This board is for the discussion of classic, or "retro" games. Retro gaming means consoles, computer games, arcade games (including pinball) and any other forms of video games on platforms launched in 1999 and earlier. With the release of the 8th generation of consoles, the Sega Dreamcast will now be considered "retro", though the remainder of the sixth generation (Xbox, PS2, GameCube) will not.

Carving up a juicy steak edition.

Tibia is a top down fantasy MMORPG launched in 1997. /tbg/ plays on two game worlds covering the two continents the game has servers in, choose the server you have the best connection to and post your name and world in here for an invite to either the guild Yotsubas (on the European world Secura) or Sengoku (on the North American world Fidera). Things get a bit slow during Summer but we'll be back inside huddled around the warmth of our GPUs when it gets cold out.

I remember ages ago that there was a plan to make a /vr/ recommendations images.

Any of those ever turn out, I'm particularly looking for NES/SNES.

No it's not. There is a sort of "canon" of film which is something that does not exist in video games.

My favorite game on the NES is Crystalis. Not a lot of people know about it, but it's a really good rpg, pretty much on par in quality with some of the good SNES rpg's.

Also I'd suggest Dragon Warrior 4 as far as RPG's go, and some other general NES games I'd suggest are Contra, 3D Worldrunner, Ghosts n Goblins, and Castlevania 1 & 3. A few of my favorites.

>Final Fantasy II
I really wanted to like the game and will praise it for it's ideas, story and characters that all are good for a game from late 80s.

However there is lot wrong with the game like it's "level up" system. In theory it sound great:
In theory attacking your enemies makes you better at using whatever weapon you used and occasionally gain str.
In theory taking physical damage makes you tougher by raising your HP and def.
In theory using magic makes the spells you used stronger and gives you more MP and mag. bonuses.

However in practice you are doing things like these:
-Choosing attack, immediately canceling it and doing this over and over again about 100 times per battle. This is bug/exploit allowing you to gain proficiency levels for the weapon type you are using.
-Hitting your own guys in hopes of getting more HP for them.
-Casting your spells over and over again to make them worth shit.

The main problem here is that you basically HAVE TO keep doing these exploit over and over again in every fucking battle to get strong enough just to survive the battles with the random enemies you come across. Oh, FFII is pretty non-linear meaning if you ever walk out of your way and go somewhere else instead of the place you are supposed to go changes are you encounter enemies that are way too strong for you and kill you instantly. And if you ever try to play FFII normally without using aforementioned exploits you are as good as dead and have grind forever to gain any stats at all.

>>
>>2405798
But you DON'T have to exploit the system. Honestly, I think you're just making the assumption that because it's so easy to be cheap that you have to be. The game isn't really that unfair. The fact that players ruin the games for themselves doesn't mean the game is designed poorly.

Of course this game IS designed poorly, but not for it's stat system, if you ask me. Just those stinking dungeons.
>>
>>2406117
>But you DON'T have to exploit the system. Honestly, I think you're just making the assumption that because it's so easy to be cheap that you have to be
>The fact that players ruin the games for themselves doesn't mean the game is designed poorly
This could be also be said about FFVIII.

Anyway what he said is pretty much true for the Famicon and PSX versions of FFII. Playing those versions of game using said exploits is boring and tedious and trying to play the game without them is even more boring and tedious. Now the PSP remake of FFII is playable without resorting these exploits because it removed the stat losses and increased stat gains which really reduces the need to grind for stats.

You are right about the dungeons through they are generally uninteresting and boring and I especially love those parts where you have to choose one door out of 5 and 4 of them leads to empty room with an unavoidable enemy encounter.
>>
>>2406117
the dungeons truly suck and I'm saying this as somebody who likes FF2.

the airship is the worst because when you enter it you can go back outside. you have to go all the way through to the end and if you run out of items or magic points, you're fucked.

This thread is for the spirited discussion of CRT displays - Televisions, monitors and projectors used for the playing of retro games!

These past few threads have been great, keep it up!

>Try to keep it /vr/-related: Nothing past 5th gen(+Dreamcast). Slight OT might be okay if related to CRTs (E.G. 16:9 compatible models, flatscreens, etc.) Systems with backwards compatibility are also pretty safe territory, assuming you're focusing on the older games. PC CRTs are also a-ok.
>Produce OC! Get out your real cameras and take beautiful pictures of your CRTs displaying recognizable characters with the kind of beautiful accuracy that brings tears to the eyes of young and old alike! If you take 100 photos, at least one of them will turn out alright!
>Try to be as detailed as possible when asking info on a specific model. As always, google is your friend, and we are your friends with benefits. Older archived threads aren't a bad place to look either.

>>
>>2404193

I'm pretty sure you have Tony Hawk 2, Reisdent Evil 2, Spider-Man on N64 as well. Not like I think any of these games are actually that good or essentials, except for Resident Evil 2. And before you say RE2 on N64 is bad, no, it's actually better than the PS1 version. (Although Dreamcast or Gamecube versions are probably the best overall).

As for Wipeout, you've got Wipeout 64, but it doesn't matter because N64 has F-Zero X anyway.

>Only games I still remember are Mario 64, Fighter's Destiny and Golden Eye.

Too bad, it seems you didn't look hard enough to find more games.

Still sucks that you couldn't get both PS1 and N64 though. But your personal reasons to hate the N64 are pretty dumb, let me tell ya.

Oh, and Darkstalkers (or any Capcom fighting port) on PS1 isn't that good. If you want to play 2D fighting games, you should have gone for the Sega Saturn.
Although the very first Darkstalkers was only on PS1, Saturn got the superior Vampire Hunter (exclusive to Saturn) and the best home port of Vampire Savior.

you're an overrated piece of shit

So, my SD2SNES just arrived and I'm very excited to start using it. I was wondering though, is there a better shell I could buy so it doesn't look so crappy? It's just a North American cart with holes grinded into the top and the sticker was printed on regular paper. It's not a huge deal but it would be interesting to have a fancy shell to swap the board into. I know that on Krikzz website he has the clear red one you can buy so I was hoping somebody was selling the shells for cheap. I checked eBay but didn't find anything.

SD2SNES general I guess, would you be so kind as to post photos of your own so I can compare?

Pic isn't mine but quality is the same on the sticker.

I have both. The amount I saved on SNES games that I would have had to otherwise buy was well worth the steep price. This is my opinion though.
>>
>>2405434

It's a wonder you can even identify which cart is in their product images for ants.
>>
>>2405617
That's the same thing I'm trying to figure out. I downloaded Terranigma, Secret of Mana 2, Earthbound, and now I'm looking at some hacks.

>>2405694
Make sure you double check the currency that the items are displayed in!!!! I didn't realize it was showed in U.S. dollars so the total was a bit of a surprise on my bill when it was 280$ with shipping. The Canadian dollar is really weak right now lol. The website I bought from was Canadian and talked about GST and PST and shipping within Canada but only at the very end did it have a small print showing the conversion, even the e-mail they sent me with my receipt showed it in U.S. dollars but it wasn't specified.

>>2405767
I'm not too happy with the place I bought it from. I've been using for a couple hours now and the board isn't exactly lined up because the cart shell they used wasn't for a Super FX game so they had to cut the slot bigger. I'm thinking I will just grab my copy of Stunt Racer FX and cut the top open so the board fits.
>>
>>2405694
It really depends on your usage habits. SD2SNES is without a doubt a better product, but the extra features aren't necessarily worth the extra money unless you're a heavy user. For example, SD2SNES loads games much faster than Super Everdrive, so if you want to switch games often or maybe you're a speedrunner, then there's no comparison. But Super Everdrive doesn't take TOO long, maybe a minute a most, and once a game is loaded you can start it instantly until you load a different game.

I don't really care about the extra games that SD2SNES can play, but maybe you do. Find out what they are before you decide.
>>
>>2405917
>>I don't really care about the extra games that SD2SNES can play, but maybe you do. Find out what they are before you decide.
This is the most important point to consider. Look at all the chip games. Figure out which ones you'd actually want to play.

Then go online, and check eBay for the prices of the ones you want. If it costs you more to buy all the chip games than it does to buy an SD2SNES, which still can't play some chip games anyway, get the SD2SNES.

If you want to save even more money, go to Aliexpress and buy the clone carts. I think a Super Everdrive is 65 bucks, the only negative is you have to reset before you turn off the power to save because it's a clone of a slightly earlier version. And Krikzz fanboys will cry endlessly about how you're ruining lives and you don't have a "lifetime warranty".

The Guncon 1 is easily the best home gun I've ever held, the balancing and weight is almost perfect.

Arcade wise, the classic Namco arcade gun with recoil can't be beat. I'm in the process of hooking one up to my system with a mod, I picked up a 4gamers light gun that shocked me because it actually has a simple recoil circuit that I can easily use to power a relay.

My only issue right now is that the cheap 24V power introduces tons of noise and fucks up the tracking. Ideally, I wanted to mod the gun using just the connector that comes out the bottom, but I'm going to have to run another wire down the outside to separate the voltage and signal lines, the actual arcade board must use a very stable power source or something.

Tracking is great aside from the edges, which a lot of light guns seem to have an issue with. Works great on my old PC hooked up via S-video to my PVM, haven't tested the PS1 functionality yet, I'm going to get recoil working first.

I just played and beat Jumping Flash for the first time and I was very pleasantly surprised. In all honesty, I expected an early era 3D game from 1995 - especially one with first-person platforming, to play like hot garbage, but it was actually very well done, and the first-person platforming was done better than even some modern games. Being able to see your shadow and feet at all times made landing jumps very smooth and easy. Overall, the game was short but sweet, and I greatly enjoyed it. I wonder how the sequel is...

What are retro games you expected to be unplayable today that turned out to be great?

I second this anon with Ghost in the Shell. It's made by the same team and it shows, great game.
Still need to emulate the X68K to play Geograph Seal.

And yes, go play Jumping Flash 2, it's amazing and a worthy sequel.

I think it's weird how Jumping Flash isn't more well known and remembered nowdays. People keep praising Crash and Spyro (which I always thought were meh), but Jumping Flash is somewhat obscure, even though it was one of the flagship games of the early PS days.
>>
>>2404786
>I think it's weird how Jumping Flash isn't more well known and remembered nowdays.
Granted, I have a rather limited gamer social circle, but I see the game get mentioned so much, both here and among some of my friends. Like OP noted, it's really noteworthy for doing 3D platforming right at a time when lots of people were still trying to find their legs in the genre. I don't care if it's not "mainstream" popular, but I definitely see it getting the respect it deserves among those who actually know their shit.
>>
>>2404781
Thanks for the heads-up. Never heard of it.

>>2404786
Before /vr/ I mostly heard about in context of being a fully 3D platformer that predates Mario 64. Shame that that's much of the respect it gets, when it's a unique (Geograph Seal notwithstanding) and brilliant game.

When JF gets mentioned it's mostly "oh yeah it was one of the earliest proper 3D platformers", but that's it, you don't see nostalgia PS1 kids talking about it as they do about Spyro or Crash.

JF 1 and 2 were my favorite PS platformers and I still think they're amazing today.

Because they're retarded. In my opinion, if you pay to have your consoles modded, you don't deserve them. The SNES-mini RGB mod is one of the easiest around, it's literally just soldering 3 fucking wires to a board that costs you 20 bucks.

Pretty much the only mod I could understand getting someone else to do is the NES RGB shit, if it's your first attempt at soldering. But that mod is pretty retarded anyway, and you'd probably just be better off hooking up a Wii if you really want RGB for a 30 year old console.
