19 Times Tumblr Got Serious About The Struggles Of Women In Our Society

1. When it reminded us that women’s bodies are natural, too:

I HATE WHEN PEOPLE ARE GROSSED OUT BY UNUSED TAMPONS. THATS LIKE BEING GROSSED OUT BY UNUSED NAPKINS, OR CLEAN SHEETS, OR CLEAN UNDERWEAR. LIKE OMG ITS NOT GOING TO HURT YOU. ITS CLEAN. TAMPONS EXIST WHY DO WOMEN HAVE TO BE EMBARRASSED OR HIDE THEM. ugh
Once I had an unopened box of tampons in plain view and my stepdad acted like that was some huge breach of social etiquette. I asked why on earth he was acting so weird about it, and he said, “Well you wouldn’t want me leaving a box of condoms lying around would you?”
Okay first of all, that you’re even implying that tampons and condoms are comparable items is fucking stupid since condoms are used for sex and tampons are used to like, you know, not bleed all the fuck over ourselves during this biological function none of us can stop. So that begs the question of why the fuck you’re sexualizing periods or items required to live hygienically during one, wherein the answer is that you believe vaginas are inherently sexual and only exist as something to stick your dick in. Because me leaving an unopened box of tampons in view is literally the same thing as leaving a stick of deodorant or a bar of fucking soap out on the counter if you’re considering them by their function. But God forbid I remind you vaginas exist in neutral everyday circumstances and that they don’t just manifest when you wanna fuck one.
Lots of important lines in here

2. When it reminded us not to judge books by their covers:

whenever i see posts like this i makeup backstories for the slutty girls
YES

3. When it pointed out that not everyone experiences adversity in the same way:

White feminists:
When you discuss the wage gap, here are a few things to keep in mind:
  • Only white women make $0.77 to a man’s dollar.
  • Black women make about $0.68 to a man’s dollar.
  • Latina women make about $0.58 to a man’s dollar.
Intersectionality matters.
I will keep reblogging this to point out that disabled people, including men, make 22 cents on the dollar. Mostly because it is legal to pay us below minimum wage, but whatevs.

4. When it reminded us that it is NOT the victim’s fault:

It’s hard to imagine asking victims of violent crimes what they could have done to prevent what happened to them.
STOP BLAMING THE VICTIM

5. When it taught us to question what we’ve been conditioned to think:

im a bad person who thinks bad thoughts like ‘ew what is that girl wearing’ and then remember that im supposed to be positive about all things and then think ‘no she can wear what she wants, fuck what other people say damn girl u look fabulous’ and im just a teeny bit hypocritical tbh
I was always taught by my mother, That the first thought that goes through your mind is what you have been conditioned to think. What you think next defines who you are.
I ALWAYS DO THAT LIKE 24.7

6. When it laid down the law about consent:

I punched a guy bc he was making rape jokes and one of the things he said was “what’s the difference between yes and no? Nothing” so I asked him if he’d care if I punched him in the face and he said yes but I did it anyway since there’s no difference between yes and no and that’s the story of how I gave someone a bloody nose
Can We All Just Applaud This Person?

7. When it shared a take on #NotAllMen:

No one actually thinks all men.

Just too many men.

Just enough men to be afraid.
Just enough men that all women have experienced it.
Just enough to make it a social problem not a personal one.

8. When it reaffirmed that women can do what they damn well please:

a woman’s body is not for you. if she wants to cover it she should feel free and safe in doing so. if she wants to expose it she should feel free and safe in doing so. it is not an indication of her self-respect but an indication of her preferences for whatever reasons she chooses — none of which are your business or concern.

9. When it fought back against Hollywood tropes:

why dont we ever talk about how movies condition girls to associate glasses and curly hair with ugliness because that is so fucking damaging to young girls who grow up seeing girls who look like them always be the “before” of every makeover
read this post. read it again. read it two more times. read it aloud. i want this to be ingrained into peoples’ minds

10. When it got passionate about the correlation between gender and intelligence*:

“If more girls wanted to be scientists, there would be more female scientists”
*takes a deep breath* WE LIVE IN A SOCIETY THAT ACTIVELY DISCOURAGES FEMALE INTELLIGENCE BY PAINTING IT AS A NON FEMININE TRAIT AND SETS UP MALES TO BE IN POSITIONS OF ACADEMIC SUPERIORITY DESPITE THERE BEING NO CORRELATION BETWEEN GENDER AND ACADEMIC ABILITY thank you for your time
*Hint: there really isn’t one.

11. When it offered a bleak look at a woman’s daily life:

trends girls hate:
  • not being able to walk alone at night
  • not being able to walk alone at any time really
  • being cat called
  • dress codes
  • “not all men”
  • “feminazi”
  • literally being murdered for turning men down

12. When it questioned society’s attack on self-esteem:

The fact that a woman who appreciates herself and loves every inch of her body and her mind is perceived as arrogant and vain whereas a woman who struggles with self esteem issue is more or less the norm and seen as modest clearly shows how society is trying to belittle woman and trick them into thinking they somehow have to feel inadequate all the time

13. When it made it explicitly clear that women don’t have to subscribe to anyone’s expectations but their own:

Women do not have to:
  • be thin
  • give birth
  • cook for you
  • have long hair
  • wear makeup
  • have sex with you
  • be feminine
  • be graceful
  • shave
  • diet
  • be fashionable
  • wear pink
  • love men
  • be the media’s idea of perfection
  • listen to your bullshit
  • have a vagina

14. When it laid it down that makeup isn’t for anyone but the wearer:

You are not some kind of a saint because you “still think women are beautiful” without makeup on. You do not get brownie points for not being disgusted by women in their natural state. Some women wear a little makeup, some women wear a lot, some women wear none at all and men’s opinions about it are less than worthless. Because we don’t fucking wear it for you.
And shaming women for their makeup choices is misogynist body-policing regardless of how much makeup you think is the ideal amount. Not your body, not your fucking business.

15. When it reminded us all that some things should go both ways or no ways:

I put on my Tinder profile that I hate sports, I don’t drink beer and I’m 150% feminine all day all the time and so many guys are like…offended? One guy was like “what if the guy you like loves sports, you won’t even watch with him?” And I asked “will you wake up at 8am during fashion week to watch live streams of shows with me because that’s what I’m really interested in. And he said “I don’t really find that interesting.” And I’m like THEN WHY THE FUCK WOULD I CARE ABOUT SPORTS FOR YOU OMG.

16. When it exposed a major double standard:

Petition to start calling men who immediately ask for nudes “easy” and telling them to “have some self-respect”.
OH SHIT

17. When it made no bones about the sentiment behind the violence:

The fact that men send rape threats to women they hate and want to terrorize is further proof that rape isn’t about sex, or attraction, or short skirts, or a “loss of control”.  It’s about power, entitlement, and upholding patriarchy.

18. When it reminded us all that, just because we might not have personal experience with a problem, it doesn’t mean someone else isn’t enduring it every day:

What triggers my anger is when that person who happens to be a female says: “I don’t need feminism. I don’t need to be liberated.”
How about you tell that to:
  1. that Moroccan girl who killed herself after being forcibly married to her rapist (x)
  2. that 11-year-old Texan girl who got raped by 18 men while the New York Times said she “dressed older than her age.” (x)
  3. Reyhaneh Jabari, an Iranian woman who was tortured in jail then hanged after killing the man who was going to rape her. (x)
  4. Nojood Al-Ali from Yemen who got divorced when she was 10. (x)
  5. the 16-year-old girl from Ohio who got raped and filmed at a party by 2 boys, while CNN reporters talked about the bright futures of the rapists as athletes. (x)
  6. the 94 women in Jordan who were legally married to their rapists, only in 2014. (x)
  7. the 8-year-old girl who was married to a man 5 times her age, and died on the day of her wedding because she suffered from bleeding and uterine rupture after intercourse. (x
  8. the 25 Palestinian women who were killed by either their brother or father, in order to “protect their honor” only in 2013. (x)
  9. the 99% of Egyptian women and 90% of Yemeni women who have experienced sexual harassment (x) (x
You still don’t need feminism?

19. When it pulled a “checkmate” in the game of “who’s had it worse?:”

It always gets me when MRAs bring up the draft as an example of discrimination against men. Yes, it’s true that no woman in America has ever been subject to conscription in times of war; however, being that the most recent draft was in 1973, most likely neither have you. If you get to drag up stuff that happened before you were born, so does everybody else - and I’m pretty sure the ladies are going to win that particular game of misery poker.
BAM.
