Yeah you're right. Two years out from the Boston bombings no one should be concerned when they see a pressure cooker sitting a block from the Capitol. Guy probably just had a stew going in his car.

Well, I guess we disagree. I don't think that just because something was once used to do bad stuff means it needs to be prohibited from our lives. In fact, that seems to me to be the exact definition of "letting the terrorists win"; being freaked out enough to change our lives, when the reality is that a pressure cooker being used once makes it no more likely that it will be used again (probably less likely, since everyone thinks we will do exactly what happened here in terms of overprotection)

I agree with your concerns about security theater. But no one's prohibiting people from owning pressure cookers. I don't think anyone would blink twice at a pressure cooker in a normal environment (in a food truck, a bbq, someone's house, a packed moving van, etc.)

This was an otherwise empty car with a pressure cooker in it, giving off the smell of gas, left near the Capitol on a day with parades and festivities... it's not unreasonable to find that suspicious. Pressure cookers weren't just used once in the Boston bombings. Someone used or attempted to use pressure cooker bombs in in Mumbai in 2006, Stockholm and Times Square in 2010, and Canada in 2013.

There is a huge, huge difference between "prohibited from our lives" and something being in secure area and a suspicious situation that might be a concern. You might have some semblance of a point if there was a discussion or even a hint about banning pressure cookers, but there isn't. How you even came to the conclusion that seeing a pressure cooker sitting in an unattended car in a high security area is even remotely resembling a 'prohibition' defies logic.

So in your world when a person sees a suspicious item sitting unattended the correct reaction is to ignore it because the terrorist can't win?

I mean I can't believe I even have to spell this out. This is just plain common sense. I think you are taking some preconceived beliefs and applying them to a situation which they really, really, do not fit.

Clearly I am in the minority here; and this is why I am generally pretty upset with our security policy as a nation, but yeah, basically, if a "suspicious item" is a common good sitting unattended, I totally think the correct reaction is to ignore it. Again, it seems that no one shares this with me, but I think that "see something, say something" does very little to prevent any attacks, and that the small bit of protection is does give is not worth the price of cultivating an environment where everything out of the ordinary is perceived as a threat.

I'm not sure what preconceived beliefs you might be referring to (I'm not being facetious; I actually don't know what they might be); I just don't see the net benefit to 99.999999% of our "anti-terror" activities.

They were not literally prohibited from possessing anything. That's a best a extreme stretch of the definition of prohibition. They weren't stopped at the store. They weren't stopped while driving. They left it sitting in their car unattended a block from the Capitol which was a suspicious situation to anyone who has even remotely heard of any of the pressure cooker bombings in the last several years.

You said you don't know what beliefs and then stated them, so that's a bit of a confusing statement.

I understand your need to question activities under the guise of anti-terrorism. This wasn't anti-terrorism or homeland security. It was just local cops and local people making an educated decision. No logical or rational train of thought will come to any other conclusion. I mean if it was a story of someone parking in Walmart with a pressure cooker, you'd have a point about overreaction. But this is a block from the Capitol. You are letting your ideology towards the security state blind you to an obviously rational decision by the Capitol police department.

It's not even that you have a minority opinion, most on reddit probably support it in general. You are just applying it to a situation in which it totally doesn't fit and that to me has the resemblance of an intractable ideology. One that a person claims is correct even in the most extreme and irrational of applications.

You should need a license and have a 30 day wait to buy those things. And especially the oversized ones? No one normal needs 2 lbs of rice at a time!
