Jacob Riis park in the Rockaways is great as well. It's a bit of a hike as you cross a bridge to get there. I'm not sure about public transport there but very accessible by car or bike. Not a lot of people, nice beach, and CLEAN!

You can get to Riis park pretty easily on public transit. Take the 2 to Brooklyn College and then grab the Q35 which takes you right to parking lot at the beach. Super easy way to escape 'the city' in the summer if you don't have a car.

[–]GreenSkyFishForest Hills 4

What's it like there, and any idea how crowded it would get in a few weeks?

I don't have a car, but I really want to go to a nice clean beach that isn't crowded with my GF. Usually with my parents I go to this part of the Rockaways that's like where the private housing is. I'm not aware of any nearby train stations to it, and if you drive there it's $15 to park which wards off a lot of people. But it's very clean and nice there.

Well it definitely gets more crowded as the summer gets on. Hence my quote marks on 'the city', as weekends in July can get pretty packed. But certainly in June I have gone and found it to be not that crowded and a nice mellow day at the beach. If you can avoid the weekends, you'll have the better experience, although peak-season summer saturdays are still a sight to behold.

The bus is right across the street from the Brooklyn College subway stop, so not too much walking required. Pretty good day trip for under $5 of travel coin. You'll want to bring all your own food and bevs though, as local options are slim.

Edit: Oh, and if you really want privacy and don't mind walking a bit, just head west away from the parking lot at Riis, and you'll eventually get to a less busy spot.

Once the weather is consistently warm and the water warms up a bit, it can get really crowded, especially on the weekends. Weekdays aren't as crazy but if you get there early it's quite pleasant.

cool, I didn't know it was that direct. Thx!

Thanks! I did this today and had an awesome time!

Or take the Beach Bus from Brooklyn. Direct, quick, free beer en route.

What beach is this and how do you get there?

I go to beach 67th. I surf...and while it's crowded they did a great job with dredging and replenishment so the beach is huge. Beach 90th has more of a scene but it's not as big (still, it's better this year and last than the last 20 years)

Cool! Thanks for the recommendations!

I'm always there. Hey!

Hey friend. Do you surf as well?

I surf as well.

Visited the Rockaways. Surreal experience knowing you were still in NYC.

Anyone here from the peninsula? How is it living there?

A friend of mine used to live in Broad Channel (the island just before you get to the Rockaways). It felt like you lived in a small beach town just outside of the city.

That's because he lives in a small beach town just outside of the city.

That was the joke!

With a subway train to take you to work!

The commute would be a bitch, but I still dream of it.

In the summer there are no reasons to leave. Unfortunately that isn't always true. Its not always summer and people have to leave for work. Getting to work/school could be measured in hours and there were no entertainment amenities, no movie theaters, bowling alleys, etc.

I'd imagine it was a lot like most places without easy public transportation (Marine Park, Eastern Queens) and less like the sleepy beach towns in other cities.

Not to sound too negative, there is a beach, its always feels 10 degrees cooler, and everyone knows everyone else which I think is fairly unique for NYC.

If you want a surreal experience, go west into Breezy Point. That place is very unique. It has the demographics of some small town in the Midwest, the population density of Lower Manhattan and the infrastructure of 19th century London.

Breezy Point is quite unique. Here is a interesting fact: Its population (primarily Irish American) has the highest consumption of Budweiser beer per capita in the world. Also but unrelated, if you happen to be African American be prepared to stand out and feel a little unwelcomed. Plus parking there is horrible and largely unavailable to non-residents. However it is a beautiful place - they used to call it the "Irish Rivera". The beach is clean and uncrowded plus there is great fishing on the tip of the point.

Wonderful. Another place i shouldnt go.

Its not just people of color made to feel unwelcome. There is one East West road and literally EVERY North South road branching from it is gated. This goes on for miles and there are NONE of these roads without a gate. Its a wealthy private community.

I used to work in Breezy Point. For the most part, the people are nice, but extremely elitist. When I first started my job, they asked "Are you Irish?", I said "A quarter, mostly Italian", and the popular response was "Still Irish. You'll do fine around here."

There were a number of people who came into the establishment who would turn down being helped by the gentleman from Guyana because, well, you get it.

The absolute worst, most ridiculous thing that Breezy Point does is this stupid thing called "Mardi Gras". I think it's over Labor Day weekend, maybe Memorial Day, and they celebrate a weekend of drinking, drinking, closing their businesses to drink, and then drinking a little bit... by walking around drinking everywhere. It used to drive me nuts when they'd say "Mardi Gras weekend is coming up!", and I'm like "no, Labor/Memorial Day (whichever) weekend is coming up".

For a neighborhood that hosts veterans for the Wounded Warrior project, they sure as hell love to disregard an actual holiday honoring them if it means coming up with their own name for a weekend of binge-drinking.

if you happen to be African American be prepared to stand out and feel a little unwelcomed.

Those racist asshole at Breezy Point have called the cops on me when I was changing a tire. Trust me nothing warmed my heart as much as watching the neighborhood burn after Sandy.

Fuck Breezy Point and anyone that comes from there.

Edit: Just so your craybabies in here are clear. The cops thing wasn't just me and I'm speaking from experience of having family that lives in Far Rockaway. See this is typical of so many of your bitch made losers in here. When shit is about Black people you losers want to suddenly talk culture and communities but as soon as its reversed you want it to be individuals. Well fuck that and fuck Breezy Point and hopefully another fire will get the rest of the community.....you know...cause of their culture.

[–]___________________9Flushing 17ポイント18ポイント  (0子コメント)

that's really fucked up actually

One time some black folks in a car yelled "Fuck you, white boy!" at me.

I'd love to see all communities of color burn to the ground. /s

You probably deserved it so it's OK.

I will add that its RIDICULOUS that those wealthy people got millions of federal Sandy dollars. They built on a spit of sand so they knew the risks, these are second homes for the most part, and it is in practice a private club closed to the public. Not a dime of public money should have been spent there.

Wishing fire and destruction is way over the top though your rage is justified.

for getting the cops called on you for being black? that's just god's vengeance.

You sound like a very pious man. Is your god Adolph Hitler?

Trust me nothing warmed my heart as much as watching the neighborhood burn after Sandy.

And that's why you're a piece of shit.

Racist assholes are downvoting you cause they aren't comfortable with the idea that this shit happens all the time.

Perhaps he is being downvoted because he mentions being happy half of a town burned down and is wishing the other half burns down. That too me seems just as fucked up as racism.

I spent most of my summers growing up down there and I'm not gonna lie, I can't blame you. The people are largely a bunch of insufferable, rich, racist, elitists. The location is unbeatable with the bay and ocean in walking distance from just about anywhere but fuck me I'd never live down there again even if I could afford it.

There's a small minority of people down there who are only able to afford it because a family member "bought in" back in like 1900 when the community was being founded and (if I do say so myself) most of them are decent. But the rest are so overwhelmingly snooty.

I live in marine park. Beautiful areas where all the Gerritsen and marine park teenagers get drunk, smoke pot and fuck eachother in the forests of the gateway recreation center (84th biggest park in the country!)

and throw bricks etc at cars!

Gerritsen beach - the only place where Friday night is a mad dash to the liquor store, and when they're out, a fight for the beer at the Chinese deli and 24.

demographics of some small town in the Midwest

Yea, gotta avoid those spooky black people!

its sucks, dont move here ;)

When was this pic taken? Usually there are hordes of people and also a massive pipe along the beach.

That's on the other side of the island , this side doesn't have the pipe

I have family in Rockaway Park and spent a year commuting into Manhattan while I lived with them. I either took the Express Bus to Manhattan, or if I didn't have enough Money on my MetroCard, take the bus to the E train on Queens Blvd, which was usually shorter than the A train in the winter.

I love it there, but haven't had the chance to go in awhile.

I don't live ther but I've wanted to for years, and everyone tells me you spend ten months a year in anticipation of two months a year.

Centerport represent! It's so fucking nice out today too makes me love living here.

[–]benaleneSt.

This is also New York City. Midland Beach on Staten Island. Here is a shot a bit further back. Still not much. 30 min ferry ride, then a short bus ride right to the beach. My only beef is that there are no food options. There is a really bad concession stand (food will make you barf), and an overpriced fancy restaurant with a dress code (on a beach, come on). So my suggestion would be to bring a picnic lunch.

My friend posted this today... makes the rockaways look amazing.

Oh dear. The newbies have no idea how filthy that water is and that sewage from NYC empties out right there.

Where exactly? Is there a water cleanliness map?

I wish. It's usually after a big storm. The sewage treatment plant nearby can't keep up and they have to dump some sewage in with the treated water.

Your friend is a fantastic photographer!

I find it amazing how you can go from amusement park beach (Coney Island) to quiet paradise beach (The Rockaways) in a subway ride.

Well, a couple of fairly long subway rides.

neverending. not doing that again

There used to be an amusement park in the Rockaways. It was called Playlamd and it was fun. It closed in the 80s and the lot was vacant for about 15 years before they built up cooke-cutter feder houses that got wrecked by Sandy.

Isn't it a bit cool for Riis Park today?

I'm surprised to see all the positive Rockaway talk in here. Last time I went we found a tampon, a needle, etc. The time before that there was a chemical sheen on the water. Not to mention it's overcrowded as fuck.

NYC beaches are gross. Do yourself a favour and take the LIRR to Long Beach on LI.

Don't know where this is, but Fort Tilden has a nice beach, too.
