Where is the teacher? What are they saying? So many questions...

Where is the teacher?

Crying in the bathroom while wondering why the hell they thought that Teach for America was a good idea.

Substitute teacher?

Where is the teacher?

Teachers leave classrooms all the time. And kids often do silly things when the teachers leave. It's been this way for literally centuries.

I went to school during one of these centuries, never had THAT break out in a class room when a teacher stepped out.

Well, you probably went to a white school.

Man, you missed out. At my school, guys would jump on the desk, whip out their ball bag, and chase girls with their "penis brain".

You are not supposed to leave a classroom unsupervised. You will get written up and possibly lose your job. Not saying I don't stick by this rule 100%, but in the very seldom and rare case I do this, it's either urgent or its with students I can trust.

People have been dancing on desks to an iPhone with music playing, chanting to some random song for Centuries ehh?

ahahha im from a small town so we didnt have a whole lot of mischief but those poor teachers having to put up with kids all year must be torture

thats why most of em don't even care these days as long as the lonely white kid doesn't come in with a gun lol. sadly they can't discipline kids unless they break the "heaviest" of rules (sometimes they don't even do that, rather drink some coffee)

If teachers can't do anything to punish their students then why did a kid get suspended for biting his pop tart into the shape of a gun?

Because that is politically correct, and only the parent of the child will protest. Physically removing students from a classroom will make people shit their pants and call abuse, and the teacher will lose his/her job and get sued.

Actually, the school had had numerous issues with that one student, and the pop tart incident was just on the list of grievances the school brought to the parents. The father saw that and ran with it to the news.

I never said a teacher should touch a kid but they do have resource officers at the school who can is trained to physically remove kids. My town has at least one cop per middle school and high school and most all public schools with discipline problems have resource officers daily.

Why shouldn't a teacher touch a kid? I think the main problem with school now is teachers can't give some kids a smack or throw them out.

I agree completely, once you're in high school teachers can easily be smaller and weaker than students. They should have full authority to defend themselves.

Throw them out? Sure. Smack them? No.

I think it's fine. When I was younger I would do stupid things but one of the major factors I never did anything truly messed up no matter the peer pressure was knowing my dad would give me a beating for it. Hitting isn't evil when it's done from a place of love and learning. After every spanking I had afterword I would be sat down and explained why it happened and how my actions caused it. Just hitting a kid won't help and make them more violent BUT a well placed smack at the correct moment for correct a negative behavior can save years of pain and lives.

I'm not sure how it would work for kids that don't give a fuck, but in my school they would just yell at you and generally shame you. Schools in America, however, seem to have kids that just talk back, yell at and even hit their teachers. How the hell you get to being such an asshole I don't know, and how to fix it I don't know either. American highschoolers are messed up.

One problem I see with your suggestion is that you can't be spending time hitting the kid and then explaining everything to him. You got a class to teach. Also, what happens when the kid fights back? Highschoolers can already be pretty beefy at that age while teachers are usually older and definitely not fit for fights.

Because teachers aren't trained on how hard they can hit students or when they should hit students. Knowing how to punish/subdue people with violence is not a natural skill and has to be taught/learned.

Actually, the school had had numerous issues with that one student, and the pop tart incident was just on the list of grievances the school brought to the parents. The father saw that and ran with it to the news.

That was still just the teacher telling the prinicple who took the action. My cousin is a teacher and I asked this question to see what it's like nowadays. She basically said they can send them to the office to start the punishment but they can't do much passed making a student leave the classroom.

My school was like this is you took the non honors classes. The teachers didn't give a fuck about anything. Honors classes on the other hand where much different. I took every honor class there was just to escape the idiots (students and teachers).

I'm not talking about beating up on kids. I'm not stupid. But teachers have authority. We can use discipline and if that doesn't work, you get school security and student service specialists involved.

So no, I wouldn't be unemployed. And I would know, because I'm a teacher.

Yeah all of my classes here in the UK had desks like that or often all joined together round the room so we all sat in lines or a big square.

It was only when we had exams etc that single desks were used, but exams were rarely sat in classrooms they would be in a big sports hall.

If only our schools in low-income neighborhoods had the funding for these tables. There would be adequate dancing room for everyone! Hell you could break dance on one of those puppies.

How do you stress out the students with desks like that? This is a school, you don't need a place to put your text book and your notebook. /s

To deter cheating if I had to guess. All of our science classes had the double desks though.

If I had a guess, it's because of class sizes. Aaverage class size is 24.2 nationwide (source). At my high school, it was generally much, much higher. Usually 35-40 students per class. In college, it ranged from about 40 for a normal class to ~200 for a lecture. That is obviously lower in advanced/specialized classes and will differ greatly from school-to-school.

But the problem is... how do you fit 35-40 students in a room with desks like /u/envirosani posted? There simply isn't room.

Your first reaction is likely smaller classes. I agree. That needs to happen. But then you look at overall population. My high school was 2,200 students spread over 4 grades. My graduating class was considered small and was 600 students. My high school was only the third most populated in my district and not even top 15 in the state (Michigan). Availability of quality teachers aside, how do you fit that many students into a school if you decrease class size?

It's definitely a problem, but there isn't much you can really do about it when you have that many students, at least not that I can think of.

lack of social interaction leave kids less comfortable and able to handle being an adult in the real world and forming connections to peers. well, thats my .02c anyways

It depends. Many home schooled kids will have church 'n shit to socialize. When I started to go to college and some home schooled high schoolers were taking classes so it's not all bad.

It'd be pretty crazy if the kid got home schooled and had no other interaction outside the home. But if the parent is that crazy then... yeah... shit would be fucked.

Plus, a lot of parents make for shitty teachers.

Holy fucking shit, this thread is everything about reddit that is fucking disgusting.

Was she loud? Yes. Should she have NOT stepped on his desk? Yes. Is this really fucking "justice" that he did something that could have seriously injured her? Fuck no, unless you're a racist piece of fucking shit like a lot of you scumbags in here.

People bitch about "le reddit armie" giving reddit a bad name, but they miss the point of those trolls taking the piss out of people who view reddit so seriously that "making us look bad" is some kind of serious offense, because too often the people who take this website too seriously fucking ignore the racist pieces of shit like a lot of you in the process

I feel for the guy frustrated about being inhibited in his education, but I think physical violence is not proportionate response to the loud inconvenience.

                  I hear either:
                  "can't learn from shit"
                  Or
                  "can't learn functions"

what if she broke her neck as a result of his actions?

I don't care how annoying someone is being that does not justify the possibility of making them a quadriplegic for life.

Unfortunately, it's highly likely that although all of the obnoxious ones will get punished, he'll probably cop the most shit.

I had to deal with way worse annoyances in highschool and I never had to strike or hurt the girl over it. You get shit stepped on, it doesn't mean you have to or even should hurt someone. You don't hit someone that isn't attacking you. Common sense. Why would you condone hurting the girl over her poor decision to dance on his desk? Come on now. You all should be ashamed for condoning that.
