I'm not the person you replied to, but in this case, it does give a decent idea of what Japanese people think a 着物 is, versus what an English speaker thinks what a kimono is. From the 4th or 5th line down, you start to see some different things.

Wikipedia is only as good as the sources it links to, since you have no idea who is the last person who edited the page, while one hopes the sources that a page links to are more official and reliable. But a Google search image gives you a decent picture of the "zeitgeist" of a term or phrase because it isn't so easy or common to Google bomb an entire page of Google image results. The "Google search definition" of a term may not actually be accurate according to the dictionary term - indeed, the Japanese dictionary term for 着物 only talks about the general meaning of "clothing" - but Google image search gives you the meaning that Japanese people are actually using day-to-day, which is those big, traditional and formal clothes.

The controversy here is that the Japanese dictionary definition of kimono is just "clothes" - even western clothes because that's also clothes - but Japanese people in daily usage would use it generally to mean formal traditional Japanese wear. On top of that, the English definition and usage of the word kimono tends to apply to anything "Japanese-y", including those silk nightgowns or whatever. So you have three definitions, the English one used by OP, the daily usage Japanese one, which some people here are advocating for, and the Japanese dictionary one, which includes all clothes from tuxedos to saris. In defense of the weeaboos, a Japanese person generally would not refer to OP's pics as kimonos. But in defense of language(?), kimono is no longer a Japanese word. Only 着物 is a Japanese word. Once it gets imported into another language, it's up to that language (English) to define the English word "kimono." If you want to import the word "correctly," then OP's product isn't a kimono (or you can import the dictionary definition correctly, but then that'd be silly because then "kimono" has to include tuxedos and saris, and we have a perfect word for that, called "clothing"). If you don't care, well, then you can call it whatever you want, of course. Like, I would just call this a robe, or a Japanese robe.
