This is absolutely beautiful! Wish my hands were steady enough to recreate this as a henna design on my hands

This is a stunning work of art. I can't imagine the effort and time that OP took to meticulously paint all of the beautiful intricacies.

That being said, from a neutral standpoint, I want to address the downvoted comments at the end of the thread. I am surprised and disappointed to see that some people's opinions have been hidden away. Downvotes are not for disagreeing with someone's opinion. Honestly, I can see how this can be cultural appropriation as appropriation is when one takes a symbol of someone else's culture simply as a form of expression and satisfaction. That imbalance of power between the historically colonized and colonizer is in fact a privilege that minorities do not have. The fact that opinions of commenters (who themselves represent the culture OP is expressing) have been disregarded and discredited is something to think about.

But again, OP perhaps may have some relation to the culture in question, which is why I can see why some people might disagree. But please don't think that the cries of appropriation were supposed to be insulting- it is rather something to think about and take into consideration.

I understand your point, but I also wanted to chime in and say that some people might also have differing opinions about relevance of this discussion to the post.

Ringlight always sabotagin' me

[–]unsolicited_critique 9ポイント10ポイント  (0子コメント)

Home-made ringlight, from the catchlights? Gives a good high-fashion look with the wraparound light. Focus is spot on for the face, depth of field is deep enough to keep some detail in the neck and clavicles. Forehead cut off and lots of negative space on the left, so this could have been tried as a vertical too.

Overall, very good.

Guys, I know this is beautiful and artistry and all that but please don't ignore that it's appropriative of Indian culture. OP is very talented but I wish she would channel that talent into less racist work.

Edit: Seriously? Burying this? Yes, please continue to silence us, just like your ancestors have been doing for generations. L o l.

[–]DDJello 39ポイント40ポイント  (0子コメント)

I think its sad that we live in a world where we cant appreciate and draw inspiration from another culture without fear of being called a racist. OP has simply done something beautiful and to label her potentially racist seems extreme to me, show me a piece of artwork with hateful intentions behind it and I will gladly boycott the artist. I see no cruelty behind what OP has done.

Racist? How in the world is it racist?

It's not racist to appreciate that culture, you're right in that regard, but that analogy is not accurate.

The thing that makes this wrong is the coloniser/colonised relationship. US imperialism forces other cultures to conform to their culture while they steal the culture of the colonised for no other reason than "it's beautiful".

    [–]shart_attack 24ポイント25ポイント  (2子コメント)

The strange thing for me is that it lumps all (white) imperialists together. There's a clear division between people who think others should abandon their cultural heritage (ie. American melting pot mentality) vs. those who appreciate diverse cultural heritage (ie. Canadian mosaic mentality).

What if you're the type of person who would encourage US Desi girls to stick to their roots to whatever capacity they wish? What if you actively call out racists who make fucked up comments both in relation to this issue and in general? Is there any point at which you can take aesthetic inspiration from other cultures without being considered an imperialist and a colonizer? Is engaging in cultural exchange inevitably racist when it involves a white person?

Why is longing for a two-way cultural exchange racist, when it's the one-way cultural exchange that's desired by racists?

Why is longing for diverse expressions of culture racist, when it's the expression of only white culture that's desired by racists?

I've read about colonialism and privilege, but nothing I've read has sufficiently answered all of my questions and that makes me feel like an asshole, sorry for having tons to learn still.

It's still really hard for me to get behind a cultural critique that seems to label all white people as imperialist by virtue of skin colour (what about Nordic countries resisting Russian imperialism?) while white-washing imperialism/colonialism (what about Japan/the majority of history?).

    [–]st0nehands 4ポイント5ポイント  (1子コメント)

I agree with you that this is a very complicated issue! As somebody who is only half-Indian myself, even I feel iffy about wearing henna because I have not been as steeped in the culture as other Desi girls.

I don't think it's inevitably racist but the fact is that it will always be a one-way cultural exchange because of imperialism. Our culture has already been altered irreparably by European and American cultures without our consent. To give back would only results in a one-way exchange.

I think that racists don't actually long for diverse expressions of culture, they aim to absorb other cultures and make it white. It's not just that they are forcing their culture onto us, they are taking away our culture and minimising the cultural significance to make it their own.

Personally I am somebody who calls for racial equality especially when it comes to black people, but I still feel uncomfortable drawing aesthetic inspiration from them. Even if it is done innocently it can be harmful. Iggy Azalea profits off black people while claiming to be for equality. Miley Cyrus twerks. It is so easy to draw inspiration from a racial group and adopt it as your own, especially when you ignore problematic connotations. As an Asian this is not as bad for me but when you're white it's impossible to avoid. Does that make sense?

As long as you're willing to listen to the voices of those who are being appropriated, you're not an asshole! We all have things to learn :-)

    [–]energeticstarfish 5ポイント6ポイント  (0子コメント)

I think that racists don't actually long for diverse expressions of culture, they aim to absorb other cultures and make it white.

That's what she was saying. That it's unfair to call someone who is inspired by/wants to incorporate another culture racist, because a racist person wouldn't want to do that.

Even if it is done innocently it can be harmful. Iggy Azalea profits off black people while claiming to be for equality. Miley Cyrus twerks.

So, as a whited girl with British and German heritage, am I only allowed to waltz because dance derived from any other culture is racist appropriation? If we accept your train of logic then it actually leaves white people with very little they are allowed to participate in. And I agree with the person above, excluding someone from something because of their skin color is what's really racist.
