You're right, but also remember that it wasn't your house that was robbed. If someone threatened your life and your girlfriend's life, you might react in a similar way. Not saying it's okay to wish prison rape on someone, even jokingly, but be careful about judging SUNSfan when you haven't been through that personally.

It's easy for us to sit in our reddit armchairs and say things like "an eye for an eye is wrong" without experiencing a seriously traumatizing event.

Yo, fellow guy here who was robbed at home by two males with axes, told I was gonna die because I was hiding valuables (nope I was just really poor) had family hiding in another room trying to call the police etc. and I wouldn't wish anything bad to happen to them - the main assailant served his time and I hear he's changed his life in some really positive ways. At the same time different people cope with this type of thing in different ways, I was definitely angry at a few points in regards to what happened but it's best to accept that bad things happen and move on.

(sips coffee from armchair)

This man is right. Just because something bad happened to you doesn't mean you should condone rape on anybody.

Rather, we should hope that the punishment the courts of justice have handed down to him help him rehabilitate himself into becoming a productive and positive part of society!

Edit: No /s, people. The prison and justice system in America has been well-documented to do nothing to alleviate crime or positively impact society. Instead, it helps get prison contractors rich and subjects minorities to blatant discrimination and leads the whole prison population to statistically just commit crimes again once they get out :/

[–]i'm only pretending to be retardedblastcage

I'm not sure if you're making a joke here or not but that's honestly what I believe

The state has basically fucked up in the first place by allowing someone to get into a position where they're doing this, and then punishing the individual for their failures is disgusting

I'm not. I put the exclamation cuz I'm a little drunk and a positive person. I'll put an edit so people make sure it's not sarcasm.

I appreciate you putting your voice out there, especially seeing from the comments. I honestly would've played along with SunsFan's comment about rape and not even noticed anything wrong with it if not for your comment, and that in itself is saying something about the power of joking about something. We become desensitized to it and forget our morals and beliefs. My comment about rehabilitation is my serious and staunch opinion about the justice system, especially because the prison system is so fucked up in America and does nothing to alleviate crime.

I don't see a problem with it when he threatened his life just saying

Wishing bad things to happen to people who do bad things don't do anything to help the problem of people doing bad things to begin with. By showing empathy and compassion, you can better guide people and help them, rather than spurning them.

Either way its good the guy got caught and put in prison.

there's a reason people who have been subjected to violence and yet still don't wish ill on their tormentors afterwards are looked up to. it's a completely natural reaction, one that we can look on from afar and say 'well, that's probably not the way we should punish people'. don't be too harsh on someone just because they want a bit of vengeance, we have the courts and our justice system for a reason.

I guess I can't find it in myself to care, about the prison rape joke or the (now) prisoner. There are far too many other people and situations to be concerned about than whether or not a convicted felon is being treated inhumanely by other convicted felons.

And I disagree. If someone does something bad, then something bad should be visited upon them, theoretically in proportion to their actions (which I would say the 30 years in prison covers). Actions should have consequences, both good and bad.

Sadjene was streaming while Sunsfan was around the house. Two guys entered with weapons.

Since she was streaming on Twitch with a facecam, it recorded the incident, along with the person's face, robbing the place while carrying a gun. People (primarily Cyborgmatt) contacted the authorities, they got caught somewhere nearby.

Notes:

It took them a year to prosecute this guy.

People from different parts of the world helped Sadjene and Sunsfan, through the power of friendship, twitch chat and Kappas.

They were locked in a room. The two guys planned for one guy to hold Sadjene in their home while the other guy force Sunsfan to withdraw from an ATM. Guys got caught before this happened.

Good for them. My parents house was robbed, thankfully nobody was home, but they made out with tons of stuff and our sense of security in our own home.

Good. A violent psychopath belongs in prison for a long time.

I don't get all the euros whining about the long punishment. I live in europe myself and wish hell on all violent criminals. Esp. repeat offenders like this must be.

The point of "short punishments" is that the criminal is supposed to have a chance to rehabilitate.

I have no idea about the circumstances regarding this crime, so I can't really say if 30 years is too much or not. But I do believe that any hope of getting a rehabilitated man out of jail 30 years later are slim to none, meaning this man will most likely be just as criminal when he gets out. Which will lead to more crimes.

I guess it comes down to "do you want to fix the problem, or just get ridd of it?"

I imagine that they were tried for more than breaking & entering and burglary which is why they have such a long prison sentence. They held SunsFAN and Sagadene hostage which is equivalent to kidnapping, a pretty serious crime and a felony.

http://criminal.findlaw.com/criminal-charges/kidnapping.html

First time offenders should be the ones you put all bells and whistles on. Rehabilitate them.

Crimes that have no violence or harassment, try your best but I don't have any hopes for them.

Violent repeat offenders? Give them 30 more years when they get out if they didn't get the message the first time. Let them die in prison for all I care. It's a very strong difference for someone smoking some damn herb and kidnapping, pistolwhipping/threatening with a deadly weapon, assault and theft/home invasion felonies. If you do shit like that over and over, I have no sympathy. 30 years in prison for this series of crime is neither cruel or unusual. He knew he had this coming and he deserves every second of it.

you realize YOU the taxpayer are paying insane amounts of money to keep people alive for 30 years in prison right?

The death sentence and a relatively early release are out of question so you just have to settle with 30 years in jail. Also, the death sentence program is very expensive relative to the expense of keeping a person in jail for the rest of their life.

Ill probably get downvoted cuz this is american forum..

It states in a news article that one of the guys was charged with "armed robbery, kidnapping, first-degree burglary, theft of a firearm, and theft of a credit card.". They didn't just break into a house. It was a lot more than that.

Even in my area of the US, I hear about home invasion all the times and it never got as serious as this. In the old thread, there was a video of a SWAT team coming in for this even. I'm dumbfounded as well.

It's not just for home invasion; it's never just for one thing. Prosecutors will attempt to charge criminals like this for every possible crime committed, and it seems like they got all of them. Depending on how many that is, it can add up to quite a lot of time.

NO.

This is what your kind of people leading the world to: http://www.gatestoneinstitute.org/5195/sweden-rape

[–]Miyakuzi [

Well maybe he was send to a private jail( yes those exists in the usa, they are basically companies). If the warden (the CEO in this case) is buddy buddy with a judge, the judge will give longer sentences since this will increase the amount of money the jail makes. Yeahh american justice system is pretty fucked up. Also in the more culturally civelized europe the emphasize of someone going to jail is on rehabilitation (which clearly works and has been proven to be very effective by numerous prominent studies), in norway for example you have open prisons where the prisoners can walk freely. There are no bars in the entire facility. This leads to a stagering recidivism rate of 20%, the lowest in the world. While in the USA the rate is 80%. So the main emphasis in the USA is punishment and not rehabilitation, which clearly is an outdated way of thinking and just doesn't work. For some reason the USA always tend linger behind on such important social issues, maybe is has to with the fact that so many are extremely religious ( new born Christians) but who knows?

I've never been through what he has so I can only try and empathize with his horrible experience.

I don't want to judge him but regardless I do think that the comment is just negative and shouldn't have been made, but I can understand why he'd say it.

I just think you know there's a lot of people who've been through that shit that wouldn't appreciate that, and I'm putting myself in their shoes as well.

If we empathize with everyone, we lose humor. Rape is a serious matter, but if someone makes a home about it, let it go. It wasn't in that context. It's a thief that held two people at gun point. If someone wants to make a joke about that, they have every damn right to. It would be different if it was a rape joke about a girl.

If anything sunsfan has bi tendancies so thats why he mentioned anal. I'm being dead serious. Listening to him say things like "we love you all" during the early days of dota cinema was pretty strange.

You must live sheltered lives.

I think they are hipster trustfund kids who play vidya to be nerdy and go to a college which mom picked for them because it was safe.

Criminals shouldn't be pampered.

If you pamper hardened psychopaths who pistolwhip people over acouple of benjamins... then you create a lucrative incentive for more crime. However, to truly deal with crime is to be proactive and have good policeofficers on foot patrol without being police-statey about it. Also to deal with people in the risk-zone in the school environment without being overtly intrusive. (Yes, easy to say, but done right, this is what works.Good honest policework to help people, schools that teach etc. The exact opposite to the numbers game shown in the wire for instance).

Furthermore, creating an economic climate where it's easy to get a job, any job.
