Every country's gotta endure jokes. Too bad for America you just give us a lot to joke about.
Edit: You can downvote me all you want, America doesn't get immunity for jokes just because you get a lot of flak. If you're the n°1 country like you always claim to be, you're gonna get criticism. It's normal. High trees catch a lot of wind.
Also, you put people like Bush in power, and invade countries for nuclear weapons they didn't have, and then you expect us NOT to make fun of you?
I'm not even American. It's just a mediocre joke that's been done a million times - and posting it on memorial day is an attempt to come across as anti-establishment, but it's not. It's just lame.
You're taking this way too seriously, especially for a non-American. Yeah, these anti-American jokes are old, so is the "I'm not American but oh poor America, it gets shit on so much, I'm gonna stand up for it."
It's a joke. What, jokes can't be controversial? If you don't think it's funny and lame, ok, but you're still gonna have to accept people are gonna make jokes about a country that tries to idolize and glorify wars that aren't worthy of idolozing and glorifying.
Seriously, I've yet to see an American war movie where the American soldiers aren't amazing, terrorist whooping heroes. They like to forget 200 000 died in the wars in Iraq, and they left it a broken mess.
If you make mistakes like that, and you try to act like it's a good thing, and you except immunity because you're having a holiday about it?
That's not how it works. If you're big and powerful, you HAVE to be ridiculed. Anyone in power should be ridiculed. If we can't laugh with powerful people/nations anymore, where is our freedom of speech then?
I particularly dislike this joke for two reasons. Firstly it's on Memorial Day. That's a day to remember EVERY soldier that died, not just the ones involved in the Middle East. Secondly nobody really tries to glorify the Iraqi War. The one movie that comes to mind is American Sniper and everyone I know who saw that thought it was a pretty obvious propaganda attempt.
I used to live overseas and when Obama was running for president people would always ask who you were voting for. If you said Obama they'd go on a long rant about how we only wanted him for president so we wouldn't seem racist. If you said McCain they'd say you're racist. Foreigners love a good bandwagon.
I do t think American Sniper was pro-war propaganda.
You basically saw that the deployments were tearing his family apart, after he left the Navy he was still haunted, even almost killed the family dog in front of everyone at a bbq.
It wasn't until he found he could spend time with wounded vets and help them through that he got better, and those guys were missing limbs and stuff, all pretty haunted themselves.
Wasn't really a glorious war film at all.
"Foreigners love a good bandwagon"
First of all, most people I know in Europe like Obama. You're generalizing "foreigners" as anti-American naggers here. Most of us couldn't give two shits about the US.
Second of all, if we want to make a joke, then you're just gonna have to deal with that. America gets a lot of flak, but that's with a good reason. If you're powerful and strong, you HAVE to be ridiculed.
Stop being so personal and aggrevated over this. We're ridiculing your government and Hollywood, not the average American soldier nor the average American person.
Also, I don't like how you say "foreigners" like we're all the same, a homogenous group or something. It's not US vs everyone else, you know. And we shouldn't be generalized. And frankly I've seen more US citizens hop on the hate-Obama bandwagon than foreigners, so yeah. I wouldn't point the finger too much.
Look, if it's a FUNNY anti-American joke, then I'm all for it. But this post isn't that funny, and worse, it was put up today simply because it was Memorial day yesterday.
And all countries glamourize their soldiers in war movies, not just the U.S. Film-makers are out to make profits, and you wouldn't sell many tickets in the US making a movie about the My Lai massacre.

Name one European movie that glorifies our wars. Every German/French/belgian movie is about WWI, WWII and it's ALWAYS about both sides.
And what are famous American movies about? Guys to Iraq, sees friends die, gets depressed.
Your ignorance is astounding! There are tons of foreign war movies that glorify their sides. You know why? Because it sells tickets!
The Bridge (German, 1959)
The Army of Shadows (France, 1969)
Weekend at Dunkirk (German, 1964)
Is Paris Burning (France, 1966)
Downfall (German, 2004)
Das Boot (German, 1981)
La Grande Illusion (France, 1937)
The Great Promenade (France, 1966)
There are tons of movies. Stop being so ignorant. It is also not just the middle east. War movies have ALWAYS shown people go to war, for whatever reason, and seeing friends die. PTSD has been around for hundreds of years.

None of those I've never heard of, and are from before many redditors were even born... Some of them are even from PRE the war.
I'm not ignorant, you just googled that list and act like I should know those.
How many do you think have seen "La Grande Illusion"? I'm pretty sure a LOT of people saw Saving Private Ryan though... and Fury. And all those other warmovies.
Not to mention every apocalypse movie ever happening in the US, and ending up in the US "saving the world".
Or "American Sniper", glorifying a guy who shot a lot of Iraqi's.
Nobody hates on the US for your movies. But we joke about it. And then you guys get pissed, because you can't take any criticism towards the US at all, but if you joke about France surrendering or make fun of Britain's posh things, it's ok. We make a joke about your MOVIES and all hell breaks loose. It's not the criticism that's the problem here, it's some US citizens being unable to accept that there are flaws to their nation and that non-Americans are free to point them out and joke about it!
Sorry I am listing movies from my fathers personal movie collection.
You are honestly saying movies that have recently come out and not seeing the underlying message in these movies.
Fury, some of the men wanted to rape those German women. A lot of people died, only one survived to tell the story. How does that seem like glorification? Fury is also based on a collection of true stories! When Hollywood makes war movies, they tend to be based on true stories or real events.
American Sniper, true story! Half the movie he wasn't even in Iraq, he was in the States. It also depicts the dangers of PTSD which you obviously overlooked. His PTSD was so bad he couldn't be an effective father or husband. It wasn't until he found solace helping wounded veterans that his PTSD was sort of taken control of before his murder, from a veteran who also suffered from PTSD!
Read my latest comment about Saving Private Ryan. That movie DOES NOT glorify American soldiers. It is a movie about sacrifice. Sacrifice in the face of danger, just to complete a mission. Honor and Duty. None of them wanted to carry out the mission, saying it is FUBAR. Do you know what that stands for? Fucked Up Beyond All Recognition. They didn't want to carry it out, but they did.
I admit to not seeing any French/Belgian movies, being as I don't speak French or Dutch.
It would be hard for Germany to make a movie glorifying their role in any war. They were either the bad guys, or they weren't heavily involved. Das Boot was a good film, but it was more character driven.
MAS*H, Good Morning Vietnam, Hamburger Hill, Platoon, Born on the Fourth of July, and Full Metal Jacket did anything but glorify war, and they are some of the more famous American War movies. I agree there are too many 'rah rah' ones though.
WWII was sad for Europeans because the entire continent was turned into rubble and Germany tried to wipe out an entire race. There was a lot of bright side of WWII like becoming a superpower, developing the A bomb, Women becoming more powerful in the workplace, liberating France, and creating the single greatest post war recovery plan the helped Europe bounce back after such utter destruction.

No, not like popular movies like Fury, Inglorious Bastards, Saving Private Ryan, Black Hawk Down, The Thin Red Line, The Patriot, Band of Brothers, all make the US seem like the hero that saved the world.
Not to mention the many times I've heard "We saved your ass in WWII!"
Don't get me wrong, I like those movies. But to deny the US glorifies themselves is just denying the truth. Sure, you got movies that DON'T, but I haven't heard of any of the movies you mentioned and I'm sure most Europeans nor Americans haven't either.
You're missing my point anyway. You're always glorifying everything, you're "The Greatest Democracy" and "N°1 country in the world" but when we say otherwise we're "Eurotrash" and "on the bandwagon"
So I have to take it you have never seen Platoon, Full Metal Jacket, Deer Hunter, Camp X-Ray, The Pianist, Das Boot, Letters from Iwo Jima, or Paths of Glory?
Not all war movies depict heroes. Yes, some do, because, believe it or not, in war times there ARE heroes, on BOTH sides. The movies I listed depict more of the darker sides to war. A lot of the movies show American soldiers who aren't amazing or "terrorist whooping" heroes. Most of them don't even want to be there.
Of course a lot of Hollywood movies show acts of heroism, but it is usually based of of actual acts of heroism! Lone Survivor, Hurt Locker, and American Sniper for example. All based off real events and real people and real acts of heroism. Of course things are dramatized for "hollywood effect". The point is still the same.
Out of all the movies I listed, I strongly recommend Platoon, Deer Hunter, and Full Metal Jacket (all three are on IMDB's top 250). They show some horrors of war that most movies tend to ignore.
"Actual act of heroism". Yeah. Some guy killed a lot of enemy soldiers. And the same persons that you'd label terrorists are heroes to their own people. It's all subjective. Your "American Sniper" guy, not to hate on him, but you call him a hero. Your nation invaded a foreign country, killed their people, caused a lot of harm, and their people fight back. And because your "American Sniper" shot a lot of those, he's a hero? He deserves praise?
And you still can't deny that almost EVERY movie places America as the saviour of the day, America SAVES the world, and when we make fun of that you guys get pissed.
The US is not perfect. And you guys know that. It's your damn pride that makes you go full out berserk whenever someone non-American points out a flaw in the US. And that's ridiculous and only makes you seem even worse.

200 000 died in the wars in Iraq, not to mention the political mess they left. Look at Iraq now.
I don't know what the hard number is and neither do you. He sure saved a ton of people when he was with them. THAT was his dilemma as a sniper. He wanted to save more than what he was already saving. Saving in the sense that as his job as a sniper he would kill enemy snipers, thus saving the lives of the squad members.
That's why he kept going back to active duty again and again. He knew he was good at what he did and knew that those squads needed him. To protect them. It's also labeled as a tragedy because he suffered from PTSD and was later murdered by a fellow veteran who also suffered from PTSD.

Listen, mate, I'm not laughing at the dead soldiers. I don't think common people dying for the games of the powerful is even remotely funny. I'm not even defending the joke. I'm defending the ability to joke about the US. Person A was going all about how we all bandwagon on hating the US, I said we just laugh at the US because the US is powerful and all, and it SHOULD be ridiculed, just like any major power. I mean, we laugh at Russia and Poetin all the time as well.
Then everyone flipped because boo, you're European and you criticize America and I'm a filthy Eurotrash or something.
I wasn't being an asshole anyway. If you're an asshole for thinking non-Americans should be able to joke about the American government, then I'm an asshole, I will always be an asshole, and I'm gladly an asshole. I'd rather die with free speech and have Americans think I'm an asshole (who cares what you all think of me anyway, I have other things to worry about) than live as some coward who lets Americans bully me into not criticising your ridiculous foreign policy. Not that European foreign policy is any good though. I laugh about that too.
But yeah, just because I think I should be able to joke about the US isn't an excuse to assault me personally. He wasn't "making fun" of me. My friends can make fun of me. A dick on the internet calling me a virgin loser with a lazy eye, that's assaulting me as a person. Huge difference.
