ATTENTION, PLEASE!

/u/flipa_delphiaisback is a month-old account that is offering exclusively reposts. There have been quite a few such accounts showing up recently.

At present, my operating theory is that these folks - those of them that aren't robots, that is - are working out of a call-center-like environment where they are creating and inflating Reddit accounts. I'm not sure why they're doing that, but it seems to be a recent trend. (Do you have a guess? Please let me know!)

My best guess is to rack up karma to 'legitimize' the account, then sell the account to a business for things like planted AMA questions, product reviews, etc.

That was my suspicion, too... though I can't shake the feeling that there would be easier ways of doing it.

It's probably a bot that automatically reposts top posts from subs and uses the same title. Might explain why there's a lack or comments.

are you documenting this anywhere? Make a subreddit to log these accounts and their responses, it would be interesting to see. Maybe an admin will take notice and find a root cause using their tools

Yeah, I'm keeping a list, and an administrator has already spoken with me about it.

There's also a subReddit called /r/thesefuckingaccounts that is documenting still a different variety of spam-bot.

It's amazing when you consider that we are essentially studying alien life right here on Earth. That thing is so far removed from a world that we would find habitable.

Do you mean inhabitable?

No, habitable. It is far removed from what we would find habitable, i.e. it is far removed from Earth as we know it.

To put it in perspective.

Dinosaurs came about in the Triassic period roughly 231 million years ago.

Since this Trilobite is almost 200 million years older, it is more or less a "dinosaur" of the dinosaurs.

It's over 3 times older to the T-Rex than the T-Rex is to us.

Re: increasing number of suspicious accounts

What do you expect when all you need is an email address to establish an account. It's a fundamental flaw in the architecture. As the Reddit gets more popular, there will more incentives for large scale gaming. How do we know that it's not already happening? I'd like to be able to have a credit card authenticated account and see only authenticated user votes for stuff.

On a meta-level, there's no place (that's well attended) to discuss this (that I could find). I found r/metareddit, but it's lonely and quiet there. That "Contact Us" link on the bottom of the page has no pointer to a reddit to discuss issues about/suggestions for reddit.

It's actually only 399 million years old.

I'm pretty sure you meant 6,000 years old.../s

Exactly. Earth is only 6000 years old, according to my pastor.

400 million years of NOPE just waiting to be discovered.

I'm so glad I wasn't the one to discover it. I know for a fact I would have stepped on it and given it a good rub to make sure it was dead before even considering looking to see what it was.
