I think the best part is that OP's mom didn't really know her father (OP's grandfather) so now /u/menace2impropriety 's grandfather might be able to tell her a bit about him. Very cool indeed.

Just spoke with her on the phone explaining the post/re-post and everything... there were some tears.

We're putting her and /u/menace2impropriety's grandfather in contact with each other.

That's awesome. So happy for you/her!

Damn, do you guys live very far apart? I bet they would have so much to just sit down and talk about. My own grandfather was in the Air Force when he died in 1966, and my dad was only 3. I know literally nothing more about the guy. I can't imagine what it would be like to meet someone who knew him then--and well--that could just tell my dad all about him.

Contact has been initiated! Phone calls between OP's mother and my grandfather at the very least.

We don't live particularly close to each other, no. I'm sorry for your loss and your father's loss, it sounds like your story is very similar to mine. It is really surreal, but pretty fantastic I have to say. My mom hasn't spoken to his grandfather yet, but plans to call him soon.

I hope this can heal some old wounds for both of them. Best wishes!

Sometimes reddit for all of its faults can be pretty damn cool.

You see reddit as something shitty that can be cool sometimes? I see it as the opposite.

There are two kinds of people.

I thought there were three kinds of people? Those who can do math and those who can't.

Nope, 2: those who can extrapolate from incomplete data...

And what? AND WHAT DAMMIT! YOU DIDNT GIVE ENOUGH DATA!

10 kinds: those who read binary...

Well there are only two people on reddit. You and Unidan.

People who piss in the shower, and fucking liars.

Those who know binary and those who don't?

People who see shitty as cool and cool as shitty?

You sit on a thrown of lies!

I think it depends on the subreddits that you frequent.

I never it is shitty I simply said it has some faults.

Hey, I guess they're right. Senior citizens, although slow and dangerous behind the wheel, can still serve a purpose.

Some may say, it's the reverse.

What's with, that comma?

It's exciting to think about how many other potential opportunities like this are out there, but sad to realize how few of them will actually happen. This is why I think everyone should be encouraged to write about or record themselves talking about their experiences. No matter how insignificant a person you may think you are, everyone's life is interesting and full of memories worth preserving. Even if they aren't necessarily happy.

K, wtf. Ever since I got an iPhone and started using the redditor app, whenever I click on best of posts, it brings me here instead of to the actual post. So I get to see all you people talking about the post but not the actual post. Back when I had reddit is fun on my android, I didn't even know this place existed. Someone halp

You probably pressed the comments button instead of the link. What app are you using? http://www.reddit.com/r/OldSchoolCool/comments/37jae8/my_grandfather_smoked_a_pipe_and_flew_helicopters/

Here's the link

Nope, both the comments and the link bring me to the same place. The app I'm using is called redditor

Use Alien Blue! It's the official reddit app and also the best! I've used it for 3 years and none of the other apps work as well for me.

I didn't like that one because you couldn't share things and you couldn't see which posts were gilded. It seems the perfect reddit app doesn't exist :(

While the no gild thing holds true, you can definitely share things on here. Check out /r/AlienBlue. The sidebar has some information on how to get around the app :)

Thanks, maybe I'll give it another shot

Try Rhombus, it'll show you gilded posts but if you click on the title it still takes you to the post bestof is referring to rather than here :)

Thanks, I haven't tried that one yet

The bacon one is also pretty good

I've tried bacon but unfortunately it's just too much of a change for me. But if it works for you just fine then that's great! The other app is apparently not so good, however. I've used this app too long to switch over to anything else.

It's so beautiful to see something like this. This isn't really the type of news story you would see on t.v. but with technology we really do get to connect in a very meaningful way.

I bet if any of the news station accounts get wind of this, they might be wiling to air it as a feelgood kind of piece.

RAPIST TROLLS ON THE INTERNET ARE STALKING YOUR FAMILY, MORE AT 11

This is what /r/bestof was made to be.

[–]IAmA_Risky_Click_AMA 9ポイント10ポイント  (0子コメント)

I'd say I didn't come for the feels, but that really is why I come to /r/bestof. This one was pretty heavy.

This will be all over the news in a couple days, I guarantee it. At the minimum it will become a click bait story on all the usual sites, and then on Yahoo news about 12 days later.

it happens more and more these days it seems. I notice Yahoo stories quoting and linking Reddit all the time now. I'm sure some of their writers are Redditors. I guess there's no harm, not everyone Reddits and some of these stories should be shared with the common folk.

I usually stick to more of the smaller subreddits, so sometimes I forget how many people are on Reddit. It is pretty amazing that these things can happen.

It's also crazy to think of all the missed possible connections here

[–]Circumstantial_Law 7ポイント8ポイント  (1子コメント)

Yeah I wonder if any happily married couples have ever unknowingly gotten in a heated internet argument

My grandpa and your grandpa

Spending time together

My grandpa told your grandpa

I'll remember you forever

Talk about

Hey now.... Hey now...

It's a shame that the two will never get to be friends because they know eachother's users names.

Do we know how far apart these two redditors live? I would throw some money at a gofundme.com to get the grandkids to spend a day together to share stories and photos.

Thank you, kind sir or madam, but I don't think that will be necessary. We'll figure it out. I am a touring musician and travel a lot, so there's a good chance OP and I will connect soon enough. We've already exchanged correspondence outside of reddit :)

Maybe, but it's still not unfounded. The world is really, really small. There are frequently stories in real life of people meeting old friends in towns they've moved to after not talking to eachother for years - both just happening to be in the same place at the same time.

There could be hundreds of people who have interacted with the OP or OP's grandpa in some way who also saw the thread. Maybe gradeschool friends who never kept contact or the barber that they visited for years and became friendly with but never formed a solid connection.

But they don't have any solid connection, proof, or assurance that the connection exists, and even if they did, they still might not say anything.

My grandmother had a brother that moved to Arizona in the 40s or 50s. In the late 80s my aunt moved there. When my grandmother went to visit my aunt took her to the grand canyon. A butterfly was flying and my grandmother put out her finger and it landed on it. A guy next to her said it would make a nice picture. It was her brother she hadn't seen in something close to 40 years

I happened to be in NYC last week and went for a couple drinks with some people from a random NYC meetup post I found. Met a girl a year younger than me who grew up in my town with whom I have mutual friends. The world is much, much smaller than we often think it is.

Girl I was going out with in my 1st or 2nd year of college (early 80's, small midwestern town) and I went on a spring break trip to Florida. At about 7AM just after we crossed the border we stopped for breakfast, and in the McDonald's there she ran into someone she knew.

I was like, damn this girls sure gets around. Turns out...she really got around >.<

I've got a fun example of the world being small. My parents moved to the US in the 90s, 91 to be exact, from Russia. Somewhere, around... 96-97, we moved to a new neighborhood. It wasn't a large one, and less than a quartermile down the road, moved some family friends from Russia as well. Neither knew the other had moved to that location until they randomly met each other one day. Small world.

[–]Confirmation_By_Us 5ポイント6ポイント  (3子コメント)

This is an extremely unusual helicopter. I searched "army h-19" and I can't find another with that paint. I'd guess they were only used by the army (with that paint) in Greenland during the 50's. My point is that it's unique enough that anyone with an association with that helicopter is likely to take a close look when they see another one.

I have some mild coincidences of my own: I served on a ship in 1995 in Alaska with about 80-100 other people. One of the guys I served with has a real estate office a mile from my house, but neither of us are from this area. One of my good friend's grandfather served on the same ship during the 50s.

A friend of mine walked into his grandfather's house a few years ago and was surprised to see one of the W.O.'s from a ship we had both served on in 1998. His grandfather and the W.O. had been close many years before.

TL;DR: Coincidences happen.

I'm not accusing anyone of anything. Sure, coincidences happen. When I was a kid, my best friend and I both had dads who served in Korea. Later it turned out that not only did they come home on the same boat, but they were standing side by side at the rail as their ship came into port. [Which we figured out from some pictures they had taken]. I used to teach college classes, and once I was hiking on a mountain trail outside a remote town in Austria, and I came across one of my students from the previous term. Amazing, astounding!

Still, reddit has a very long history of events like this, which often turn out to be hoaxes. I'm just [more or less jokingly] pointing it out as a possiblity. I don't think it really matters that much one way or the other.

[–]Confirmation_By_Us 1ポイント2ポイント  (0子コメント)

I replied to yours, because it was the highest rated skeptical comment. I know you're exactly right about the frauds, and your link is the perfect reminder. I read it as a warning rather than an accusation, but I wanted to share why I thought this particular instance seemed very plausible to me.

I think you've summed it up more effectively and concisely than anyone else.

That's a blast from the past. I remember it quite well.

After just recently losing my grandfather, this post (well the original) made me cry! Sometimes reddit blows my mind.

I am very sorry for your loss.

I'm really sorry to hear that :( I'm dreading that day. This was an amazing coincidence though, definitely touching regardless

First time in a while that a thread on Reddit gave me chills, very cool.

Why is the thumbnail the hippie chick, but when you go to the actual post it's a different picture?

The only way this could get better is if OP and user met, fell in love and lived happily ever after.

On reddit, anything could be faked with enough karma involved

Mother of God.

I'm still a wee Redditor of only 5 months, but this is hands down the most amazing thing I've seen come out of this site.

This really is why I subscribe to /r/bestof. Friends and families reconnecting through the internet.

I'm so happy for those two and their families. I have a photo of my grandfather and his fellow Marines from WWII that I would like to do as much as possible to identify the other men. My grandfather was a groomsmen to one of them, but we still don't have the name. Putting the link here for a miracle: https://www.reddit.com/r/picrequests/comments/2g7wss/request_can_you_make_it_possible_to_identify_the/?sort=top

I want a vid of the 2nd dudes grandpa doing some type of Christopher Walker pulp fiction monologue

How I imagine OP and everyone involved.

Edit: NSFW

Edit 2: this apparently wasn't as funny as I thought it was.

So... how did this guy know, that OP's grandfather, was his grandfathers friend?

OK, He saw the post, did he recognize OP's grandfather?

Which is highly doubt.

It all seems like two accounts working together. He had a random picture of his grandfather and OP's grandfather on his PC? Why would he have that? He never even knew his grandfather's friend.

I could be wrong, but I have to say it's at least a possibility.

He said he was scanning old photographs, so he could have looked at them as recently as today. Maybe he's into history/wars or his grandfather's stories in general. The picture would also look similar, taken in the same era, similar backgrounds/uniforms.

Out of all the threads to nitpick, you choose the one where there's no promotion or money changing hands. Neither person would profit from this exchange, so I choose to believe it was a happy coincidence.

OP also posted other pictures in the thread. In one of the pictures you can clearly see the name. The guy saw the name, knew his grandfather served in the same area during the same time, called his grandfather who said he knew the name because they were best friends. The guy also posted a picture of his grandfather with another guy and while not the best picture looks kind of familiar to OPs grandfather

I totally get the skepticism. This is explained in detail in the original thread in /r/oldschoolcool.

Wow. This is the coolest thing I've seen on the Internet in a while.
