Boiled Alive Cat Meat Soup, South Korea
Cats in onion bags are advertised as ingredients for South Korean “Boiled Alive Cat Soup ” where a live cat is tossed into boiling water and the lid held down as the live cat screams and frantically tries to rip it’s way out of the boiling pot.
There’s many documented accounts of cats clawing in desperation to get out of boiling water pots in the cat meat trade. They are despised in most cat eating countries yet people believe the myths that cats can cure certain illnesses. There is no scientific data to back up these myths.

It’s considered “normal” to put wiggly animals in onion bags in markets in Asia. Wiggly animals include cats and kittens, ducks, ducklings, chickens and so on. These stalls are not pet shops, they are live meat market vendors.
If the wiggly animal stops wiggling – it usually gets thrown in the trash; even if it’s still alive. I’ve witnessed this in real life. Often these animals are in the full sun for several hours, with no drink or food and no mother for the baby animals.
To see the vendor poke them in the side and not see the chirpy response they want, then pick the kitten or puppy up and literally toss it in the trash bin is horrific beyond description! I witnessed this in South Korea, inside Moran Market.
The vendor was a woman and the trash bin had a man guarding it, so under no circumstances was I allowed to retrieve the still alive animals. I had to walk away and pretend to have something in my eye as I cried tears of helplessness.
I deliberately went to the trash bin a few more times over the next hour, desperate to find a way to get the dying puppies and kittens who were still squirming on the bottom of the drum. Moran Market is NOT a pet shop and butchers and vendors aren’t interested in touchy-feely emotions and feelings.
Being a foreigner in Korea, all eyes were already on me because normally foreigners are not allowed to stroll around Moran Market for several hours, day after day. I had worked hard to charm my way into being allowed to “hang out” at Moran Market and knew any excuse would be used to get rid of me. Especially from the women vendors who constantly glared at me with pure disdain.
Dog and cat butchers are not interested in being your friend and your tears repulse them so you MUST keep control of your emotions and your faculties. It’s all very well to say you would have done this and you would have done that, but you have probably never stood face to face with men carrying knives and wearing fresh blood splatter from dogs they just slaughtered.
As you read this article, one thing you need to know about going into live meat markets: you do NOT call the shots! You have no rights and you are despised. Having an attitude of ‘I’ll show them’ will only get you thrown out, severely injured or worse. The dog and cat meat trade is a violent and aggressive world. Welcome to hell.
