this is great because bike helmets are not only uncomfortable, but ugly as hell and they make your head sweaty etc

The thing about bike helmets is that the more you spend on them, the less ugly, less uncomfortable, and more breathable they are. I spent about 110 bucks on a Giro bike helmet and I don't mind wearing it at all. The cheapo bike helmets they sell are protective, but they are also heavy and not very breathable.

I'd take an ugly helmet over cracking my head open any day.

I'll take separated infrastructure over a helmet though. Helmets not necessary in the Netherlands.

That's oversimplifying it. You can still run into stuff or lose control or have something else come up. Cars running into you (or you running into cars) are not the only reason you should wear a helmet on a bike.

Its hard not to over simplify it. There's some data that helmets just make the car drivers and bike riders more risky, negating the benefit. Also there's a lot of evidence that there is "safety in numbers". If no-one cycles then car drivers don't check for them, making cycling dangerous. Helmets do offer a benefit, but its a small part of the picture.

I would argue that when responsibly using a sperate infrastructure built just for bikes that you are about as safe as you would be walking. You could be walking along and bang your head into something, or fall down some stairs too... But I don't see anyone arguing that pedestrians should be wearing helmets.

Pedestrians don't typically walk at 20+ miles per hour.

You're definitely not as safe as walking around...just think of the energy involved in crashing a bike compared to falling over.

Yeah, it's alright the Dutch saying that but the rest of us have gradients to worry about; I'd take walking into a tree at the bottom of a hill over cycling into it any day.

I was riding my pedal road bike along a footpath through a country park in the UK a couple of winters back. Went round a corner, didn't see the ice and BAM. Straight down on the side of my face. Chin was gouged and cheek was scratched. Luckily my friend I was wearing a helmet which took a nice graze and bump but left my skull the way it should be, not cracked.

ALWAYS wear a motherfucking helmet.

Side note: when I just got the road bike and was unaccustomed to the tread etc... of road tyres I went down on a damp roundabout. Helmet didn't take a hit but TLDR is you can fall anywhere, at any time for any reason.

Don't need a helmet in holland...

Dude, in my life I have run face first into a wall, dumped myself over the handlebars a couple times, tore up my leg once, and broken my collarbone all in different bike wrecks.

Exactly 0 of these had to do with cars.

I generally don't move at a speed that necessitates a helmet when I am just being a pedestrian.

You might want to knock on some wood

edit: having a helmet can save you lots of money

One time I fell of my bike and I hit my head on the pavement pretty hard. I've worn a helmet every ride since.

the saying over in /r/motorcycles is 'how much is your head worth?'

A very, very nice arai helmet

Slightly more momentum than a bicycle

You don't even need to spend that much. I remember hating helmets as a kid. We probably got ones that were ~$15-20. When I started cycling again I spent only $60 and it made a world of difference. I actually love my helmet now.

I can't attest for comfort, but they're pretty ugly to me at any price point.

Agreed, but like /u/Cromodileadeuxtetes said, I'd rather look like a dork and have a fully in tact brain

What about rad sk8er helmets?

[–]HARSHING_MY_MELLOW 0ポイント1ポイント  (1子コメント)

They are extremely hot and generally just uncomfortable.

We're talking about rad factor though. Obviously nothing is as rad as not wearing a helmet.

Is this bike helmet one time use?

All bike helmets are really. If you hit it once, you're supposed to replace it. They're not designed like skateboard helmets where you can smack them on the ground over and over. They're designed to basically collapse from absorbing the shock of an impact and save your brain. A good helmet will usually be in pieces after a hard crash and only held together by the shell. Even if you can't visibly tell, you should replace it once you knock it.

I got in a bike accident when I was younger. I was going like 35 mph down this massive mountain at night. This car stomped on the brakes and I ran into the back of the car. I was thinking the reaction time from when I hit the car till impact would almost be impossible for this type of helmet. I didn't know that most bicycle helmets were not reusable. Thanks for the info mate.

You still look like a plug. Sorry.

TIL redditors are more concerned about being sweaty and having their hair out of place than they are about serious brain damage.

on my motorcycle, always helmet

on my mountain bike, never helmet

on my skateboard, helmet only when skatepark requires it

on the low-speed wheel-machines, the lack of helmet is compensated for by years of experience in how to fall right to minimize injury

Hey no worries, I'm pretty sure all those people who've died or become vegetables as a result of bicycle accidents thought they didn't need a helmet either.

At least their hair would have looked great

If your risk assessment leads you to believe that the decreased risk of wearing a helmet is worth the inconvenience, then that's wonderful. Why do you (and other people evidently) feel the need to condescend others about that though?

He's just worried about you and doesn't want you to become a vegetable.

I can't speak for /u/TurkeyLerg, but I like vegetables.

And ruin your hairstyle. Iirc that was one big point for the inventors to build that helmet.

but they work, and are cheap

And these are no different. It's not like it magically appears out of nowhere. You wear it around your neck. So instead of being ugly and uncomfortable and make your head sweaty, these will be ugly and uncomfortable and make your neck sweaty.

No, now you have to wear a thick scarf all the time.
