She is also accused of oppressing the voices of disabled people during a recent occupation - something she, "as a disabled woman", denies.

I didn't know bat shit mental counted as a disability these days. I wonder what disability she has.

They basically say that doctors and other medical professionals are ableist, privileged and part of the system. Essentially that they're out to get them by not diagnosing them with whatever made up thing they think they have.

I even seen some people self-diagnose as having cancer and then claim they overcame it with some bullshit.

It's a race to the bottom with them on who has the most disabilities and special-snowflake points. I used to have a few links for it but can't seem to find them, this is the best I can do:

[–]Liof 20 ポイント21 ポイント  (8子コメント)

What the fuck are these people...

[–]RecQueryEat your cereal 24

It can get a lot worse, the self-diagnosis stuff is actually pretty tame compared to some of what you see and read.

One of the theories is that these people have no actual hardship, conflict, worries or oppression in their lives so they feel the need to manufacture it in order to feel special or to fit in with other people doing the same thing. Some of them are just looking for payout though.

They pretend to have disabilities and mental disorders, say that arguing online gave them PTSD. Try to be things like transfat or transethnic or say they have fictional characters living in their heads. Try to 'champion' the plight of others and come up with terms like stare-rape, manspreading or mansplaining, etc.

Of course they could also be slightly unbalanced and have a hard time distinguishing reality from fantasy.

Wow... The Internet is such a weird place sometimes; what a bizarre micro-culture. Thank you so much for taking the time to shed light on this bizarre fad. Interesting and terrifying.

or say they have fictional characters living in their heads.

You mean like Robin Hood's mother, Robin himself, and a child-aged version of Robin, rescued via time travel from, the Sheriff of Nottingham?

No, really, I've been down this road. If you start hearing shit like this, stop what you're doing, get away from the crazy tumblrina, and move to another town.

[–]RecQueryEat your cereal 3

I've seen some weird ones:

  • Someone with multiple version of Hitler, like gay Hitler, jewish Hitler, female Hitler, etc.
  • People with the entire cast of ASOIAF/GOT.

Sometimes these characters and historical figures would take control and 'make them' do stuff they didn't want to do or they would do things like rape or kill each other inside the persons head.

Then there are the people who are convinced that any second they will Hulk-out and actually transform into a demon, werewolf, anime characters, etc.

[–]northern_crusaderYorkshire 1 ポイント2 ポイント  (0子コメント)

My mother is one. Whatever she has can't just be a simple ache or pain but turns out to be whatever she decides sounds the best when googling. She then goes and pesters her poor GP. Every time I say that I have an ache or pain she goes on to tell me it could be some condition or other that I've never heard of. I just ignore her.

By opposing self diagnosis you are telling people that they cannot understand themselves without outside help. You’re opposing self-determination.

As much as I think this woman is a complete bimbo, you can't always judge somebody's health based on appearances. I sincerely hope she's not exaggerating or lying about it because there are many of us living with invisible illnesses who suffer because of people's ignorance and misconceptions.

she also says that she isn't white, so I am pretty sceptical that she actually is disabled - especially as she used that as an excuse to claim that she couldn't have discriminated against disabled people because "she is disabled".

Technically the term white is a simplification of the actual category of Caucasian, which definitely includes Turkish.

My point is that it's not unreasonable for her to identify as non-white. We can't really invoke the technical definition of Caucasian as the term comes from pre-WW2 theories of racial science, which have been discredited. The modern use of the word is controversial.

no, Turkey has always been east of the Caucasus mountains; they have always been Caucasian.

It drives me crazy when people pretend to have invisible illnesses because it makes people think that people like me are faking it too.

I have CFS/ME too. That's why I try really hard not to judge.

I'm not sure what to make of all this criticism of self-diagnosis in the thread either, because it took me a year of being disbelieved by doctors, and then another year after that to get referred to the correct service and receive a professional diagnosis.

People know their own bodies better than anyone else. I would like to think that the majority of people wouldn't be so deceptive, for the sake of all those people who genuinely suffer.

From that point of view, this weirdo and Cameron with his "Obeying the law is not enough" are on different wings of the same side.

If a few nutters on the internet are enough to stop you being socially progressive then you probably weren't as progressive as you thought IMO. Redditors spend too much time on the internet. Once you get off the internet, you realise these people are for the most part, a fringe minority of teenage girls who don't actually have any influence in the real world.

Ask anybody in the real world if they can even tell you what a "SJW" is. They couldn't. These people are not taken seriously anywhere outside of their own circles, but people spend so much time on the internet they think they're actually some sort of big deal. It's hilarious

Whatever the case she's pretty much destroyed all future career prospects for herself.

Actually, she did that by pursuing a Gender Studies degree.

She'll get a job writing for the Guardian

"Writing"

Na she'll be a freelancer, not wanting to be tied down by the oppressive nature of a regular job which constrains her personality. All she'll be getting is thrown £100 every couple of months writing a Comment is Free article everyone will bitch about.

Isn't she white though? I mean, I don't see race so I can't be sure but I think she's white.

ah, but she "self identifies" as brown. (I know, it is ridiculous)

She's of Turkish extraction iirc. In terms of appearance I suppose it could go either way coming from anywhere on the Mediterranean but it looks like she sticks to the single drop rule.

And then she held a speech where she asserted that "people of colour" can't be racist (that's what I linked to). At that point, she still had a lot of supporters. See the crowd.

In fairness this usually comes from using a definition of racist that ties it into a system of power. In effect the argument is that a person of colour can be bigoted on the grounds of race but that doesn't make them racist (although presumably Arabs in Saudi Arabia could be racist against non Arabs). Obviously this hits the problem that most people define racism as discrimination on the grounds of race regardless of who is doing it and who is on the receiving end.

It is also tactically foolish since its even harder to change something when you've defined it as something that by definition can't effect the most powerful group going.

The problem with the "racism is prejudice plus power" definition is that it leads to absurd conclusions. Does it mean, for instance, that if I called a black policeman in South Africa or Zimbabwe a racial epithet it wouldn't be racist? After all, 1. I'm a minority in that country. 2. He has more power than me. Or have we take into account all historical and global imbalances in power as well? Am I somehow to blame for the crimes of my forefathers (despite the fact that my forefathers were poor Scottish and Irish farmers who as far as I know didn't oppress anyone)? You can see what absurd consequences result from this idea taken to its logical conclusion.

It's an idea from American college campuses which has leaked over here. The Tumblr people are in fact very sheltered middle class youngsters who have latched onto a half-understood feminism and identity politics as a means of self-aggrandisement.

In fairness this usually comes from using a definition of racist that ties it into a system of power.

Which is a definition they made to suit their narrative.

Racism according to Google is;

the belief that all members of each race possess characteristics, abilities, or qualities specific to that race, especially so as to distinguish it as inferior or superior to another race or races.

Which is the definition that pretty much everyone else uses.

Why do people use this version of racism though, as oppossed to the normal one that everyone else accepts?

changing the definition to suit their own argument I reckon

This is completely ridiculous.

But she added the uses of hashtags such as "kill all white men" on her personal account were "in-jokes and ways that many people in the queer feminist community express ourselves".

I mean fine, maybe there's some context there that I'm missing - I've made jokes to people I know well that would probably sound pretty offensive out of context. But I didn't share them with people that wouldn't get the context, like say the whole internet.

I wouldn't say I feel offended or oppressed by her making jokes about executing my entire gender/race, but I do think it's ludicrous for her to remain in charge of anything, let alone anything with "diversity" in the title.

Good riddance.

Honestly, I don't even care if it was ironic or sarcastic or whatever she uses as a defense, if your job is to handle sensitive equality issues and you're publicly saying stuff like this something is very wrong with you.

I love the way it's 'could lose job'.

If a white guy had tweeted 'kill all non-white women' there would be no 'could' about it - they would already be arrested.

I think it's worth noting that the Guardian have not reported on this at all.

Every other news outlets have at the very least reported on her "banning white people" from an event.

The Guardian are choosing not to report on it.

[–]RiktenkayNarfuk, living in Notts 1

The Guardian is rife with this sort of bullshit. It's a sad state of affairs as it was one of the only papers I could take remotely seriously. Not really the case any more.

Since when have controversial figures in student politics made national news?

Other newspapers are reporting it because it appeals to their editorial line of lefty-students and PC garbage, not because it's intrinsically newsworthy.

She is also accused of oppressing the voices of disabled people during a recent occupation - something she, "as a disabled woman", denies.

I'd really like to know more about this story. Who did she allegedly oppress, and how?
Granted, I'm not really giving her the benefit of the doubt; it's just that given what's she's already done and how she's defended it, I'm curious as to how far she might've gone. Full-on "no cripples please" would not surprise me at this point.
