This board is for the discussion of classic, or "retro" games. Retro gaming means consoles, computer games, arcade games (including pinball) and any other forms of video games on platforms launched in 1999 and earlier. With the release of the 8th generation of consoles, the Sega Dreamcast will now be considered "retro", though the remainder of the sixth generation (Xbox, PS2, GameCube) will not.Helpful links:Game Tech WikiEmulation General Wiki
So, my SD2SNES just arrived and I'm very excited to start using it. I was wondering though, is there a better shell I could buy so it doesn't look so crappy? It's just a North American cart with holes grinded into the top and the sticker was printed on regular paper. It's not a huge deal but it would be interesting to have a fancy shell to swap the board into. I know that on Krikzz website he has the clear red one you can buy so I was hoping somebody was selling the shells for cheap. I checked eBay but didn't find anything.SD2SNES general I guess, would you be so kind as to post photos of your own so I can compare?Pic isn't mine but quality is the same on the sticker.
>>2405694It really depends on your usage habits. SD2SNES is without a doubt a better product, but the extra features aren't necessarily worth the extra money unless you're a heavy user. For example, SD2SNES loads games much faster than Super Everdrive, so if you want to switch games often or maybe you're a speedrunner, then there's no comparison. But Super Everdrive doesn't take TOO long, maybe a minute a most, and once a game is loaded you can start it instantly until you load a different game.I don't really care about the extra games that SD2SNES can play, but maybe you do. Find out what they are before you decide.
>>2405917>>I don't really care about the extra games that SD2SNES can play, but maybe you do. Find out what they are before you decide. This is the most important point to consider. Look at all the chip games. Figure out which ones you'd actually want to play. Then go online, and check eBay for the prices of the ones you want. If it costs you more to buy all the chip games than it does to buy an SD2SNES, which still can't play some chip games anyway, get the SD2SNES.If you want to save even more money, go to Aliexpress and buy the clone carts. I think a Super Everdrive is 65 bucks, the only negative is you have to reset before you turn off the power to save because it's a clone of a slightly earlier version. And Krikzz fanboys will cry endlessly about how you're ruining lives and you don't have a "lifetime warranty".
>>2406206>>2406208Are you suggesting for him to look up those games, buy them, take them apart and reuse the cases for his flash cart JUST because they are unique in color?Instead of just buying the cheapest half a dollar football game, taking it apart and painting it.

>>2406171Depends on the PVM. Most likely, it won't work. Those cables are made for old computer monitors before the VGA standard was introduced.
>>2406190A lot of, even newer, higher end CRT monitors have BNC plugs for RGB.They're extremely useful for hardware bypassing DDC and other crap like that, or connecting stuff that doesn't have a VGA plug on the other end.>>2406171It'll work as long as either your GPU can output 15kHz or your PVM can accept 31kHz RGB signals.
>>2406171You'll need a way to combine the horizontal and vertical sync, as well as lowering it down to something the PVM can accept(15khz).The former can be done a number of ways. A BNC t-connector to just force the two together is the dirty way. There's a simple circuit you can build, or if you're looking for something to buy, an Extron RGB Interface does the job nicely. That requires a different assortment of cables though.
>>2406201>>2406202I'm using a PVM-20M2MDU (which I believe from looking around is 15/31khz capable) and the GPU is one of Ultimarc's ArcadeVGA cards. It has dual-link DVI-I, HDMI and VGA. If it's doable, what's the easiest, most convenient way I can connect the PC to the PVM?
>>2406209The 20M2MDU is 15khz only. You'll need to run a 15khz signal which probably won't be much of an issue with that card.I'm pretty sure you need a circuit to combine the sync lines, I think that model only accepts c-sync. You're looking at a bit of hassle.Honestly, if you wanted an easy way to connect a PC and PVM, I would have just gotten an old ATI card with S-video out. It auto-converts any signal to 480i with no issue, all you need is an S-video cable. You get very slight flicker that's totally unnoticeable with any movement. Hell, it even works with light guns.
Is the Neo Geo X worth picking up as a little portable /vr/ machine?Note: I hate the PSP
No. It's awful.

Can we discuss how awesome yet unknown as fuck this game is?
>>2405019And a lot of biblical crap too, IIRC.Which reminds me, if anyone is having themselves a playthrough, mind grabbing me a pic of some random NPC up on the Tower of Babel that goes on about how names are meaningless? That really stuck with me as a kid and I'd just like to know what the dude actually says and can't into doing a playthrough ATM.
>>2405380If I remember rightly he asks your name, then tells you names are just labels, and you can do whatever you like in life ans shouldn't be held back by your circumstances, or something similar. Dude is in Heaven in the flower field.

Bloodborne? >>2403234I have a love/hate sort of feelings about NC2. I keep coming back to it because it's fucking spooky. I'd say even more so than the first game. But yeah, everything else is trash. The controls are utter shit, the enemies are either too predictable or impossible to counter, and it's glitchy as all hell. I also hate how the game forces you to fight everything.I wonder if the third game would have been better if it wasn't canceled.
>>2403130Well shit, you convinced me, anything I have to know before I play it? you know, little tips
>>2403745Yeah I got some tips for ya.Try not to die.try to stay calm, if you're too spooked you might fuck up and it might result in your death. This is not a joke it happened to me a couple times. Also be wary of ambushes, at very specific places the monsters like to jump your ass however if you can predict these places you can actually act on them and smack the monster in the face as he jumps at you which I must admit is quite satisfying.

The Guncon 1 is easily the best home gun I've ever held, the balancing and weight is almost perfect.Arcade wise, the classic Namco arcade gun with recoil can't be beat. I'm in the process of hooking one up to my system with a mod, I picked up a 4gamers light gun that shocked me because it actually has a simple recoil circuit that I can easily use to power a relay. My only issue right now is that the cheap 24V power introduces tons of noise and fucks up the tracking. Ideally, I wanted to mod the gun using just the connector that comes out the bottom, but I'm going to have to run another wire down the outside to separate the voltage and signal lines, the actual arcade board must use a very stable power source or something.Tracking is great aside from the edges, which a lot of light guns seem to have an issue with. Works great on my old PC hooked up via S-video to my PVM, haven't tested the PS1 functionality yet, I'm going to get recoil working first.
>>2405874Is this worth it considering the games available?

>>2406015thanks manwich fire emblem game is considered the best?
>>2404052No it's not. There is a sort of "canon" of film which is something that does not exist in video games.
>>2406108What the fuck are you talking about? Films are not all related in story.
>>2401280My favorite game on the NES is Crystalis. Not a lot of people know about it, but it's a really good rpg, pretty much on par in quality with some of the good SNES rpg's.Also I'd suggest Dragon Warrior 4 as far as RPG's go, and some other general NES games I'd suggest are Contra, 3D Worldrunner, Ghosts n Goblins, and Castlevania 1 & 3. A few of my favorites.

Never played any of the final fantasy games before. Which ones are the best/should play? Do I have to play them in order to get the storyline or is each game different?
>Final Fantasy III really wanted to like the game and will praise it for it's ideas, story and characters that all are good for a game from late 80s.However there is lot wrong with the game like it's "level up" system. In theory it sound great:In theory attacking your enemies makes you better at using whatever weapon you used and occasionally gain str.In theory taking physical damage makes you tougher by raising your HP and def.In theory using magic makes the spells you used stronger and gives you more MP and mag. bonuses. However in practice you are doing things like these:-Choosing attack, immediately canceling it and doing this over and over again about 100 times per battle. This is bug/exploit allowing you to gain proficiency levels for the weapon type you are using.-Hitting your own guys in hopes of getting more HP for them.-Casting your spells over and over again to make them worth shit. The main problem here is that you basically HAVE TO keep doing these exploit over and over again in every fucking battle to get strong enough just to survive the battles with the random enemies you come across. Oh, FFII is pretty non-linear meaning if you ever walk out of your way and go somewhere else instead of the place you are supposed to go changes are you encounter enemies that are way too strong for you and kill you instantly. And if you ever try to play FFII normally without using aforementioned exploits you are as good as dead and have grind forever to gain any stats at all.Comment too long. Click here to view the full text.
>>2405798But you DON'T have to exploit the system. Honestly, I think you're just making the assumption that because it's so easy to be cheap that you have to be. The game isn't really that unfair. The fact that players ruin the games for themselves doesn't mean the game is designed poorly.Of course this game IS designed poorly, but not for it's stat system, if you ask me. Just those stinking dungeons.
>>2406117>But you DON'T have to exploit the system. Honestly, I think you're just making the assumption that because it's so easy to be cheap that you have to be>The fact that players ruin the games for themselves doesn't mean the game is designed poorlyThis could be also be said about FFVIII.Anyway what he said is pretty much true for the Famicon and PSX versions of FFII. Playing those versions of game using said exploits is boring and tedious and trying to play the game without them is even more boring and tedious. Now the PSP remake of FFII is playable without resorting these exploits because it removed the stat losses and increased stat gains which really reduces the need to grind for stats. You are right about the dungeons through they are generally uninteresting and boring and I especially love those parts where you have to choose one door out of 5 and 4 of them leads to empty room with an unavoidable enemy encounter.
>>2406117the dungeons truly suck and I'm saying this as somebody who likes FF2. the airship is the worst because when you enter it you can go back outside. you have to go all the way through to the end and if you run out of items or magic points, you're fucked.
>>2406192*can't (!) go back outside.

Anyone else thinks this is an overrated piece of shit?
I think all consoles are overrated by some and underrated by others.
>>2404193I'm pretty sure you have Tony Hawk 2, Reisdent Evil 2, Spider-Man on N64 as well. Not like I think any of these games are actually that good or essentials, except for Resident Evil 2. And before you say RE2 on N64 is bad, no, it's actually better than the PS1 version. (Although Dreamcast or Gamecube versions are probably the best overall). As for Wipeout, you've got Wipeout 64, but it doesn't matter because N64 has F-Zero X anyway.>Only games I still remember are Mario 64, Fighter's Destiny and Golden Eye.Too bad, it seems you didn't look hard enough to find more games.
