I always wondered how selfie sticks work. I assumed it was with the self timer (which would be the case for the makeshift one pictured in your comment), but imagined it would be a huge hassle all the time.

I'm a computer coach at the library and an older man came in asking for help with uploading videos to YouTube. He brought his selfie stick and asked if I had ever used one.

Apparently they connect via bluetooth and there's a button for the shutter on the handle.

I never put much thought in to it to begin with, but that was interesting to me.

Edit: only some use bluetooth apparently. Others rely on the self timer or send the signal through the headphone jack.

I have one that plugs into my phone's headphone jack. No batteries. How does that work?

It's possible to send a signal through the headphone jack. Some headphones have volume and play controls, so I imagine it utilizes the same function to trigger the shutter.

Yeah, I know about the volume controls - but how does it do it without batteries?

...Wait, regular headphones do that. (face palm)

Yep lol. Power is coming into it, it can relay it back.

It's more complicated than that, but it's where the power is coming from.

most camera apps on smart phones take a photo when you push the volume rocker, or can be configured to do so. So when you push the volume on a headphone controller, it takes the picture.

I don't have an over the top problem with selfie sticks but living in an area with lots of tourists in a small space has shown me how fucking stupid some of the things people use them for. I have seen a guy using it to take a picture of the ocean..... Not a selfie, just holding it out as far as he could so that instead of it being a picture of the ocean from the beach, it was a picture of the ocean 2 feet away from the beach. I have also seen people recording themselves while walking with the stick and that's when it gets really fucking annoying because in a crowded area they are just taking up a shit ton of extra space.

I understand why it's so easy to hate selfie sticks and people who use them, but something I read here made me change my mind a while ago.

A Redditor was talking about finding a box of photographs taken by their deceased grandparents. They were very excited until they found they were all landscapes, buildings and other people. They wanted to see their grandparents.

It made me look at my own pictures which were much the same and now I try and include myself when visiting places and taking pictures.

Soon after doing that my family members commented how happy the were to see ME in pictures of places I was, instead of just the scenery.

Now, I use a tripod and remote shutter and a real camera which makes me feel better about it, but there shouldn't be any reason to feel bad about using a selfie stick.

I guess the difference is intent? "I want to take pictures of me duck-facing into the camera all day because I'm so awesome" vs "My grandma will scold me if I don't include a picture of myself on my trip among all the shots of trees and sunsets."

Exactly! If I want to look at pictures of the great wall of China, I can see them all over the internet, but none of them bring back the same feelings as the ones I have of me and my brother standing on it.

I hope you get more upvotes. I think selfie sticks get a lot of hate because of the stereotypical stuff you see in this post. Yes, you could say they are for narcissists, but for people who travel alone, or as a couple and you both want to be in the picture, selfie sticks are great.

If I had no shame, I could ask any of the selfie stick haters here to follow me around and take photos of me in front of 50 different things. The alternative is I get a selfie stick and just do it myself. It seems selfie stick haters would prefer to sacrifice 2 hours of their time to strangers so they won't use selfie sticks.

I was traveling solo to Europe years ago, and all I had was picture of things I saw rarely with myself in the pictures. I'm heading to Europe again this summer with my wife. We will use the selfie stick. I'm ready for the snickers and weird look people will give me.

I don't hate selfie-sticks, I hate people that walk through crowded places (like Yokohama Chinatown) with their eyes locked on the selfie-stick on not where they are going.

As someone who has lived right next to one of the most beautiful national parks in Canada, what people used to do before selfie sticks was hand their camera to a friendly Canadian and make button-pushing motions with their fingers.

I can see why someone might be scared to do that with a phone, but I've never even heard of anyone walking off with (very expensive) cameras.

It was mainly Japanese tourists back then, mainly Chinese now. I was last there about 4 years ago, and still ended up taking people's pictures.

The weirdest part is knowing that some of them just up and took pictures of me as well. There's probably an album's worth of pictures of a gawky Canadian college kid with a very friendly Richardson ground squirrel on their knee, somewhere in Japan.

The difference is definitely intent. I can certainly see several justifiable uses of the selfie stick (vacations, some cool extreme sports, etc.) and that's lovely. Totally valid.

What made me hate them, however, was a friend of mine who had purchased one. I was having a going-away party, moving from one state to another, and it was my last night in town. I invited everyone out to this billiards bar and we had a great time.

But this one particular friend? He decided to bring along his selfie stick. For no less than an hour he sat on a couch with two of his friends and took innumerable videos and pics of himself and just....what the fuck? It was self-obsessed to the point of being horribly unhealthy. Self-obsessed to the point of not enjoying the company he went there to enjoy.

If that wasn't bad enough, you end up with a deluge of these completely uninteresting videos on his Instagram / Facebook feed. Since he's my friend it's a tough call. I don't want to unfollow him, but it really makes my skin crawl seeing narcissism at that level.

So, yes. Intent.

I don't think selfies are the issue, it's more the rate and mentality that goes with it.

When I'm somewhere special, I like to take time to appreciate the place, I will probably take a photo of the landscape and one of me and my friends, but no more than that. In the meantime, I see some groups being totally self-absorbed taking selfies after selfies and spending half of their time there on their phones posting the perfect photos on their social feeds.

It's like, the selfie is now the ultimate milestone of a vacation for some people, not the fact that you actually experienced it but the fact that you were able to get pictures of your best profile in twenty different landscapes.

It's easy to see the consequences of that kind of behavior, especially on social networks: a profile with tons of selfies usually looks a lot like some carefully crafted advertissement. The photos are not genuine. To take your example, if I look at pictures of my grandparents, I'd like them to be as close to the reality as possible. When I went hiking last weekend, we took some group photos, my hair was a tangled mess (I'm letting it grow) and I had to attach it with an elastic, it was really, really ridiculous, but I didn't remove it or change it for the photos.

Every time I'll look at or show them in the future, it will be how it really was, not how I wanted it to look like.

While on vacation for EDC Puerto Rico, the wife and I actually found a selfie stick in our rental car. We thought they were just for douche bags but then we started using it for the last couple of days we we're there and it was amazing! I tend to want to feature us in the majority of photos because who wants to look back at vacation photos in 5 years and see no pictures of yourself. Using the stick we got wonderful shots of us and TONS of background. The photos came out amazing and we bring it with on most trips now.

Strangely, when using the stick we found that MORE people would ask us if they could take a picture for us. Uhhh no thanks?... that's what the stick is for...

even then I mean obviously this is just my opinion, but everyone is so obsessed with taking pictures wherever they go

like when me and my family went to yellowstone for the first time when I was like 6 or whatever, I understand taking a lot of pictures, but when we go when im 23, sometimes I just like to walk around and experience what it really is

I feel like my parents are so obsessed with documenting everything that they forget how to just enjoy themselves from time to time

which is funny because of how much the "newer generation" of americans are obsessed with the internet and technology and whatnot

like if I was that guy, I would never imagine wanting to take video of that, I would just want to do what I was doing

What I find funny about your statement is that there are a lot of people who really enjoy documenting things. That's the fun. Sharing your experiences with your friends and family was what they enjoyed.

Maybe your parents didn't, but a lot of people do.

I was recently invited to some older (60+) friends house and they showed me pictures from their trip they took a few months earlier. They had a blast and I had a blast. They got to relive their experience and I got to see a place that I won't be able to visit for a long time.

Now that's not to say I don't get your point. Just that it's not really black and white. Lots of people vacation in lots of different ways. One of the things I've learned as an 'over 30' is that having strong opinions about what other people do doesn't accomplish anything and only breeds contempt.

I remember going to Carlsbad Caverns with my family when I was about 8. We took one roll of film, 24 pictures, and that was that. But I remember all sorts of amazing stuff from that trip. The pictures stay in some dusty photo album at my parent's house, but the experience still inspires me from time to time.

I feel really sorry for everyone that grows up with the Public Paparazzi. I still prefer to observe, remember, and experience rather than pose, click, and post.

Pictures are for remember specific details - like numbers or book titles - not for remembering experiences. I just want to shake people at concerts and say, "Put the camera down! Experience and live. It'll be on youtube in 5 minutes, you can look at it there when you want to see it again!"

People would always offer to take the picture for us but I'd never want them to touch my camera. I'd always have to say thanks but it's a tradition to take this type of picture.

Since 'selfies' have become mainstream we've never been asked again.

Why? Almost all phones come with front facing cameras, the selfie stick only extends your reach. This way you can get group shots, or a whole body shot of yourself. If I'm traveling and want a pciture of myself in front of some artifact or interesting place, my options are a picture of my face with the other object over my shoulder, or a selfie stick. It's just a fucking tripod you hold

I own a monopod from way back in the old times. Selfie sticks are a monopod + a Bluetooth thingamajig that lets you click from the base of the monopod.

The monopod that I have (which I bought in the epoch of heavy over-the-shoulder home videocams in lieu of a less portable tripod -- so to put it on the ground and just balance it) is workable for gopro action videos, but not for iPhone selfies: the built-in timer is not long enough that you can really profit from positioning the selfie stick, framing from different vertical angles, etc.

But back to my point, selfie sticks!=monopods. Godamn pedants.

Life is so much more relaxing when you just ignore instead. Not always easy and I still hate things (like some SJWs, rape, abuse etcetera) but I've let the minor things go.

Good luck with reddit. There's always some new blind hate train everyone's hopping on, it's very tiring, I'll never understand

And even then hate is taking it a bit far. I think it's annoying that some people want to document everything by putting their face in it, but luckily I'm not friends with anyone like that. It's not affecting my life so I don't really give a shit. When I'm on my deathbed I won't be thinking about these people any more than I'll regret not having any pictures of myself.

Take a selfie at arms length? Totally fine. Take a selfie using an extending rod? You're the devil.

To be fair, a lot of people are anti-selfie at arms length as well.

They are called anti-selfites.

Next thing you know you're saying they should have their own schools

First they'll get their own schools, then they'll want to be able to vote. Is that what we want, America?

personally, i really don't mind, actually its kinda great, if its a selfie of a person or a group and everyone is smiling or having a cool time. thats a cool photo. but when you go to a girls instagram feed and its her, making the same face and the same pose, in a thousand different places, thats when i become "anti-selfie". bonus if every selfie comes with a retarded, irrelevant quote.

Those are ugly people.

Take a selfie at arms length? Totally fine.

That's debatable.

Yeah, I've totally killed at least 3 peoples' entire families who did that. But for others I've let it slip.

You must not travel in heavy tourist areas then. I almost got stabbed by several of these when in large groups of people where there is not much room to get around them. People also like to stick them out in the air where others are trying to take pictures of sights....they are pure evil...

Yeah, I live in a touristy area and have been whacked a few times in the head by people who were paying more attention to the phone than their surroundings.

Exactly! Why hate on selfie sticks when vuvuzelas still exist?

I don't know about the rest of reddit, but I'm capable of hating more than one thing at once.

Two things, right? I can only hold one pitchfork per hand!

Not if you get the new Pitchfork Stick™!

Attach little pitchforks on the forks of you pitchforks and continue that until you have pitchforks for all the things you hate.

We need selfie vuvuzelas.

I would never buy a selfie stick.... but if it was also a vuvuzela??? Yes please!

I'm taking a holiday alone soon and I'm buying myself a selfie stick to take with me so I can get nice shots of me to send to my family at home. Boo me for wanting to get good pictures to remember my trip and share with people?

The bigger the distance and the more of the amazing scenery and sights I can get. Screw me I suppose...? :/

If you want a selfie stick then get one. Who cares what other people think. You do you boo boo (:

[–]LOLmodel 2 ポイント3 ポイント  (0子コメント)

They are great for taking photos that you couldn't otherwise take. Makes taking photos looking down a cliffside or rooftop much easier.

That was my attitude when we recently went to Kauai, and when we were there they were more prominent than I would have guessed and people didn't care, it seems to be a localized distaste on the Internet, at least for vocalization.

The other nice thing is we were able to get some interesting shots you could only get with selfie sticks

Selfie sticks are for people who don't want to ask strangers to hold their expensive phone and take a picture for them.

Asking someone to take you and a friends picture is like the human selfie stick.

Except in this video, there's three different people who are too self-absorbed to notice that they can take each others' photos, and much more easily at that. No stranger needed.

And a speakerphone makes it easier for people to doubletask while talking in front of a bunch of other people. It only gets annoying when you do it in a crowd.

What a stupid response. If you are really annoyed with someone taking a picture of themselves with a fucking STICK, maybe you're the one with the problem.

How could someone get annoyed at a selfie stick? Yeah, it's sort of a stupid invention that I wish I'd have come up with... but it seems like people like 'em, so what's the harm?

Well a large, long, solid stick tends to get in the way a bit more than most other things.

Like anything else, selfie sticks get used by douchebags as well as perfectly normal people. And douchebags tend to use them in large moving crowds or in the middle of sidewalks. I think my personal "douche of the year" award is the guy who got pissy with me when I asked him to stop blocking the staircase to my old apartment with one of these sticks after he took several pictures and didn't seem to want to stop.

So it's not too hard to imagine why people have a problem with them.
Some people have trouble blaming others for being douches, so instead of seeing the selfie stick as a useful tool they see it as "just another tool for douchebags to use".

I actually kind of like them though.

That's what I'm sayin. They seem like a very useful tool to take pictures of yourself with a group without asking some stranger to use your phone/camera.

Cue the advent of the incognito selfie stick.. "What's the problem, Mr security guard.. This is just my cane. Sure it happens to also take selfies from slightly longer than arms reach. But mostly its a cane."

A stealthy version of the Selfie Stick, a Stealthie Stick, if you will.

Stealthfie! i can take stealthy selfies with my stealfie stick?

Those aren't sticks, more like poles. I was kind of hoping they would go through a tunnel.

This may be super unbelievable but recently I bought a selfie stick at Best Buy for a different reason other than taking "selfies". When I asked the guy where they were he totally gave me shit and didnt believe me that I wasnt a 12 year old buying it to take pictures of my self. Totally awkward.

Well, that driver certainly has a punchable face.
