's on the site. Most people on Tumblr are nice people that just want to see what's on the site. I wish people would stop hating each other and enjoy the better parts of both websites.

Is it just me or does this look exactly like the final scene from Fantastic Mr. Fox?

[–]jeff_from_antarctica 2ポイント3ポイント  (0子コメント)

Honestly the store looks a bit outdated, thus vintage, but you'd have to be a huge asshole to lie and say this was from 1979.

This actually looks identical to a grocery store i was at in south carolina like 2 years ago. Maybe its a chain store?

*Edit- oh yeah! It was a piggly wiggleys.

Isn't it from Cashback movie?

Forget the Poweraid, refrigeration aisles with doors like those are from within the last decade.

not to mention that surveillance camera in the top right hand side and the jimmy dean microwavable biscuits. I mean just look at the food on the back shelf.

I work in a supermarket and the first thing I noticed was the fact that that's current day breakfast meat packaging in the back.

Also, to the parent comment... I'm 25 and there have been doors like that as long as I can remember, so they've been around at least 15-20 years. Maybe they weren't around in the 70's, but they've been around well over a decade.

According to Wikipedia this bottle type (sport grip) wasn't used until 2002.

Picture is no more than 13 years old. Much like the child that took the picture.

The actual photographer didn't write that caption. It was some kid who wanted the picture to fit their cool retro blog. The photographer responded and said the picture was taken in 2014.

Not only that, that's a fairly recent (as in, within the last 10 years) bottle design.

Looks like the interior of a Food Lion store.

Did anyone else feel compelled to look up Powerade to see when it came out?

I bet it wasn't even after midnight.

what's even more annoying is that absolutely nothing is in focus.

People say literally too much these days. It was completely unnecessary in that context and it annoys me.

I know the Powerade is there, it right in the picture!
